Chapter 306: 306. Can’t go back
Silhouettes hidden in the darkness of night stood one by one, holding their weapons with extraordinary excitement, ready to launch a big attack.
"Boss..." someone couldn’t help but shout excitedly.
"Hold steady, don’t scare away the fat sheep we’ve got," the bearded leader threatened with a glance, making everyone calm down considerably.
"They’re coming..."
Indeed, they came; silhouettes were seen approaching from the darkness, getting closer and closer, their breathing growing heavier, Hua Qiang’s eyes squinting narrower and narrower, and the villagers of Hua Village gripping their weapons tighter.
"Master, there are many rocks ahead," Xiaosi’s words—whether intentional or accidental—broke the calm.
Leaves rustled as the bearded leader’s voice signaled shadows to emerge from the roadsides, encircling the people in the center, casting malicious glances at the Hua Village people, the greed in their eyes undeniable even in the thick night.
"This tree is planted by me, this road is opened by me, robbery..." a sinister voice echoed in the night, startling a few birds, and leaves rustled down.
Seeing the people up ahead, though stopped by their sudden appearance, did not panic as expected, making the bearded leader frown.
"Be sensible and hand over your belongings quickly, our boss might be happy enough to spare your lives, or at least leave you a whole corpse... otherwise... don’t blame us for not..." being polite.
But the word "polite" was never uttered, as the robust and arrogant man standing before the bearded leader suddenly clutched his throat tightly, his mouth and nose flowing with fresh blood, collapsing and convulsing while wide-eyed, showing he could not rest in peace.
"Boss..." this scene shocked the group, instinctively clustering around their leader, faces showing fear.
Terrifying!
Murder, straight up killing when they arrived, with no semblance of decorum; they hit rough waters.
Very rough waters indeed, for on a pitch-black night, one arrow through the throat took a life. This archery... undeniably beyond their capability to contest.
The timid ones shrank their bodies, trembling at the rear, especially bowing their heads.
The bearded leader also trembled inside, too unexpected. If this arrow had been aimed at him, he’d be drenched in cold sweat, though he maintained composure outwardly, preventing those beside him from seeing his fear.
Even this sudden scene startled the villagers of Hua Village.
It was unimaginable for the usually soft-spoken, obedient village chief’s daughter to have such courage, shooting a crossbow arrow without a blink.
This temperament... too admirable, and the accuracy was enviable!
They hadn’t even seen the enemy clearly, only saw Hua Qiang raise his hand and casually shoot, and the opponent fell.
Such keen sight!
Now, everyone strongly suspected that the one who detected the group was not the village chief but Hua Qiang’s daughter.
As for cruelty, wouldn’t it be foolish to be lenient with those wanting to rob them, talking about sparing complete corpses—being soft-hearted with such people is ridiculous, isn’t it?
Even if Hua Qiang hadn’t shot out the arrow in his hand, they couldn’t help it, especially those who also had crossbows, all prepared, though not as quickly as Hua Qiang.
"Good!" Surprised followed by exciting cheers from everyone.
The bearded leader’s face turned darker; this reaction was even more arrogant than their robbing group’s, brazen provocation!
No matter the uneasiness in his heart, the bearded leader couldn’t tolerate it as the boss.
"Great, wonderful, this is the first time I, Lai Yansan, have encountered such audacity. You refuse good wine and want to drink penalty wine; originally, I wanted to give you an exit, but it seems you’ve made your choice. Brothers, go ahead, don’t hold back, let them taste our strength."
With a roaring shout, he thought his people would be engaged in a brawl with the enemy, but unexpectedly, most hesitated, afraid to move.
The bearded leader was fuming, his face iron-blue, stomping towards the nearest person, "Don’t forget your families," his sinister voice like a curse, nullifying any thoughts of resistance, with hesitant subordinates’ eyes flashing fear, daring not to retreat, raising weapons and charging forward.
"Kill..."
What kind of good people could be in league with the bearded scoundrel? They were just initially scared by the first arrow, none wanted to be next. But their boss’s threats allowed no disobedience, so survival meant being fiercer.
Unfortunately, they encountered the people of Hua Village.
The fiercest shouters running at the forefront didn’t even get a chance to reach Hua Village folks before being shot down by crossbow arrows, others quickly engaging Hua Qiang and the rest.
Hua Qiang closely followed her grandfather and brother, yet her spiritual power never relaxed, overseeing the field. Whenever any suffered a disadvantage, Hua Qiang’s crossbow arrow targeted that point, with people periodically struck, falling incapacitated.
Despite being constrained by his sister, Xiaosi occasionally tackled one or two using cunning and his dagger, incapacitating anyone injured by him with severed foot tendons, unable to stand.
Seeing everyone fighting desperately, Elder Hua could hardly remain uninvolved, though there was no room for him to intervene, as his granddaughter was in front, grandson at back, and two heirs protected him on both sides, preventing villains from approaching.
Hua Village people fought increasingly vigorously, with an initial timidity progressing to complete liberation, their swords wielded with formidable vigor, slaying one enemy after another.
For a time, the night was filled with screams, the battle quickly tilting to one side ending soon, leaving a few standing survivors scurrying back embarrassingly towards their equally battered boss in retreat.
No match were the rabble for Hua Village people; they were just ruffians banded together for malice, with not one real fighter among them.
Their weapons; merely machetes, kitchen knives, and hoes, were impotent against the Hua Village warriors’ shining swords.
"Boss, what do we do?"
Seeing his comrades falling, the surviving few were terrified, barely countering with trembling hands, one stuttering while parrying asked the bearded man who just narrowly dodged another blade.
The bearded leader was furious, had there been any spare attention, he’d have kicked them long ago.
Asking him what to do at such a time: protect him and then run!
The bearded leader glared hatefully at those still running while asking without intending to save him, fuming with plans for revenge upon returning.
But just as he dodged another fatal strike, rising pathetically, wanting to chop at a nearby person, a sharp pain struck his chest; lowering his head, he saw a delicate short arrow, tailwiggling, deeply embedded in his heart.
