Chapter 179. Leave the city
Chapter 179: 179. Leave the city
"Customer, will it be a silver note or cash?"
Seeing the pleased shopkeeper, Hua Chengtian dryly replied, "Cash."
The way my daughter spends money can be summed up in one word: "impressed"!
"Please wait a moment," Hua Chengtian said to the shopkeeper, then took his daughter and the assistant to drive the horse-drawn carriage to the backyard.
Then, under the gaze of the shopkeeper, they boldly took out a silver chest from the carriage, containing exactly four thousand Silver Taels, no more, no less. Hua Chengtian took out the remaining fifty taels from his person. As for the three thousand taels silver note that had been exchanged for silver, it was already spent on hoarding food.
This operation left the assistant and shopkeeper wide-eyed.
They had to know that the carriage had just been blatantly parked outside without anyone watching over it. Although no one would dare commit theft outside their blacksmith shop, leaving so much silver in the carriage while they went inside the shop was truly bold of this father-daughter duo.
The shopkeeper couldn’t dwell on his amazement because he was busy counting the silver, ensuring there was no issue and instructing the assistant to load the goods onto the carriage.
It was fortunate they bought new livestock and a carriage; otherwise, the old ox cart wouldn’t have had the space for so many weapons. Even so, the carriage was packed to the brim, with several weapons secretly stored away by Hua Jin into her space storage. Yet, the carriage shaft was still wrapped with dozens of iron sticks, and the father and daughter sat directly on them. Although uncomfortable, at least everything was loaded.
As the carriage gradually departed, one of the assistants whispered to the shopkeeper, "Boss, should we..." making a cutting gesture at the neck with his hand.
"Forgot what I said earlier?"
"To be cautious with elderly and children appearing alone."
"Do you remember anything useful I said?" The shopkeeper glared at the person beside him.
"But...they’re not appearing alone."
"Would you dare come with just two people to buy so many weapons?"
The assistant shook his head wildly. He might dare buy one or a few, but so many was truly daunting, mainly for fear of being double-crossed. Thinking of this, his expression became peculiar.
"So, such people either have strong backing or are incredibly capable themselves. Better not to get involved with them."
"The boss is truly wise," the assistant suddenly realized and looked at the shopkeeper with admiration, realizing his earlier rashness.
"Good to know; now, hurry and get back to work," the shopkeeper glared before flicking his sleeves and turning back into the shop.
Once they left the street, Hua Jin quickly stored the weapons in the carriage into her space. Seeing no one was watching, she also stored the iron sticks from under them.
"No one, right?" Since the carriage left the blacksmith, Hua Chengtian had been keeping an eye on their rear. It wasn’t paranoia; producing that much silver could easily attract attention, but he saw nothing suspicious. Still, he asked his daughter, who had sharper instincts, just to be safe.
"Nothing noticed," Hua Jin shook her head.
"Should be fine," Hua Chengtian relaxed a bit.
Trafficking weapons under the noses of officials, especially in such large quantities, meant these people probably weren’t interested in their little bit of silver. With this thought, Hua Chengtian felt even more relieved.
Despite this, they twisted and turned through various alleyways, only returning to the main street once they were sure no one was following them. With some time left, not wanting to waste it, the two began another buying spree. Nearly everything related to food was swept up. After buying a hundred roast chickens, it was almost evening, and they drove the carriage to exit the city.
At the city gates, Hua Jin noticed a few scrutinizing gazes, which dispersed after a glance at them.
Seeing a few familiar faces, weren’t they the ones who trailed them yesterday afternoon?
Indeed...they were persistent!
Hua Jin, like a curious child, looked around and exited the city grandly under their noses with her father.
Once out, Hua Chengtian, feeling like he’d broken some shackles, drove the carriage at full speed. They were outside New Moon City’s boundaries in less than an hour, and by then, the sky was gradually darkening.
Finally relieved, the father and daughter slowed the vehicle, eating a few buns on the carriage as they went.
Half an hour after the meal, dusk deepened, and the moving carriage stopped on a wide official road.
In this remote place, anything that happened would go unnoticed.
As soon as they got off, the carriage vanished into the night, replaced by a black SUV, blending perfectly into the dark night, leaving Hua Chengtian captivated.
"Daughter, how do you drive it?" Hua Chengtian was eager, his eyes shining brightly in the dark, waiting for his daughter’s instructions.
"Use this..." Hua Jin raised the key in her hand and demonstrated.
Hua Chengtian followed his daughter step by step into the car, his mouth agape, eyes sparkling. He seemed transformed into a curious child, marveling at everything inside the car, from the seat beneath him to the various interior features, all of which amazed him with their plush comfort.
"Dad, to drive the car, you need this key in my hand," Hua Jin gestured, "then insert the key here," she continued as she turned the key, and the sound of the engine starting rang out.
"Dad, did you hear that?"
Hua Chengtian nodded quickly.
He clearly heard it, and the unexpected sound startled him. Only his daughter’s presence kept him composed, preventing him from embarrassing himself.
"That’s the car starting. The power source is gasoline. Think of it like how livestock need to be well-fed. Gasoline is similar to feed; the car won’t work without it."
Intrigued, Hua Chengtian asked, "How do we know when there’s no gasoline?"
"Look here," Hua Jin pointed at the dashboard, "it will show when it runs out, triggering an alarm and lights."
She quickly and briefly introduced the car’s internal setup to her father, especially focusing on the brake, accelerator, and steering wheel—these were the most crucial.
Luckily, the car was automatic, so there was no need for a clutch. Teaching it wasn’t particularly difficult.
Hua Chengtian listened intently, carefully remembering each part. As his daughter drove, he observed carefully, feeling ready, even eager.
Watching his daughter gradually increase the speed, Hua Chengtian finally understood what his daughter meant by saying the speed was fast.
The two bright headlights illuminated the road ahead clearly. Even in the pitch-black of night, the car’s speed wasn’t hindered, nor were they affected by the rushing wind outside. The car’s interior protected their eyes from the wind’s sting, and the cooling breeze inside was remarkably comfortable.
His daughter explained it was the air conditioning, built into the car, though it consumed more gas—akin to being a gas guzzler.
Although it was comfortable, he frowned at the thought of consuming fuel and promptly had his daughter turn it off, instead opening the windows as she taught him. Warm air blew in, slightly forceful but genuinely pleasant.
