Chapter 283: Chapter 283 Obsession

After a long, lingering kiss, Huo Shaoyan casually said to An Ge, "It’s already been taken care of. How are things on your end? What did Anna, Huanhuan’s attending physician, say?"

An Ge’s cheeks were slightly flushed, and her voice was husky with emotion.

She said, "We’ve scheduled Huanhuan’s surgery for the first day of next month. But before that, you’ll need to undergo a series of tests and make some physical preparations."

Pausing for a moment, she added, "You absolutely must avoid smoking and drinking. Especially alcohol—not a single drop."

For someone undergoing liver surgery, avoiding alcohol was common sense.

Huo Shaoyan murmured assent and after a pause, said in a meaningful tone, "Well then, let’s not drag it out. We should go to the civil affairs bureau and finalize the remarriage."

An Ge was somewhat shocked. "Isn’t that too rushed? I’m not prepared at all..."

"You don’t need to prepare—just bring your ID and yourself, and that’s enough."

An Ge thought for a moment, then asked, "Is something going on..."

Huo Shaoyan interrupted her, "What could possibly affect our remarriage? You’ve confirmed with Anna about Huanhuan’s surgery date, so there’s no way you can back out of our remarriage now."

An Ge nodded in agreement with his words. "You’re right. At this time, nothing is more important than my daughter’s life."

The remarriage procedure went smoothly.

They arrived at the civil affairs bureau, and within a few minutes, they had completed the process.

As An Ge looked at the red cover of their marriage certificate, it felt surreal to her, as if she was in another world.

She stared at the marriage certificate in a daze, and when she was about to walk over to where Huo Shaoyan was on the phone not far away, a call from Fu Rou came in.

Fu Rou had wanted to speak with her back in the hospital but had waited until now, so it must be something important.

Thus, An Ge halted her steps toward Huo Shaoyan and answered the call from Fu Rou, "Hello?"

Fu Rou was straightforward, "I couldn’t stop Ah Yan from remarrying you, but there’s something I feel is necessary to tell you."

An Ge asked, "What is it?"

"An Muxin is pregnant, and the child is Ah Yan’s."

It was like having a bucket of ice water dumped over her head; in the height of summer, An Ge felt cold to her bones, a chill that seemed to seep into every crevice.

Beyond that, her first thought was of Nan Xiao.

Nan Xiao had just recently married Xiao Chaofeng, and then Nan Yun had become pregnant with Xiao Chaofeng’s child.

Originally, An Muxin had been like a persistent shadow, hard to shake off, and now that she was pregnant with Huo Shaoyan’s child, there would be more complications.

An Ge remained silent.

Fu Rou continued, "You can’t hide a pregnancy forever; you’ll find out sooner or later."

An Ge laughed slightly and said, "I’ll find out sooner or later, but why are you telling me right after I finished the remarriage? If you had any good intentions, you should have told me early, or if you weren’t so inclined, you could have waited, so at least I wouldn’t feel like an idiot now!"

"Because I couldn’t stop Ah Yan’s insistence on remarrying you, I had to do something to feel better."

Fu Rou confessed, stating openly, "I’ve long told you that you and Ah Yan are unsuitable. Your intentions in approaching him aren’t pure. In my eyes, An Muxin is the ideal daughter-in-law. She’s beautiful, wealthy, and well-connected, smart and wise, and most importantly, her blood can alleviate my grandson Huai Shang’s strange illness. Besides, she’s now pregnant with Ah Yan’s child..."

An Ge’s expression turned cold. "So what?"

"So, An Ge, you’re a smart woman. You should already know the answer. Ah Yan wronged you before, and I also owed you. So, out of guilt, I agreed to let Ah Yan donate a part of his liver to save your daughter’s life."

Fu Rou paused after saying that, then continued, "But I hope, just as you once said, that once your daughter recovers, you both will leave. Leave Ah Yan. After all, you don’t love him, do you?"

...

After finishing his call, Huo Shaoyan raised his head to see An Ge standing in the sunlight.

Her complexion looked almost pale in the sunlight, her eyes staring vacantly ahead, and she didn’t seem well.

Huo Shaoyan’s thin lips pressed into a straight line, and he strode briskly toward her.

His appearance cast a shadow blocking the light in front of her, putting her entire face in his shadow.

An Ge’s unfocused pupils finally moved.

She lifted her head, seeing the man’s gaze looking down at her, his handsome face subtly tinged with coldness.

She opened her mouth, her tone rather complaining but didn’t mention Fu Rou’s call at all.

She said, "You were on the phone for so long; I almost got baked by the sun..."

"Mrs. Huo," the man spoke heavily, pinching her chin with his fingers.

His Phoenix Eyes locked onto her brows without blinking, his gaze wrapped in a bit of obsession, yet his tone was distinctly oppressive, "Do you know how bad you look right now?"

An Ge replied, "Huh? Maybe I didn’t get enough rest and got a little heatstroke..."

The man cut her off, "I was on the phone for just ten minutes, and you managed to get heatstroke in that time? Moreover, it’s cloudy today. At least five minutes during my call, the sky was overcast. So, tell me, who made you this unhappy?"

"No... no one made me unhappy."

An Ge clung to his arm, putting all her weight against him, saying, "Let’s go. It’s really hot; I’m feeling dizzy and not too comfortable."

Huo Shaoyan’s thin lips pressed tight, his muscles twitching slightly.

In this state, he actually looked quite intimidating, and An Ge felt a bit apprehensive about him.

She frowned slightly and said, "President Huo, what exactly are you being so paranoid about? I really just didn’t get enough rest and got a bit of heatstroke. Find me a cool place to rest, and I’ll bounce back soon."

Huo Shaoyan held her hand and led her to the car.

An hour later, they stopped at a secluded mountain retreat surrounded on three sides by mountains.

Huo Shaoyan led An Ge from the car, through a shaded path, into the heart of the resort.

With mountains and flowing waters and lush flora, it indeed made for a perfect summer escape.

After booking a room, Huo Shaoyan took her there for some rest.

The room had a stunning view, with a waterfall cascading down outside the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Surrounded by towering mountains, the flowing waterfall looked as beautiful as a galaxy spilling down from the sky.

Huo Shaoyan told An Ge, "If you’re tired, just lie down and nap for a while. I’m going to find Feng Mian to chat about something."

An Ge gave a small sound of acknowledgment and asked, "Does this place belong to Young Master Jiang?"

Huo Shaoyan nodded, then turned and left.

Alone, An Ge sat cross-legged on the carpet by the windows, lost in thought for a long time, without going to bed to rest.

Her mind was a chaotic mess, on the verge of exploding.

One moment it was Huo Chenghuan’s surgery, then it was Huo Huaisang’s illness, and then Fu Rou’s call kept echoing in her ears.

She felt like she was in the worst situation she’d been in for years.

She was bewildered, even at a loss.

It was at this moment that Anna’s call came through.

An Ge answered, "What’s up?"

Anna said, "You previously asked me to keep an eye on Lee Dahai, as you suspected. An Baoying is faking her madness. Half an hour ago, after An Baoying’s prenatal checkup at the hospital accompanied by Huo Zhendong, she secretly went to meet Lee Dahai, who is caring for Bai Meilan at the hospital."

An Ge narrowed her eyes and said, "Don’t startle them yet. An Baoying loathes me to the core. She pretends to be crazy, one, to buy herself a chance to survive, and two, to avenge me. If she’s risking a meeting with Lee Dahai at this juncture, she must have ulterior motives. Have someone continue to monitor them. Let’s see who else they’re conspiring with, because this time, I want to hit her so hard she won’t get up again."

Anna said, "Understood."

An Ge then said, "I’m worried An Baoying might retaliate against the children. Assign a few more bodyguards to secretly protect Huanhuan and the Young Master..."

Pausing, she added, "Additionally, ask Nanny Lin to pay more attention to what Huanhuan eats so that bad people don’t find loopholes."

After ending the call with Anna, An Ge’s thoughts seemed to clear up suddenly.

Just like her initial plan upon returning to the country.

She returned to heal Huanhuan’s illness and make An Baoying and Bai Meilan pay the price they deserved for the harm they caused, aside from investigating the mystery of her own origins.

Overall, her progress wasn’t bad.

So she shouldn’t allow other thoughts to arise.

Whether An Muxin was pregnant with Huo Shaoyan’s child or another woman was, it had nothing to do with her.

Thinking this, An Ge fully relaxed her body and mind.

She was exhausted and eventually climbed into bed, falling into a deep sleep.

When she woke again, it was an evening filled with spreading twilight.

The fiery clouds on the horizon seemed to engulf the entire sky, stunningly beautiful like a grand oil painting.

Huo Shaoyan hadn’t returned since he left the room.

An Ge, refreshed after sleep, felt alive and energized.

She got out of bed, stood by the glass window, and watched the orange twilight and the majestic flowing waterfall for a moment.

Her gaze retreated, and she pulled out Huo Shaoyan’s number, dialing it.
