Chapter 303: 303. Stupid

Meanwhile, Hua Jin had already returned to the small alley, barely standing for a moment before finding, through spiritual power, the villagers of Hua Village rushing over with his grandfather.

Hua Jin breathed a sigh of relief and, seeing them about to turn into the alley, unwittingly made a pile of supplies appear again.

"Sis... Sister..." Xiao Si ran quickly, shouting softly as he ran, his young face clearly worried.

But upon seeing his sister’s smiling face, Xiao Si immediately grinned with relief.

"Sis, we’re back. Uncle Hua Qiang and the others have all come."

Though he had grown a few years, he couldn’t change his restless nature, almost jumping to her side, full of joy.

"Nothing happened after we left, right?" Looking at the pile of stuff on the ground, Xiao Si smartly asked.

"What, you were hoping for something to happen?" With the matter resolved, Hua Jin, in a good mood, teased his brother.

"No, no," Xiao Si shook his head frantically, realizing he’d asked a silly question.

At this moment, everyone’s attention was attracted to the pile of supplies at the corner, their teasing completely unheard, as several dozen men crowded around, sweating as they tried to squeeze in.

"Wow, so many things, there’s even so much salt..." Exclamations kept ringing.

"Salt... That’s great, move aside, you’ve all seen it, let us take a look too!"

If those outside weren’t afraid of attracting attention, they would have shouted loudly.

"Alright, alright, do you feel uncomfortable not drawing others in? Go, go, everyone step aside, crowding like this, what does it look like?"

"Quickly, tidy up, we still need to leave," Hua Laohan looked disparagingly at the men, wishing they were warned upon arrival, yet they behaved like newly married youngsters, rash and lacking calm.

Even the usually calm Hua Qiang and Hua Rong were equally excited, foolishly smiling as they held the coarse salt!

Though their family had no less than this, these supplies gave them confidence, ensuring they wouldn’t worry in the future, saving a little, at least to persist longer.

The village chief is truly amazing!

After the excitement passed, everyone couldn’t help but gaze at Hua Laohan, their eyes openly admiring him.

In times like this, the village chief can still manage to gather so many supplies. How fortunate it is for their village to have such a leader!

They were even more determined to cling tightly to the village chief.

Since the disaster struck, Hua Laohan had seen too many gazes like these, becoming immune.

"Hua Qiang, Hua Rong, why are you standing there foolishly? Quickly organize everyone to pack up the things and carry them out," Hua Laohan shouted.

Luckily, when coming down the mountain, everyone had empty baskets. The pile of supplies looked vast, but after splitting, it wasn’t actually much.

All were hardened by labor; carrying a hundred or two hundred pounds on their backs was easy.

Soon, the supplies were evenly distributed into everyone’s baskets, tightly covered with torn cloth.

But seeing the bulging baskets, Hua Laohan frowned, realizing it was a blatant display of wealth that might invite robbery.

"Move out," the two words caught in Hua Laohan’s throat before swallowing them.

"Is everything packed?"

"Yes," Hua Qiang and the others were ready, just waiting for the village chief’s orders.

"Alright, since we’re ready, everyone rest here first."

People: "..."

They were already prepared to leave, only for this...

Baffled gazes uniformly turned to their village chief, with looks of clear stupidity, while only a few pondered the packed baskets.

"Village Chief, why aren’t we leaving? Weren’t we supposed to hurry back?" Hua Da, known for his simplicity, asked with confusion.

It’s not their fault. When the disaster struck, everyone hid in the mountains, never experiencing the so-called harshness, so their simplistic thinking was natural.

Hua Laohan also didn’t initially react, just wanting to leave quickly.

"No rush, it’s almost noon, and the weather is too hot; we’ll rest and wait until nightfall to leave."

"Wait until nightfall to leave..." Some still pondered, mumbling, as moments ago the urgency was palpable, but now it suddenly wasn’t.

Scratching their heads, they stared at the village chief, all muddled.

"Fool," Hua Qiang slapped the one who spoke foolishly.

"Why did you hit me?" The person seemed a bit unconvinced, stretching his neck to glare at Hua Qiang, although he didn’t move.

"I’m hitting you to clear your head," Hua Qiang rolled his eyes at Wang Erdan.

"What time is it now?"

"What, have you lost it? Isn’t it daylight?"

"Exactly, you know it’s daytime. We’re carrying so many supplies, walking openly around town isn’t it announcing to others we have valuable stuff?"

"We have baskets, and they’re covered tightly."

"Not everyone is a fool. An empty basket and one filled with goods aren’t the same. Do you believe we wouldn’t be surrounded before leaving town carrying these supplies?"

"No... we wouldn’t... right..."

Thinking of the emaciated people encountered along the way, Wang Erdan hesitated powerlessly over those three words.

"Feel free to test that..."

Upon hearing that, Wang Erdan shook his head vigorously, he decided to be sensible and obedient.

Having someone proactively solve problems was undoubtedly best, and seeing it was resolved, Hua Laohan cheerfully stepped forward again.

"Hua Qiang is right, I was careless earlier, safety comes first, we’ll leave after dark. However, this place isn’t sufficiently hidden; we need to find somewhere else."

"Grandpa, I found a place where we can rest temporarily, it’s rather secluded, follow me," Hua Jin spoke up at this moment.

Hua Jin was puzzled for a second when her grandfather asked everyone to rest but quickly figured it out, immediately using spiritual power to observe the surroundings.

They were located in a small alley within a partly collapsed house, only walls remaining, without even a door. The flaw was being too close to the street, with many such houses around; finding a more secluded one wasn’t difficult.

In just a moment, Hua Jin found a rather decent spot, with no traces of human activity around and distanced further from the street.

If his granddaughter said there was a spot, there must be, so Hua Laohan promptly called everyone to follow quietly with their supplies.

As for the looks of hesitation in Hua Qiang and others’ eyes, Hua Laohan simply pretended not to see them, sparing the need for explanations.

Thus, several dozen men followed Hua Jin left and right, twisting and turning to reach a similarly rooftop-free, wall-only, dilapidated house.

The difference being it was indeed very secluded, positioned within the innermost part of these houses, and they hadn’t encountered a soul en route, leaving Hua Jin’s dexterity mysterious.

No wonder the village chief trusts Hua Jin so much; this child is indeed very reliable.

Then everyone tidied up briefly, found a shady spot to sit, and waited for the dusk to arrive.
