Chapter 97: Food
Mia’s grin widened with every passing second.
She was only watching Umbu, winking at him like she was sending a message.
The dragoon shuddered.
He jumped back at Noa, hiding beneath his clothes.
"Don’t be shy," Mia added, gesturing for Noa and Yun Qiqi to come on in. Without showing any reaction, she led them inside.
The little girl took the first step.
She walked behind Mia, following her with Puff still flickering in her hands.
Noa moved as well.
His steps were quick, basking in the warmth his home gave him.
Filled with a mouth-watering scent, the kitchen lured everyone in, forcing them to take even quicker steps.
On the table?
Meat!
Lots of it.
The big plates were filled with meat of every kind.
Including, but not limited to, beef, pork, lamb, and chicken, the table had everything. The air grew heavy because of them.
But the open windows couldn’t cleanse the aromatic smell.
Thankfully, it wasn’t a bad scent by any means. On the contrary, Noa almost cheered, squinting his eyes at Mia.
"You really outdid yourself, huh?" he said, and massaged the little creature.
Umbu and Qiqi gulped simultaneously.
Their hunger rose to the limit, forcing them to approach the table before anyone else.
Left all alone, Noa glanced at the scene from behind.
Grilled, roasted, steamed.
Some of them even had natural herbs and special powers added.
He then trailed his eyes and found Mia. The girl stood, arms crossed, her lips parted into a thin smile, trying not to look too proud.
Of course, she failed.
"Meat party," she declared, her voice louder than usual. "For our special guest."
Mia signaled at Umbu, who already sat behind the table like a kid, Yun Qiqi helping him with the etiquette, and armed him with paper towels.
Hearing Mia, he closed his half-open mouth.
The dragon sat still for a moment.
His eyes squinted, his tail wobbled around, and his tiny wings flipped gently.
As for his face, it showed how deeply in thought he was. It felt like he was contemplating what to do.
Then his nose twitched.
Though his favorite snack was mana, and he quite enjoyed sipping on the protein shakes as well, there was something different about meat.
He had only tasted it once.
But its rich aroma and mixture of heavenly flavors made his stomach rumble.
It was a different kind of hunger.
Something that only his body demanded, yet his will was too weak to resist.
His eyes continued scanning the plates. Then he flicked at Mia, his round eyes narrowing before looking back at the food.
"He doesn’t like you," Qiqi said out of nowhere.
She was in her own bubble, and, trying to mend the situation, she sounded honest but soft.
"I know," Mia answered instantly, her head still hung high, waiting for the dragon to do something. "That’s what I am trying to fix."
Noa, meanwhile, watched the scene as Umbu gulped and moved his paws.
He looked skeptical.
But there was a strong trace of interest and starvation on his face, forcing him to touch the plates.
His appetite was winning.
As Noa sat as well, Yun Qiqi leaned in. "This might work," she whispered.
Noa nodded. "Maybe," he said, waiting.
Mia, however, didn’t linger, picked up the pace, and stood next to Umbu, crouching to his level.
"I don’t know why you don’t seem to like me. But I am sorry if I scared you the first time we met," she spoke, her voice growing gentler. "Let’s start from over, shall we?"
Umbu blinked at her.
He didn’t make any sound, just silently stared.
Then he sniffed her and paused.
The dragon smelled a strong meat scent from her, checking how much she worked just for him.
He shifted his attention back to the plate.
Suddenly, his closed mouth opened. His jaw stretched big enough and stayed that way.
As everyone watched him in surprise, not understanding what he was trying to do, Yun Qiqi yelped swiftly, pointing at Mia, advising her on what to do. "Feed him."
Her voice was sweet.
Despite that, Mia felt what she was trying to say.
She also looked at the dragon, and, to her absolute surprise, Umbu seemed patient, his mouth still waiting for the food.
Mia frowned.
However, she tried it.
At first, it was a bit awkward, especially when she had to slice the meat into tiny pieces and feed them to Umbu.
But her feelings were genuine.
The little dragon could tell that much, tilting his head lower.
And slowly, he accepted the food directly from her fingers and chewed it hurriedly.
The second piece followed soon after.
After the third bite, Umbu’s eyes glowed, his paws shaking from pleasure. He glanced at Mia from the corner of his eye. This time... this time he didn’t look away, letting his eyes linger on her.
Qiqi stood from her seat, almost clapping with excitement.
"He is eating," she exclaimed, congratulating Mia. "You did it. I knew he would open up to you."
Mia coughed.
She didn’t stop cutting the meat into tiny chunks.
Even her pricked-up nose didn’t stop showing her confidence. "There is nothing I can’t do."
Seeing this, Noa chuckled.
He didn’t expect the situation to escalate so abruptly.
’Cute,’ he muttered inwardly.
There was a mix of emotions surging through him now, gratitude rushing strongly in his heart.
But—
Yun Qiqi, the troublemaker number 2 and rascal of the century, wasn’t done.
Not yet.
She moved, slipping past Umbu’s guard, and touched his bare back. Her fingers pressed long enough to make his tail shift toward Mia.
The troublemaker number 1 nodded immediately.
She got an assist and wouldn’t miss it, catching the dragon’s tail and twisting it on her arm.
Mia laughed as well.
"You are softer than I thought," she said, winking.
Umbu’s eyes widened in mid-chew, as if surprised by what happened.
But—
He flickered his tail.
This time on his own—on purpose.
So it left Mia holding his tail, her fingers ready to squish a soft belly, bridging the crack between them.
Just then, the entrance door opened.
"It was about time," Noa thought, looking at his sister.
