Chapter 65 – Dimensional Biology (Part 2)

"The predators are also divided into categories," Miss Sel continued, raising the chalk to the top portion of the triangle she had drawn. "There are Passive Predators, Active Predators, and Pinnacle Predators."

She tapped the board firmly with each name.

"In general, these are the creatures you’ll face as Dimensional Knights. They are violent, bloodthirsty, and relentless. Every species within these predator classes poses a significant threat to the realms. Their attacks cause devastation on a daily basis."

The classroom remained silent. Everyone listened with focused intensity, scribbling down her every word. They understood the stakes. Knowledge could mean the difference between life and death in the field. Even the smallest detail might save their lives one day.

"Among these categories," Sel continued, "Passive Predators are the least dangerous—but that is only in relative terms. Compared to prey, they are still significantly more powerful. However, Active Predators are far more problematic. They’re stronger, more aggressive, and vastly more common."

A student near the front raised his hand.

"Yes?" she called on him.

The boy stood halfway, his expression curious. "If Active Predators aren’t the strongest, why are they considered the most problematic?"

"An excellent question," Sel replied with a nod, clearly pleased by the inquiry. "There are two main reasons. First, while they may not be the most powerful, their strength is still considerable—enough to challenge and even kill most Dimensional Knights. Unless you’re exceptionally capable, you won’t face them and come out unscathed. Second—and more importantly—they are numerous. More common than Pinnacle Predators and stronger than Passive ones, they sit at the apex of both quantity and capability."

’That makes sense,’ Zane thought, his fingers pausing on his keyboard. ’They’re the worst-case scenario for an average Knight. Too common to avoid. Too strong to ignore.’

The triangular system Miss Sel was describing wasn’t designed to cover every fine detail. It was a broad classification—but in a world of infinite species and unknown threats, this was the most effective structure they could hope for. The finer details would have to be learned on the go. Observation, analysis, survival.

’And that’s where Dia comes in.’

"How many species are in your database, Dia?" Zane asked in a hushed voice.

"I have catalogued information on approximately 15 billion species across all dimensions," she replied flatly. "However, not all entries contain complete data. The rarer the species, the harder it is to obtain extensive documentation."

"Figures... The stronger or rarer they are, the harder they are to study."

Meanwhile, Miss Sel continued speaking, her tone darkening.

"And finally... at the very top of the food chain—above all others—are the Pinnacle Predators."

She tapped the peak of the triangle with a sharp clack.

"These are the apex monsters of existence. The most dangerous entities known to the realms. Even the weakest of them requires a squad of the strongest Dimensional Knights to confront. They are rare, but once they appear... they become a threat to entire worlds."

The room fell silent. The tension became palpable.

"A whole world...?"

"Wait, what?"

"To put it into perspective," Sel said, her voice calm but heavy, "the last recorded sighting of a Pinnacle Predator was twenty years ago. The incident occurred in a world labeled X-47."

She let the name hang in the air a moment before continuing.

"At the time, it was a newly discovered realm. We had not yet dispatched a Scout Unit. But by the time we did, it was already too late. Every trace of life—every living organism, every plant, every creature—was gone. Erased."

Her words hit like ice.

"No survivors. No remains. No signs of battle. Just silence."

The weight of her words settled over the class like a heavy fog. Some students’ faces paled. Others simply stared ahead, struggling to process what they’d heard.

"Just... one creature did all that?" someone whispered.

Miss Sel nodded.

"When a Pinnacle Predator arrives, it doesn’t invade. It consumes. It ends ecosystems, collapses civilizations, and renders entire worlds dead. We label any such realm with the prefix ’X’ and a number to track their loss. X-47 was the forty-seventh world in our history to suffer that fate."

A cold chill passed through the class.

"One being..." another muttered.

"Wiped out an entire planet..."

"That’s beyond comprehension..."

"They’re not monsters," Sel said firmly. "They are forces of nature. Fortunately for all of you, they are exceedingly rare. In fact, most Knights live out their entire careers without ever encountering one. Or even hearing of one."

That small comfort sparked a wave of nervous relief across the classroom.

"Damn... for a second I thought we were going to be thrown at one next week..."

"I never want to see something like that, ever."

"Nobody does, idiot. We’d be dead before we even saw it."

Laughter broke through the tension. Nervous, awkward, but laughter nonetheless. The morbid realization had shocked them all—but if it wasn’t relevant to their training, it was easier to push it aside.

Zane remained quiet.

’World Enders,’ he repeated in his mind. ’A fitting name. But how? How does a creature gain so much power that it can erase a planet?’

He clenched his fist beneath the desk.

’To rise to that level... that must be the true path of power. Not money. Not fame. Power that bends reality. Power that ascends beyond the very fabric of the world. There is truly nothing more important than power. It’s what leads to everything else. Is that what my system is meant for? Or will it destroy me before I get there?’

"Only time will tell," he muttered under his breath.

Miss Sel raised her hand again, silencing the whispers and jokes.

"Now, I must clarify: You are not required to study Pinnacle Predators during your training. The focus of this course will be on the first four tiers—Passive Prey, Active Prey, Passive Predators, and Active Predators. Pinnacle threats, while real, are beyond your scope for now."

’No kidding,’ Zane thought. ’Even studying them would probably get me killed.’

"Instead, we will focus on common species—the ones you are most likely to encounter across various realms. Despite the incredible variety, certain species have adapted and spread widely across dimensions. You’ll either encounter them directly or variants that share their traits."

She tapped on her personal device, and almost instantly, a soft beep echoed across the class.

All the students received a notification.

Zane blinked.

’Document received: Common Species Across Dimensions.’

He raised an eyebrow. ’Not bad. This file-sharing thing is pretty efficient.’

Opening the document, he began to scroll through the first few paragraphs—detailed descriptions, visual diagrams, and behavioral notes filled the page.

This was only the beginning.
