Did You Destroy the World Today? -
Chapter 8: An Interesting Young Man
"Lin Xu! Run!"
......
"Run!"
"Lin Xu! Run!"
......
"You only have 15 seconds left! Run!
......
The next day was the weekend, so Lin Xu spent almost the entire night shuttling between the Bracelet World and the real world.
He became the most devoted visitor at Tianqiong Technology's exhibition hall, immediately doing three things upon entering the bracelet:
Strip equipment, enter the exhibition hall, view exhibits. He didn't bother searching for additional clues because time was simply too limited.
In the Bracelet World, he couldn't bring anything out with him - all he could rely on was his own memory.
Thus, he had to seize every second to record what he saw before his memory faded.
Bad news: The more times he entered the bracelet, the more mental energy it consumed, and the more severe his memory deterioration became.
Good news: The Star Voyager-1 project introduction displayed in the exhibition hall was inherently somewhat "customer-oriented" and educational in nature. Anything he managed to remember could be directly transcribed and used.
After nearly 8 hours and 5 repeated entries into the Bracelet World, Lin Xu finally managed to copy about 70-80% of Star Voyager-1's overall design plan.
By now, his computer document was completely filled with notes.
Next, he needed to organize this information into a somewhat presentable document.
"Structural system... hull design..."
"Using carbon fiber composite materials for lightweight, high-rigidity components like the fuselage framework to reduce weight while increasing strength..."
"Using aluminum alloy for fuel storage tanks, TC4 titanium alloy for high-temperature, high-pressure components..."
"Propulsion system... main engine using variable cycle engine or dual-mode air-space staged combustion cycle engine, model... no need to write the model number."
"Solid rocket boosters... continuing with Experiment-3's design approach, using recoverable booster rockets..."
"Thermal protection..."
"Navigation, guidance and control system..."
"Avionics and communications..."
"Life support..."
"Payload..."
Lin Xu methodically sorted through the Star Voyager-1 design plan he'd copied from Tianqiong Technology's exhibition hall twenty years in the future.
Admittedly, this thing was ridiculously complex.
Although he'd gained some knowledge about overall framework design since entering this industry, if he had to rely solely on himself, there's no way he could have produced something like this.
After all, no one was omnipotent.
He was very familiar with flight control and somewhat understood avionics communications, but when it came to rockets and engines, he was completely clueless.
Duh - these were two completely different fields!
Even within the same university, these two majors would be worlds apart.
Not just him - based on Lin Xu's knowledge, there wasn't a single person in all of human history who could simultaneously handle rocket engines and flight control.
To reach the level of a "chief designer," one needed access to massive resources, knowledge bases, and think tanks to support project design decisions.
Lin Xu obviously lacked such things.
But the bracelet was his knowledge base.
After another two-plus hours, Lin Xu had organized this design plan into something quite presentable.
Though to be honest, it was still far from being a true "first draft of the overall design plan," at least the framework was complete.
If he could find enough technical personnel to flesh out this framework, they might actually produce a complete plan in a short time.
Satisfied, Lin Xu looked at the plan on his computer screen, saved it with a quick keystroke, then casually opened the internal chat software and sent it to Jiang Xingye.
[File "Star Voyager-1 Design Plan First Draft" has been received]
The notification popped up, startling Lin Xu.
Still awake?
It was almost 8 o'clock.
What, had she pulled an all-nighter too, just like him?
He was about to send a concerned message when Jiang Xingye's reply came through first.
"???"
"You made this???"
"Yeah."
The moment Lin Xu sent those two words, Jiang Xingye immediately called.
"Wait, Lin Xu, are you serious? Where did you steal this from??"
"...Would you believe me if I said I stole it from NASA?"
Rubbing his throbbing temples, Lin Xu continued:
"So, is it usable?"
"I don't know."
Jiang Xingye clicked her tongue in amazement.
"This is still far from being a real overall design plan - for starters, there's no feasibility analysis."
"Second, the rocket's overall layout is too rough, and there are holes in the propulsion system design."
"A dual-mode air-space engine? Even if such a thing exists, we couldn't afford it."
"Then there's flight control and navigation - the technologies you listed aren't that easy to implement either..."
"Overall, this isn't an overall design plan."
"This is a 'collection of fragmented ideas.'"
"So it's useless then?"
Lin Xu sounded somewhat disappointed.
But the next second, Jiang Xingye said:
"On the contrary, it's extremely useful!"
"Rocket and spacecraft design processes are already quite mature these days. Creating an overall design plan isn't difficult for experienced engineers."
"But what they lack are ideas and approaches!"
"And what you've provided here happens to offer excellent approaches!"
"There are problems, sure, but problems can be solved!"
"Don't worry about it - I've already sent it to Chen Yan. He happens to be in a meeting with the boss and the chief designer right now. Let's see what they say!"
"...Alright."
Lin Xu flopped back onto his bed.
"Go ahead and send it then. I'm going to sleep now."
"Been up all night - I can't take it anymore."
"Right, let's sleep together."
Jiang Xingye yawned.
"...Could you not casually say such suggestive things? If I really come downstairs looking for you, you'll regret it."
"Regret your head!"
Jiang Xingye scoffed:
"If you're tired, drink some codonopsis and wolfberry tea. Isn't my cup still at your place?"
"Anyway, going to sleep now. Bye!"
The call ended. Lin Xu tossed his phone aside and closed his eyes.
Within seconds, he was completely asleep...
.......
Meanwhile, in Tianqiong Technology's chairman's office.
Chairman Ren Jian sat across from Experiment-3's chief designer Chu Xu, while Chen Yan, sitting in the corner, was presenting the results collected from the past two days of project kickoff meetings.
"...So synthesizing the employees' opinions and suggestions, we can preliminarily conclude that everyone is quite supportive of the 'space tourism' vision proposed by the chairman and chief designer."
"The general feedback is that this vision aligns with why people chose to work in civilian aerospace in the first place, and has reignited their passion for the work."
"Although there are still many technical challenges and difficulties, we all believe that given Tianqiong Technology's development speed, these issues will be resolved in the future."
"The project resistance has basically been eliminated. I believe the conditions for project launch are now mature."
As he finished speaking, the two leaders opposite him nodded simultaneously.
"That's excellent. Young people really do have drive."
Ren Jian turned to Chief Designer Chu Xu with a smile:
"Chu, if we were their age, would we have dared propose such ideas?"
"Space tourism... forget doing it, we wouldn't even have dreamed of it!"
"Times have changed."
Chu Xu spread his hands.
"These days, the difficulty of aerospace projects is about the same as when our country's first entrepreneurs were making domestic cars."
"Someone has to blaze this trail. Since we're the trailblazers, it's only right we take one more step forward."
"Absolutely."
Ren Jian nodded in agreement.
"Though it's a pity these young people didn't offer many concrete ideas."
"I was hoping this approach would guide their thinking so the project could proceed more smoothly later."
"But it seems that expectation wasn't quite met."
Chu Xu flicked his cigarette ash and added:
"Take it slow. Young people lack experience and have reservations. We..."
"Ding!"
Before he could finish, Chen Yan's computer emitted a notification sound.
All three turned their attention to it. Chen Yan awkwardly closed the pop-up window, explaining:
"A team member sent me a file..."
"I saw it."
Ren Jian suddenly looked interested.
"Star Voyager-1? That was the filename, right?"
"What is it? Open it up."
Chen Yan waved his hands dismissively:
"It's something a young guy from the project team put together. I'll have him revise it before showing you."
"Why wait? Let's see it now!"
As Ren Jian spoke, Chen Yan pretended to hesitate.
"It's just not mature enough yet. I'm afraid you..."
In reality, he was secretly delighted.
He'd seen Jiang Xingye's message - this was Lin Xu's so-called "plan."
Wow, just yesterday you made your bold promise, and today you deliver?
What good could possibly come from something thrown together overnight?
He actually couldn't wait to open the file for the boss - the less polished, the better.
The rougher it was, the more it would prove this young man was impulsive, giving him ample reason to remove him later.
----To be honest, he didn't really have anything against Lin Xu personally.
But he really didn't need a troublemaker in his project team.
Sorry, but you'll have to take the fall.
Seeing the chairman's slight frown, Chen Yan quickly opened the file Jiang Xingye had sent.
"I haven't actually reviewed this file myself yet, not sure if it's appropriate to show you..."
"Let's look together. It's the weekend - what's the harm?"
Ren Jian cut him off, and Chen Yan wisely fell silent.
The three quietly read through Lin Xu's proposal. At first, Ren Jian and Chu Xu chuckled and made a few joking comments, but as they continued, Chen Yan suddenly noticed something odd.
They'd both stopped talking.
In the spacious office, only one monotonous sound remained:
"Next page."
"Next page."
"Next."
Chen Yan's eyes widened.
He could tell these two senior leaders were genuinely engrossed.
What the hell?!
This thing was actually readable??
Well, even if it was all garbage, a dozen-page plan produced overnight was worth a look, right?
But... these two didn't seem to think it was garbage??
They finally reached the last page.
Ren Jian exhaled deeply and asked Chu Xu:
"Chu, what do you think?"
Chu Xu's eyes gleamed.
He said:
"It's rough. It's crude. Even a bit naive."
"But the thinking behind it, the ideas presented, and the sensitivity to new technologies... are truly remarkable!"
"What was this young man's name again? The document ID says Lin Xu?"
"Ren, set up a meeting. We should... meet with him?"
