Disheartened, I Fled from the CEO with Our Babies -
Chapter 261: Tenderness, Gentle
Chapter 261: Chapter 261: Tenderness, Gentle
An Ge had been waiting for those words.
As she grabbed the car keys and headed downstairs, she asked, "Shall I bring you some late-night food? What would you like to eat?"
An Ge rarely took the initiative and was seldom so obedient. Therefore, her words stirred considerable emotion in Huo Shaoyan’s heart.
His tone lightened a bit, "Anything is fine."
An Ge changed her shoes at the door, "How about dumplings?"
"Sure."
After ending the call with Huo Shaoyan, An Ge headed to the kitchen. She remembered that Nanny Lin had made quite a few dumplings and stored them in the freezer. She took out the beef dumplings and started boiling water to cook them.
Due to her worry about her son Huo Huaisang’s illness, she was not entirely focused on cooking the dumplings, and accidentally scalded her hand, causing a blister to form. She quickly ran it under cold water and then packed the cooked dumplings in a thermal container. Before leaving, she instructed Nanny Lin to take good care of Huo Shiqian and hurriedly left Fusheng Residence.
At night, the roads were clear, and within half an hour, she arrived at Jingcheng Hospital.
The man seemed to have calculated the timing, as she pushed the door open to get out of the car, he arrived a moment later. For some reason, two of the streetlights in the parking lot were out, and An Ge’s car was parked in the dark, but Huo Shaoyan spotted her at once.
She wore a white dress, and the night breeze played with its hem. As she walked toward him, a faint smile graced her face. Huo Shaoyan’s initial intention to walk toward her halted. His deep black eyes overflowed with an unsuspecting gentle tenderness. It was a kind of long-lost satisfaction—a satisfaction from seeing the woman he desired walking toward him with a smile.
An Ge swiftly reached him.
Maybe it was the stillness of the night, but at that moment, his gaze upon her felt different.
An Ge looked up at him, "I cooked dumplings for you. Do you want to eat them downstairs, or shall we go upstairs?"
Huo Shaoyan took the thermal container from her hand and then held her hand, "There are mosquitoes outside. Let’s go upstairs."
An Ge nodded, "Okay."
As they walked, she casually inquired about Huo Huaisang’s condition, "Is the little one okay?"
Huo Shaoyan kept a calm expression, "He’s fine, nothing major for now."
An Ge hesitated, "Does this happen often?"
"Once or twice a year."
"Do you know what causes it?"
"Most likely genetic." Huo Shaoyan stopped walking, turned, and gave An Ge a deep look, "Do you... care a lot about my son?"
An Ge didn’t want Huo Shaoyan to notice the panic in her eyes. She quickly diverted her gaze from his face and said,
"No, I just thought that since we’re planning to remarry... I’ll end up being Young Master Huo’s mother. Although as a stepmother, I shouldn’t be clueless about his matters, so I wanted to know more for the future, to get along better."
Huo Shaoyan raised an eyebrow, "Is that so?"
An Ge took a step forward, coming close to him. She looked up at him and said,
"Or else, do you think I have ulterior motives toward your son? Handling just you already leaves me exhausted. I don’t have the energy for any extra mischief."
Huo Shaoyan gazed down at her for a while, then replied, "Since you’re already here, let’s do a blood test."
An Ge felt her heart skip, "A blood test?"
Huo Shaoyan nodded and said,
"I’ve been raising him as my biological son for five years, yet I still don’t know who his mother is. This is a great mockery to me and a tremendous harm to Huaisang."
An Ge’s expression wavered, her eyes dodging his,
"Didn’t you already conduct a DNA paternity test with Young Master Huo and me? Plus, I’ve explained it to you clearly—our son perished in the fire back then. Why won’t you believe me..."
Huo Shaoyan frowned,
"There’s not much point to asking. Out of ten things you tell me, nine and a half are empty words, so on some matters, I just don’t trust you."
An Ge pressed her lips together, feigning indifference, "Suit yourself."
Under Huo Shaoyan’s arrangement, a tube of blood was quickly drawn from An Ge.
Afterward, Huo Shaoyan instructed his subordinates to send it urgently to the Huo Medical Biological Identification Center.
Once everything was arranged, he led An Ge to Huo Huaisang’s hospital room.
Huo Huaisang was sleeping soundly. An Ge tiptoed to the bedside, her gaze naturally examining him. Honestly, Huo Huaisang’s features strongly resembled those of Huo Shaoyan, particularly while asleep, where he looked like a smaller version of Huo Shaoyan.
Compelled by emotion, An Ge held his hand. The little guy’s height was impressive, but he was very thin, his hand lacking in plumpness, unlike Huo Chenghuan, who was all soft and chubby.
Thinking of how Huo Huaisang’s illness might have been caused by Bai Meilan and An Baoying, An Ge felt increasingly troubled.
She couldn’t imagine the extent of harm inflicted on her son over the years.
An Ge’s eyes teared up uncontrollably, turning red.
From the small table where he was eating the dumplings, Huo Shaoyan looked up inadvertently to see the redness in her eyes and the concealed shimmering tears.
His Phoenix Eyes narrowed deeply, his gaze lingering on An Ge’s face for a long time.
At length, he was certain that the intensely focused gaze An Ge directed at Huo Huaisang was one only a mother could muster. Otherwise, he couldn’t find another explanation.
Huo Shaoyan’s throat tightened as he withdrew his gaze, continuing to eat the remaining dumplings from the thermal container. The dumplings were slightly burnt, yet he thought they were the best he had ever tasted.
After finishing the dumplings and tidying up the lunchbox, Huo Shaoyan approached An Ge from behind, saying, "Huai Shang really likes you."
Upon hearing this, An Ge quickly collected her emotions from her eyes, turning to Huo Shaoyan with feigned surprise, "Really?"
Huo Shaoyan looked into her distinctly red eyes, answering softly, "Mm."
"He drew your portrait and hung it by his bed." After a pause, he added with a meaningful tone, "If you and I remarry, he should be very happy."
An Ge felt a pang of heartache.
What child wouldn’t love his own parents? Even deep down, Huo Chenghuan longed for a complete family, let alone Huo Huaisang, who had been deprived of a mother’s love since childhood.
An Ge began to doubt whether hiding the truth from Huo Shaoyan and preventing the child from recognizing him as his father was a selfish act on her part.
But she quickly dismissed the thought. Huo Shaoyan was unworthy of being a father.
He allowed Huo Huaisang to be mistreated to such an extent under his watch by An Baoying; how could he possibly be a good father?
Yes, a heartless man like him didn’t deserve children.
An Ge silently resolved that once Huo Chenghuan’s illness was cured, she would take Huo Huaisang away as well.
With that in mind, she told Huo Shaoyan, "Let’s go to the Civil Affairs Bureau tomorrow to remarry."
Only by remarrying could she become Huo Huaisang’s guardian, making it reasonable and legal for her to take him away in the future.
Unaware of An Ge’s thoughts, Huo Shaoyan was surprised by her statement.
He looked down at her for a while, saying,
"You’ve always been resistant to the idea of remarrying. Why the sudden eagerness and urgency?"
An Ge kept a composed demeanor, saying, "Because I want to assert my claim."
Huo Shaoyan raised an eyebrow, "Assert your claim?"
An Ge replied in a lazy tone,
"Yes. Until I remarry you, An Muxin won’t cease her antics. Tonight she could stage a self-inflicted injury; next time, she might try to assassinate me. I don’t want to remain so passive, nor stay in a state of constant dispute. So, the sooner we remarry, the better."
She paused and asked with a half-smile, "Why? Are you having second thoughts?"
Huo Shaoyan caressed her delicate face with his finger, saying,
"Your willingness to remarry is one of the outcomes I hoped for. Of course, I am delighted."
An Ge was momentarily stunned but soon realized the underlying meaning in Huo Shaoyan’s words.
She said, "If you still want me to bear you a child, it’s best to dismiss that thought. I’ve told you many times; five years ago, I had a difficult labor, severely damaging my body. It’s difficult for me to conceive again..."
Huo Shaoyan interrupted her,
"Difficult doesn’t mean impossible. It must be tried. Otherwise, I won’t give up."
An Ge found Huo Shaoyan’s attitude toward having children very determined and saw no point in arguing further.
Therefore, she shifted the topic, asking, "After we remarry, how do you intend to handle An Muxin?"
"An Muxin’s blood can alleviate Huaisang’s condition, reducing his blood loss and pain during episodes. Unless necessary, I can’t break off with her."
An Ge was a bit taken aback.
After a moment, she spoke,
"So you’re saying that you’ve indulged An Muxin all these years because Young Master Huo’s life requires her blood for treatment?"
Huo Shaoyan gazed at her for a while before saying, "You could see it that way."
An Ge’s mind replayed the phone conversation with Anna.
She wondered if perhaps An Baoying and Bai Meilan hadn’t meddled in Huo Huaisang’s condition; perhaps An Muxin had acted alone?
Could it be that An Muxin plotted secretly against Huo Huaisang in hopes of winning Huo Shaoyan’s love, ensuring that even for Huaisang’s treatment, Huo Shaoyan wouldn’t break ties with her?
However, these were all An Ge’s conjectures.
She had no evidence.
If the mysterious illness was indeed fabricated by An Muxin, it made her far more sinister than imagined.
In a few seconds, a multitude of thoughts swirled in An Ge’s mind before she quickly asked, "What’s the relationship like between Young Master Huo and An Muxin?"
Huo Shaoyan raised an eyebrow, "Why ask this suddenly?"
"I’m just asking casually."
Huo Shaoyan continued, "An Muxin has always wanted to have an outcome with me. Over the years, she’s invested much in Huaisang. In some respect, Huaisang trusts and relies on her significantly."
Huo Shaoyan raised his hand, gently pinching An Ge’s chin. His Phoenix Eyes gazed deeply into hers, affirming,
"Huaisang is our son, am I right?" He paused, "The way you look at him is just like how a mother would; you can’t fool me!"
