Chapter 142: This Is Serious Business

The black-robed figure completely ignored that last comment.

What traitor faction didn’t have schemes cooking? Nothing new there.

The real kicker was what came before.

"Would they actually rat themselves out?"

The black-robed figure asked without thinking, torn between conflicting thoughts.

Considering the traitors’ track record, both men shared a knowing look.

"This is serious business—gotta get word to the lord right away! Let him call the shots!"

The Black Poison Faction was no joke—their arsenal of poisons could drop you before you knew what hit you.

This was way above the black-robed figure’s pay grade.

Soon as he finished talking, he spun around and hightailed it out of there.

After watching the black-robed figure disappear, Salimo reached out his gnarled hand and smoothed down the wolf-head parrot’s ruffled feathers.

Thinking to himself: "The big guns are moving in."

Even if they got lucky and took out the Black Poison Faction later, it didn’t mean they were home free.

With years of experience in dirty work and cover-ups, Salimo knew he might very well be next on the chopping block.

He needed to play this smarter.

"Running short on manpower. Should’ve known better than to send Gal and the others on that wild goose chase."

Thinking about his men he’d sent off treasure hunting, he got a real bad feeling in his gut.

...

White Poplar Desert, deep in the red poplar forest.

Investigator Diliya was carefully and lovingly painting Purple Vortex’s fingernails—one hand black, the other emerald green.

She was putting her heart and soul into it.

"Lord Purple Vortex, just look at these nails—absolutely flawless."

Diliya admired her handiwork.

Sure, the mismatched hands made her skin crawl, but she’d worked her magic and gotten those nails looking perfect.

"Roar?"

Purple Vortex held up its hands—black nails and emerald nails coming into view.

Definitely looked better than before!

But when it glanced over at the woman’s hands for comparison, it could tell there was still a world of difference.

Catching Purple Vortex’s stare, Diliya threw up her hands in defeat.

Even the best nail work needed quality materials to start with.

Her nails were pampered day and night with psionic energy—they were the backbone of her spirit techniques.

How could anyone else’s nails even come close?

"Roar!"

Purple Vortex stuck out its hand, signaling the woman to keep going—it still wasn’t happy with the results.

"Alright, I’ll buff them some more..."

Diliya couldn’t see what else there was to buff, but being under the skeleton’s thumb, she had to play along.

Reluctantly picking up her tools, she went through the motions of grooming again.

While she worked, at least the hungry look in this monster’s eyes had died down quite a bit.

Seemed like her survival strategy wasn’t a complete bust.

So Diliya would pause now and then, acting deep in thought, constantly testing different tools against Purple Vortex’s nails, putting on a real show of concentration.

Purple Vortex watched without making a sound.

It didn’t dare butt in or even twitch, scared of messing up the woman’s performance.

The whole scene looked surprisingly peaceful.

Just then, explosive sounds started booming from the sky, getting closer fast.

Diliya looked up curiously toward the noise.

A golden light was screaming through the air at breakneck speed.

"That golden light rings a bell..."

Diliya felt like she’d seen it before.

"Roar!"

Sensing its master’s return, Purple Vortex jumped up eagerly to welcome him.

Diliya’s memory clicked: "The lord’s back!"

She looked up at the sky with excitement.

Nobody knew what hell she’d been through these past few days.

Every single moment under this monster’s hungry stare.

Diliya was a nervous wreck—couldn’t eat a decent meal, couldn’t catch a wink of sleep.

Wanted to make a run for it, but weighing her odds, didn’t dare try.

Could only stick around this area—more like within spitting distance of this monster.

These days nearly drove her batty, finally boring her into giving the thing a manicure.

"Boom!"

Carlos touched down, his eyes landing on the worse-for-wear investigator.

Good.

Though she looked like she’d been through the wringer, all her body parts were still attached and accounted for.

Purple Vortex had followed orders to the letter—very good.

Carlos’s approving look fired up Purple Vortex:

"Roar!"

Master’s approval again!

Purple Vortex was over the moon, eyes rolling around, about to sidle up to Carlos.

Suddenly: "Boom!"

Scorching heat waves blasted down from the sky.

High overhead, a fireball was diving down with hellish heat!

"Roar?!"

Enemy attack!

Purple Vortex immediately raised its massive shield, covering itself and its master.

It was steaming mad—wanted to see who had the guts to crash its reunion with master!

Terrifying energy burst out as Dark Purple Force Field shot skyward like a spear, carrying bone-chilling power straight into the clouds!

Red Spirit, hot on the trail, saw the scene below of Carlos being covered by some strange monster.

Rage immediately boiled up in its heart:

"Wah!!!"

Master was being held hostage by a monster!

"Boom!"

In a heartbeat, terrifying fiery red flames erupted all around it.

The sky instantly changed colors—overwhelming flames formed a devastating sea of fire that came thundering down!

"What in blazes is happening!!!"

On the ground, Diliya watched in pure terror as two terrifying powers clashed.

Her body’s instincts were screaming bloody murder as sweat poured down her forehead and neck.

"Run!"

She wanted to bolt, but the hellish sea of fire suddenly appearing in the sky covered way too much ground—no way to escape!

In desperation, Diliya looked toward Purple Vortex, her reluctant companion these past few days.

That oppressive purple energy field and heavy shield looked like absolute protection!

She wanted in on that safety!

"Lord Purple Vortex!"

But unfortunately Purple Vortex had no attention to spare for her, dead set on wiping out whatever monster dared attack from above!

The sudden face-off between his two top lieutenants caught Carlos a bit off guard.

"How’d they start throwing punches already?"

His head started pounding—the misunderstanding happened faster than lightning.

Just about to call them off, but then figured:

"Perfect chance to see which of my two heavyweights packs more punch?"

Besides, this spot was in the deepest part of White Poplar Desert with practically no outsiders to mess things up.

As their master, Carlos could call time-out whenever he wanted.

So Carlos settled back to enjoy the show...

...

The Dark Purple Force Field radiating oppressive power and the fiery red flames blazing with terrifying heat crashed together in mid-air!

"BOOM!!!"

In an instant, the sky changed colors, the earth shook, sending out waves of bone-crushing air pressure!

The surging sea of fire got scattered to the four winds, breaking apart into countless fireballs like a meteor shower of flames raining down on the surrounding ground.

Trees on the ground got torched in a heartbeat!

Only deep craters were left behind!

As the sea of fire broke apart, the Dark Purple Force Field shuddered slightly, its color fading quite a bit—clearly that hit wasn’t a walk in the park.

But it still radiated absolutely terrifying oppressive force.

"Monsters! Complete monsters!!!"

Diliya witnessed the whole thing, shaken to her core.

So this was Purple Vortex’s real power!

The mystery flame creature in the sky was just as terrifying.

Looking around, fallen flames had set nearby trees ablaze. The surging sea of fire had actually surrounded this area and kept spreading inward.

Heat waves kept slapping her in the face as Diliya’s expression went dark as thunder.
