Chapter 672 - 672 One hundred ninety-one

672: One hundred ninety-one.

The place where they are buried 672: One hundred ninety-one.

The place where they are buried “Did they really leave?”

The City Lord’s Assistant frequently looked back, unable to believe what had happened to him.

I was targeted by Sara and Adam but escaped unscathed…?

“Yes.”

It seemed Adam was still on their side, so next, he would lead Sara away, giving Lu Li and Anna enough time to find the true location of the Flarend Sanatorium.

The City Lord’s Assistant regretted that he could not share this encounter with others—it had too many secrets that should not be known to others, like the fact that Lu Li, Anna, and Sara Adam were “friends,” and also Anna’s identity.

Perhaps he could talk about it after it was all over, provided he was still alive then.

They returned to the City Hall, and the people in the square in front looked at Lu Li and Anna with the same awe; they already knew that these two were responsible for the spectacular scene earlier.

Walking up the stone steps into City Hall, the City Lord Valenteel raised his head, “You are more capable than I imagined, which has solidified my decision.”

“Here is the evacuation plan, please take a look.”

Valenteel pushed a few pieces of parchment towards Lu Li, who was approaching.

Lu Li picked them up.

Explore the secret passage as soon as possible, then establish a safe zone at the other end, and evacuate the citizens of Flarend City.

The residents in the safe zone would be the first to enter the secret passage, while those rescued from the infected area would be arranged in the safe zone to avoid chaos.

The secret passage leading outside the city was the core of the evacuation plan.

Before implementing the plan, they first had to ensure that the passage itself was safe to traverse.

“What can we do?” Lu Li put down the parchment.

Valenteel, apologetic, said, “We nearly need everything…

There are still many citizens in the infected zone, we are short on manpower and protective suits, only your abilities can contain them.

There’s also exploring the secret passage; Dandelions might have penetrated inside, and we don’t have enough resources or time to burn the entire passage once, so we need your help with that too.”

“Anna’s ability is only to disperse Dandelions, not to find and eliminate them, the second thing we can’t do,” Lu Li replied.

Valenteel, somewhat regretful, said, “Then please rest for a bit first, we’ll need your help to rescue the citizens of Rend City after the exploration of the passage.”

Lu Li did not refuse; he indeed needed a quiet room to rest, while waiting for Sara Adam to be far enough from them.

A servant led Lu Li and Anna to the guest room on the second floor of the City Hall and brought them two steak salads and red wines.

Apart from the red wine, both steak and salads were consumed by Lu Li.

Anna turned off the electric light, and in the chilling dimness, she silently guarded Lu Li, who slipped away from this land and entered a worry-free dream.

At noon, the unusually vast group of Dandelions still enveloped the land.

The quiet guest room endured, only to be disturbed by a knock on the door.

Anna, donning a robe, opened the door.

She thought the exploration of the passage was completed, but it was another matter—the City Lord’s Assistant brought an elderly man, claiming he knew the story of the Flarend Sanatorium.

“Let’s talk outside.” Anna didn’t want to disturb the sleeping Lu Li, but at that moment, a gentle voice came from behind, as Lu Li had just woken up.

“Let him in,” said the voice.

The old man with prominent age spots on his face sat by the fireplace, the City Lord’s Assistant standing behind him with his hands tied.

Lu Li sat on the other side, the fire casting a red glow on half of his face.

“Little Dom told me you wanted to know the story of the Sanatorium,” the old man said slowly, the assistant behind him showing an embarrassed smile at the mention of the name.

“Yes,” Lu Li replied.

“Can you tell me why?” the old man asked, lifting his heavy eyelids as if hiding a secret.

“Some personal matters.” Lu Li couldn’t tell him about Sara and Adam.

“I see…

You must be here for ‘that’ incident, right?” the old man’s murky eyes held a mixture of longing and reminiscence, glowing bright once again in the firelight.

“They indeed were a pair of enviable lovers…”

Lu Li and Anna thought the old man would continue with Sara and Adam’s story — unexpectedly, he began to tell a different story: a tale of love and hatred between a young man and a noble mistress.

Lu Li did not want to waste ten minutes or even longer listening to the old man slowly narrate irrelevant details: “There is a graveyard there, right?”

“It seems you know more than I do…

Yes, there is a graveyard there, belonging only to the two of them,” the old man did not realize they were discussing two entirely different stories.

Returning to the core of the story, the old man spoke of how a young man fell in love with a noble mistress at a ball; a young girl who, for her family’s sake, had no choice but to sell herself.

Gradually, they fell in love, but the nobility became aware of it.

Unable to publicly disgrace himself, the noble took another approach to revenge — when the young man secretly slipped into the estate to meet with the mistress, the noble framed him as a thief and in front of the mistress, pulled her jewelry from the young man’s pocket.

The young man was beaten brutally by the noble and his men and thrown into the Police Station.

The noble then pressured the councilors and the Police Station to escalate his punishment to hanging.

The mistress indeed misunderstood the young man at first, but on the day of the hanging, she overhearing a conversation about the noble’s conspiracy by a maid sweeping the floor.

Mad with realization, she ran to the execution ground.

She arrived too late.

By the time she got there, her beloved was already motionless, hanging from the noose.

Overcome with grief, the mistress accused the noble of his conspiracy and abuse in front of countless citizens, then crashed into the hanging platform, dying at the young man’s feet.

This scandal was not enough to overthrow a noble but was sufficient to make him ostracized by the public and ridiculed by the other nobles.

At that time, the owner of Valrend Sanatorium, a political enemy of that noble, gladly announced that he would bury the lovers in the garden of the Sanatorium and allow people to visit them —

The disgraced noble took this shame to his grave, and as time passed, the love story, initially fabricated to strike at a political rival, gradually faded with time, failing to be remembered.

Sara might have known about this as she admired and respected their love story, so she chose to rest her bones there — but from the actual cruel and arbitrary acts Sara had committed, it seemed more likely that she had exhumed their bones and buried her own beneath them, basking in the admiration and worship of the young lovers —

Still with a sigh of emotion, the old man was helped away by the City Lord’s Assistant Dom.

Anna closed the door and walked back to the fireplace, asking Lu Li, “Do we know where the real body is now?

Shall we go now?”

“What time is it?” Lu Li asked.

“It’s twenty past twelve,” she replied.

“Let’s wait a bit longer.”

It had been less than three hours since Adam and Sara had left, it was better to wait until they were further away —

Lu Li still felt fatigued, but it wasn’t time for his second rest.

Dom rushed over in a panic, informing them that there had been an accident in the tunnel, a mysterious presence enveloping its middle section.
