Chapter 796: 29. The Beginning of Mutation
Lu Li had a sudden realization and swallowed the porridge without chewing.
"I remember there was no meat in the fridge."
"Hmm." Kong Nanqing nodded, staring unblinkingly.
Lu Li scooped a third spoonful, thinking it might be mouse meat grabbed from somewhere.
"But fortunately, you brought it back, so I made my best meat porridge."
The spoon paused mid-air: "I brought back?"
Lu Li seemed to understand something, his gaze shifted to the coffee table.
The jar on the coffee table was empty.
"..."
"Could this ornament be expensive...?"
Lu Li seemed to sigh almost imperceptibly: "Was it cooked thoroughly?"
"Yes, I boiled it for almost ten minutes." Kong Nanqing propped her chin with her hand, her elbow resting on the table as she nodded.
Unfortunately, her image was a charred humanoid figure, lacking any aesthetic appeal.
"That’s good then." To avoid waste, Lu Li sipped up the third spoonful of meat porridge, placed the empty spoon back into the porridge: "I’m not hungry for now."
Typically, cooked food means the genes are destroyed, so even if it’s a clump of cancer cells or diseased tissue, after being stir-fried, it can be eaten normally, though the taste is questionable.
Although the blood-colored tendrils are more bizarre than cancer cells, even if cooked and eaten it might not be harmless... But since it had already been made into food and eaten, worrying about anything else would only lead to self-conflict and be meaningless.
Speaking of which, this item is part of Richard Li’s plan. With one eaten by myself, he is probably jumping with rage right now.
...
Jiangling High School, at the gate.
Students wearing sailor uniform skirts and suit uniforms exuding youthful vibes gradually entered the school in the morning.
A van parked across the street from the high school started shaking strangely, drawing peculiar glances from the passing high school students.
"How could it?! How dare they?! They actually destroyed its tendrils!!!"
Richard Li jumped and shouted, crazily hopping inside the van filled with chaotic wires.
Monitors and various electronic devices occupied a large space in the van, as Richard Li vented his anger for a while, gradually calming down.
"Hmph hmph... This means the scarecrow effect worked. With so many scarecrows set up, even if someone is investigating, they would only be misled by illusions. Hmph hmph, finally able to officially prepare to start the revival plan."
He coldly laughed and adjusted the glasses on his nose, an eerie reflection flashed on the lenses.
"Ah ah ah ah ah so which bastard destroyed its tendrils!!!"
The van, having calmed down briefly, shook again.
...
"There’s still a lot of porridge left..." Kong Nanqing said hoarsely.
Lu Li was silent for a moment: "I... will put it in the fridge first, I want to go re—"
[Towards countless next stops——drawing a long straight line——]
The phone ringtone sounded, saving the situation.
"Then I’ll put it in the fridge, heat it up when hungry and it’ll be ready to eat." Kong Nanqing’s smile was increasing, she pursed her lips, her charred skin wrinkled, carried the bowl back to the kitchen.
Yang Chunxue, seeing no drama to watch, also saw Lu Li didn’t seem to be poisoned and dying, muttered things like "Your CS:GO emperor is back" and "Teaching you guys to behave" and slipped back into the bedroom.
"CS:GO, activate!"
Yang Chunxue’s crisp voice of joy came from the bedroom.
Thinking that she, already a vengeful spirit, might have a completely different gaming experience.
Whether good or bad, it’s hard to say.
[Drawing my——next destination——destination——Treasure Island, that’s Treasure Island. Resentment!]
Lu Li answered the phone, Officer Wen’s loud voice came through.
"Great detective, the laboratory arranged for you is ready, it’s my friend’s private lab, you can take your stuff for analy—"
"It’s no longer necessary." Lu Li interrupted him.
"What? I’ve already arranged it! This is outrageous, I promised him so many benefits and you’re just dismiss—"
"The item to be tested I’ve eaten." Lu Li interrupted him again.
"...?" Officer Wen was momentarily bewildered, then realized what Lu Li was talking about. "Then... can it be tested if vomited out?"
"Stir-fried and eaten."
"Tsk... good thing you’re a detective, if you were a police officer, the evidence room might not be enough for you to eat. I’ll talk to my friend and get the benefits back... hmm? Seems there’s some noise? I’ll go check it out..."
The phone call terminated amidst Officer Wen’s puzzled discovery.
Lu Li maintained his posture for a few seconds, quietly removed the phone, and placed it back on the table.
If there’s an anomaly, hope Officer Wen is safe. If there’s no anomaly, hope there is one.
With the key item eaten by himself, the investigation’s trail forcibly ended, and Lu Li’s fatigue surged over several days.
The nap in the eerie stairwell space didn’t relieve his exhaustion.
Lu Li removed his coat and hung it on the chair back, loosened his tie, and unbuttoned the top shirt button, preparing to rest.
As he prepared to nap on the desk, an image of the weird staircase inexplicably flashed through Lu Li’s mind.
Napping..... seems unhealthy.
Lu Li initially napped for maintaining a shallow sleep state during rest, waking at any signs of disturbance. Now with two vengeful spirits, the two peculiars at home——although they can only be mascots.
In such circumstances, napping seems unnecessary.
Lu Li stood up, moved the boss chair, and walked into the bedroom.
Yang Chunxue, deeply focused, hadn’t noticed an extra person in the bedroom, Lu Li went by the bedside.
The soft comfortable bedding swiftly dissolved Lu Li’s long-held vigilance, his consciousness descended into chaos and fell into deep sleep.
This sleep wasn’t comfortable and sweet.
Long hours of sitting posture sleep made Lu Li accustomed to such rest. The abrupt change meant a very light sleep, at all times alert to surroundings.
For instance, Yang Chunxue berating teammates and the sudden collapse of the mattress beside him.
Blurred black eyes opened, a face up close grew clear, appearing fierce due to being scorched black.
"You awake?"
Side-lying next to him, Kong Nanqing lowered her voice, her tone seemed gentle. The breath full of burnt scent embraced Lu Li’s cheek.
"Mm." Lu Li shifted his gaze, fell on Yang Chunxue, back turned to the bed.
That silly girl leaned closer to the screen, still unaware her boss was slept next to by Kong Nanqing.
Her eyes were blood red, with tiny blood veins wandering——actually driven into vengeful spirit state due to gaming.
Shifted his gaze, his vision fell further outside the window, adjusting his view.
The black eyes gradually contracted, became fixed.
An indescribable strange scene was appearing in the sky.
Hazy fog spread over Lingling City, amidst the fog, blood-colored threads were semi-visible.
They were both ephemeral and real, exceedingly long, linking sky and earth. The upper end hidden within clouds, no idea where it led. The lower end snaked downwards, reaching towards the horizon.
These blood-colored threads scattered into Lingling City, seemed to sway with the wind, some extending downwards then fixing, some slowly wandering.
"What is... that?"
