Chapter 161: Chapter 161 Pampering with a Kiss~
An Ge was certain about one thing: she was not Qin Huaisheng’s daughter. Before the Qin family incident, Young Master Huo had donated part of his liver to save Qin Huaisheng’s daughter, meaning the girl would have a surgical scar on her chest. An Ge had none. Her skin was spotless and smooth, not even bearing a mole.
After Secretary Jin left, An Ge fell into a long period of contemplation, eventually falling asleep on the sofa for the night. That night, Young Master Huo did not return. Despite the hotel’s well-functioning heating system, sleeping curled up on the sofa for a whole night not only left her more tired, but colder as well. The next day, An Ge caught a cold.
When she woke, she had a stuffy nose and a slight headache. After forcing herself to wash up, she checked the time. It was already nine in the morning. She seemed indifferent to the fact that the man hadn’t shown up as promised. After breakfast, when she was just about to contact Xiao Ye, Young Master Huo knocked and came in.
An Ge was fully dressed by then, and though the red in her eyes hinted at the contrary, her complexion seemed slightly better than when Young Master Huo last saw her the previous evening. He entered and placed a nutritious breakfast on the coffee table, then grabbed her wrist and pulled her onto his lap. His warm hand squeezed her soft fingers, and he kissed the corner of her lips indulgently, asking in a doting manner, "Why are your hands so cold?"
He had changed outfits, yet he still carried the lingering scent of a girl’s perfume. An Ge didn’t seem to care which woman he was with the night before, whether it was for business or for pleasure. In any case, she subtly pulled back her hand from his palm and said faintly, "Maybe I was born cold-blooded."
Saying this, she also attempted to get off the man’s lap. However, Young Master Huo held her by the waist, preventing her from succeeding. The disparity in physical strength between men and women was evident; she wouldn’t do anything in vain. She allowed Young Master Huo to hold her, glanced at the nutritious and exquisite breakfast he brought, and said, "I’ve already had breakfast."
The implication was that she couldn’t eat any more. Young Master Huo thought she was overly compliant, looking obedient but indifferent and distant. His dark eyebrows furrowed slightly as he said to her with extraordinary patience, "Are you mad at me because I didn’t come back last night to keep you company?"
An Ge shook her head, her nasal voice heavy, "No."
"You’ve caught a cold?"
She nodded, "A bit."
After saying that, she asked, "Aren’t you busy today?"
Young Master Huo, however, answered with a question of his own, "Dressed like that, you’re planning to go out?"
An Ge nodded again, "Just thought I’d wander around."
"With a cold, you still want to go out? The temperature in the Imperial City is below zero, four or five degrees, and your resistance is already poor. It’s best not to go out."
An Ge made a sound of agreement, "Okay."
Then, silence fell between them, as if they had plunged into a deep freeze where no one was willing to pick up the conversation thread again.
When there is no love, or when the love is not enough, it usually manifests in the most basic social interactions—neither party is willing to address the other first. Unless the one who loves more is willing to compromise, maintaining the relationship will be difficult.
Young Master Huo wasn’t a man known for his mild temper, so the fact that he found time within his busy schedule to see her was quite significant. He lifted her off his lap and stood up.
At nearly six foot three, his upward glance contained a heavy and cold aura, bringing an oppressive presence of absolute dominance that was hard for An Ge to ignore.
She looked up, met his downward gaze, vaguely felt that he was angry about something, and thought to herself. She spoke first, intending to break the stalemate between them for the sake of future ease, "If you’re particularly busy, you don’t have to stay with me."
Feeling irritable, Young Master Huo habitually pulled out a cigarette and placed it in his mouth. Just as he was about to light it, he noticed her silently putting on a mask.
The black mask covered her mouth and nose, leaving only her glowing, enchanting peach-blossom eyes exposed.
Young Master Huo pursed his thin lips, snapped the cigarette, and threw it in the trash. His voice was much colder and more detached than when he first entered, "I really don’t have time to accompany you."
He paused, "Nor do I have time to see your cold face. You should have a good rest. If you genuinely feel cooped up, it’s not impossible to go out, but you need to report to me before you do."
An Ge gave her assent, and Young Master Huo soon departed.
With her cold being quite severe, and the morning temperature not high, she ultimately stayed indoors.
By afternoon, Xiao Ye came to find her. Her original purpose for coming to the Imperial City was to understand the Qin family’s massacre case, but after Secretary Jin’s words made her realize her lineage had nothing to do with the Qin family, her interest in the case waned.
However, that didn’t mean she lost interest in this Imperial City, pervading her with a sense of familiarity. In some inexplicit way, she felt her roots were deeply embedded in this city. As for where they were buried, she didn’t know.
Thus, when Xiao Ye came and offered to show her around, An Ge readily accepted.
After getting into Xiao Ye’s car, she called Young Master Huo.
Perhaps due to being busy, Young Master Huo didn’t pick up.
An Ge had no choice but to send a text, reporting:
I’ve gone out, with Xiao Ye.
The man didn’t have time to take her call, so replying to her text was even less likely.
The message went unanswered.
Xiao Ye’s first stop with An Ge was Xiao Nancheng, an ancient street that had been there for thousands of years in the Imperial City.
After introducing Xiao Nancheng to her, Xiao Ye said, "Last night, Young Master Huo stayed at the Fu Mansion with An Baoying."
An Ge heard the underlying meaning and looked sideways at Xiao Ye in the driver’s seat, saying, "They’ve always had a thing going. My marriage certificate with Young Master Huo wasn’t exactly obtained through virtuous means, so their cohabitation doesn’t really matter to me."
With a tone of certainty, Xiao Ye said, "No. It does matter to you. You have feelings for him."
An Ge felt a tug at her heart but didn’t deny it. She looked at Xiao Ye for quite a while before speaking, "I wouldn’t say I like him. It’s just that, subconsciously, I seem to have formed some sort of attachment to him."
Xiao Ye mocked, "Is that so?"
An Ge replied, "Otherwise? If I truly had feelings for him, I wouldn’t be thinking about how to make a clean break when we eventually part ways."
The person in the situation often failed to see clearly.
An Ge, for now, was stuck in it, oblivious.
Xiao Ye didn’t continue discussing this topic but instead said, "Last night you asked me about the Qin Family’s Ancestral Tomb. I happened to hear some gossip at Mr. Fu’s birthday celebration."
Xiao Ye’s words piqued An Ge’s curiosity. She asked, "What did they say?"
Xiao Ye continued, "Years ago, Ms. Qin, Qin Huaisheng gave birth to Qin Xiaoqi out of wedlock. The identity of Qin Xiaoqi’s biological father has always been a mystery. Yet, despite this, many still pursued her, the most talented and virtuous socialite in the Imperial City. Not to mention, President Huo’s own Uncle Fu Huaijin has remained chaste for Qin Huaisheng and is still single to this day."
A man remaining chastely devoted to a woman who might long be dead in such a tempting era was indeed astonishingly committed.
An Ge was still a bit moved by this when Young Master Huo’s call came through.
"Where are you?" The man’s tone was icy, "Is your husband dead in your heart? Why are you fooling around with Xiao Ye? Do you have any sense of being a wife? Do you have any shame at all?"
An Ge took a deep breath and interrupted him, "Then, President Huo, may I ask, where is your sense of shame?"
