Chapter 360: Chapter 360: My Heart Aches~
Huo Chenghuan didn’t believe it:
"You’re lying. You two are already divorced. Mommy would never invite you here..."
Huo Shaoyan interrupted her:
"If you don’t believe me, you can ask your mommy."
Following his words, Huo Chenghuan tilted her head and asked An Ge,
"Mommy, did you invite Huo Dazha over?"
Although she was divorced from Huo Shaoyan, An Ge didn’t want her child to harbor resentment toward her biological father.
So, she bent down and said to Huo Chenghuan:
"Huanhuan, you shouldn’t call him that. He’s your father."
She paused for a moment,
"I did invite him over because I have something important to discuss with him."
Huo Chenghuan became emotional,
"He doesn’t deserve to be our dad! He already had a baby with that horrible woman An Muxin! How can he still be our dad..."
An Ge felt a deep heartache.
She didn’t expect Huo Chenghuan to resent Huo Shaoyan so intensely.
For a moment, An Ge didn’t know how to handle the situation.
Huo Chenghuan, in her fury, shook off An Ge’s hand and ran upstairs.
Huo Shaoxin saw her eyes were red and wanted to chase after her to comfort her, but Huo Shaoyan called her back,
"Xinxin, come here."
Huo Shaoxin was a bit annoyed but still stepped in front of Huo Shaoyan.
She looked up at him and asked,
"Brother, did you really have a baby with another woman?"
Huo Shaoyan said, "Xinxin, matters between adults are not for you to worry about. In a while, eat dinner properly with Huai Shang, alright?"
Huo Shaoxin replied reluctantly, "...Alright, Brother."
After this, Huo Shaoyan walked toward An Ge, "This little one has a big misunderstanding about me. I’ll go upstairs and talk to her alone."
An Ge raised an eyebrow, "Does she look like she wants to talk to you right now?"
Huo Shaoyan replied, "I have my ways."
After speaking, he handed the yangmei he had brought to Nanny Lin,
"Take these and prepare some yangmei juice for her. It’s more appetizing."
After giving the instructions, Huo Shaoyan went upstairs.
An Ge originally wanted to follow, but Huo Shaoyan stopped her:
"You should at least give me the chance to have some time alone with my daughter, right?"
An Ge pursed her lips slightly, "Alright then."
While Huo Shaoyan went upstairs to find Huo Chenghuan, An Ge stayed downstairs and had dinner with Huo Huaisang and Huo Shaoxin.
Since Gu Changfeng hadn’t shown up after a long while, An Ge made a call to him.
However, the phone was off.
An Ge thought perhaps his phone had run out of battery, and decided to contact one of Gu Changfeng’s subordinates later.
It wasn’t until Huo Shaoyan successfully comforted Huo Chenghuan and returned downstairs, and the family happily finished their dinner, that Gu Changfeng still didn’t appear.
An Ge felt uneasy and pulled out Qin Ming’s number to call him,
"Did something happen to your boss?"
The voice on the other end of the line, Qin Ming’s, was clearly agitated,
"...We’ve been ambushed. Quickly ask President Huo to come help..."
An Ge felt her whole body go cold with fear upon hearing this, and broke into a cold sweat, "Alright..."
Of course, Huo Shaoyan overheard the call between An Ge and Qin Ming, and he had been waiting for a chance to prove himself to An Ge.
Before An Ge could say anything to him, he volunteered,
"Don’t worry. I promise to bring him back without a scratch."
It was destined to be a long and trying night.
The storm raged until midnight before it finally calmed.
Looking at the mess outside, An Ge’s heart couldn’t settle.
She wanted to call Huo Shaoyan to ask for details of the situation but feared that she might disrupt his rescue efforts.
She waited and endured, waited and endured, until just before dawn, finally receiving a call from Huo Shaoyan.
On the phone, Huo Shaoyan gave her a brief report of safety before ending the call.
Usually when things were handled this way, it meant the truth was far more complicated than it seemed.
But fortunately, Huo Shaoyan assured her that everything was fairly safe.
An Ge endured the night, and by dawn she had fallen into a groggy sleep.
A week passed like this.
During this week, Huo Shaoyan continued to contact her daily, but each call barely exceeded thirty seconds, only enough to briefly reassure her of his safety.
Yet with each call, An Ge could sense his voice becoming progressively more fatigued.
An Ge realized that Gu Changfeng must have encountered a serious obstacle, otherwise it wouldn’t take an entire week to resolve things.
Still, An Ge wouldn’t allow herself to grow excessively anxious over it.
She trusted that they would manage to overcome the danger.
Before ending each call with Huo Shaoyan, An Ge would always remind him to stay safe and not overexert himself.
One week later, in the evening, after An Ge finished dinner with the children, her phone suddenly vibrated vigorously — a sound she hadn’t heard in nearly a full day and night.
An Ge thought it was Huo Shaoyan and grabbed the phone the moment it rang.
But this time, it was Jiang Fengmian calling.
For no apparent reason, An Ge’s heart tightened.
Even when Huo Shaoyan was extremely busy, he always found time to contact her these past days. When he couldn’t, he’d at least send a text to reassure her.
But now... it was Jiang Fengmian calling instead.
Could something have happened?
An Ge’s fingers trembled as she pressed the answer button, her voice shaky from the tension,
"Young Master Jiang, is... is something wrong with Huo Shaoyan and the others?"
"If you’re not dealing with anything urgent right now, come to the hospital."
At the mention of the hospital, An Ge’s voice tightened, "The... the hospital?"
Jiang Fengmian detected the unease in her tone and said with malicious amusement:
"Yes. If you’re late, you might not get a chance to see him. Hurry."
He paused briefly,
"Make sure to dress properly. After all, it could be his last memory of you."
"...Oh." After a long moment, An Ge managed to find her voice, "You... you’re not joking with me, are you?"
"Ms. An, do you think I’m the type to joke? Have you ever seen me joke with anyone?"
An Ge’s entire body tensed; her voice was charged with emotion, "Then... what about Gu Changfeng?"
"He... is fine."
An Ge let out a weak "Oh."
After hanging up, An Ge hurriedly went upstairs to change into... a rather formal long dress.
The black, high-waisted long dress conveniently concealed her slightly rounded belly.
Downstairs, she instructed Nanny Lin to look after Huo Shaoxin and the two little ones before hurriedly leaving Castle Manor.
By the time she arrived at the hospital, night had fully fallen.
She stepped out of the car, just as she entered the brightly-lit hospital building, a sharp voice called out to her.
"An Ge, stop right there."
It was Fu Rou.
An Ge ignored her.
She strode directly toward the elevator.
But Fu Rou was relentless.
She had Lin Keke, who accompanied her to the hospital, block An Ge’s path, then ran in front of her and obstructed her way.
An Ge’s face turned cold as she spoke curtly, "Move aside!"
Fu Rou, even more emotional than she was, shouted angrily:
"You demoness! My son is nearly dead because of you, and you still dare to show up here..."
An Ge didn’t bother responding to her and instead addressed Lin Keke:
"Keep your godmother in check. If you cross me, you’ll all face consequences."
Lin Keke feared An Ge and what she represented even more — the formidable backing of Gu Changfeng— leaving her no choice but to offend Fu Rou.
Lin Keke restrained Fu Rou and said to her,
"Godmother, I think President Huo would most prefer to see Ms. An right now. Please... don’t make things difficult for her... Slap—"
Before Lin Keke could finish, Fu Rou slapped her across the face.
Seizing this window of opportunity, An Ge broke away from Fu Rou’s hold.
She entered the elevator, and five minutes later, she appeared at the doorway of Huo Shaoyan’s hospital room.
Even though she desperately wanted to know Huo Shaoyan’s condition, at this very moment, she couldn’t bring herself to push the door open.
It wasn’t until an impatient Jiang Fengmian called to urge her that she steeled her resolve to step inside.
As she pushed the door open, she answered Jiang Fengmian’s call, "Are you here yet? If not, his body will be cold soon..."
She pushed the door open and saw Jiang Fengmian, dressed in a white coat, standing by the window with his phone in hand.
He glanced at her with a teasing expression before hanging up.
Realizing she had been fooled, An Ge was about to take her anger out on him when Jiang Fengmian gestured toward her, "Come here."
An Ge ignored him and walked straight toward the hospital bed instead.
However, the person lying in the bed wasn’t Huo Shaoyan but Gu Changfeng.
Gu Changfeng was unconscious, his gaunt face visible beneath the oversized hospital gown. With no obvious external injuries, An Ge couldn’t determine the cause of his condition.
Turning back, An Ge asked Jiang Fengmian, "What happened to him?"
Jiang Fengmian replied flatly, "Isn’t it obvious? He barely escaped death." He paused, "Don’t touch him; his body is practically riddled with shrapnel."
An Ge’s eyes reddened upon hearing this, "Who did this?"
Jiang Fengmian said, "You should ask your man about that. He spent several sleepless days chasing the mercenaries at sea before finally catching them."
An Ge asked, "How’s he doing now?"
"He’ll live. He just needs rest; he’ll be fine."
Relieved, An Ge asked about Huo Shaoyan’s whereabouts, "Where’s he?"
Jiang Fengmian pointed toward an inconspicuous corner of the hospital room, where a simple folding recliner sat,
"Over there."
An Ge followed his gesture and saw a man lying on the folding recliner, his face drawn and utterly fatigued.
His eyes were shut tight, his breathing was heavy yet steady.
An Ge instinctively moved closer, crouching down beside him.
She softly called his name, "Huo Shaoyan..."
Jiang Fengmian raised a brow,
"You’re probably not waking him up. Qin Lang mentioned he hasn’t closed his eyes for four days and four nights."
An Ge’s tense heart gradually relaxed.
As she gazed at Huo Shaoyan’s peacefully sleeping face, she spoke to Jiang Fengmian:
"Why didn’t you let him sleep on the bed?"
