Detective Agency of the Bizarre -
Chapter 627 - 627 146
627: 146.
The Controlled Source 627: 146.
The Controlled Source “Ah!!!”
The scream tore through the night sky as the woman, hiding behind the officer and her husband, suddenly recognized what the dark, shriveled thing on the ground was—just hours ago she had touched Little Andy’s head, screaming as she grabbed her husband and ran out of the house!
The dandelions that had been drifting around and those in the fields stirred as if sensing an invader, carried by the airflow towards the door.
In the eyes of the officer, a terrifying and ghostly claw reached out for him.
The lightly grazing claw tips turned into a stinging pain the moment they touched his face.
The cluster of dandelions landed on his exposed skin, the intense pain waking him up as he turned to flee out the door!
“Quick—”
The officer’s shout became muffled, feeling as if countless entities within him were draining his vitality, his throat blocked by something, coughing up clumps of dandelions that terrified him.
The last thing he saw was the expressions of passersby turning from astonishment to horror—
Thud.
The officer collapsed at the doorway, his body visibly shrinking rapidly, an oil lamp overturned on the ground.
The white dandelions burrowed out from his skin and clothes, thriving on the corpse as nutrients, then drifting leisurely, drawn by the screams and movement of people.
They landed on the people in motion.
Some fortunate ones landed on their skin, burrowing underneath like living things, then started undulating peculiarly.
Seconds later, the running people stumbled as countless “dandelions” sprouted from their bodies, their life force waning as they fell, a new patch of dandelions rising—
Panic and turmoil were rapidly spreading.
“Anna.”
Lu Li, sitting in a wheelchair, turned his head to speak.
Anna understood, a chilly aura seeping from her cloak and wrapping around Lu Li as she walked towards the source of the danger against the fleeing crowd.
A woman stumbled and fell near Anna, her beautiful face now filled with terror, reaching out to Anna for help in a hair-raising scene.
Countless roots burrowed out from the pores of her arms, growing swiftly on her flesh and blood, blooming a terrifying yet beautiful field of white dandelions.
Anna furrowed her brows and backed away, but the dandelions on the corpse were stirred by the airflow caused by her cloak and drifted towards her.
Whoo—
Anna generated a gust, dispelling the disgusting entities that floated towards her, retreating back to the unmoving Lu Li, like a rock in a river.
“It’s the dandelions, they’re absorbing people’s flesh and blood to grow…
but I can’t sense any bizarre aura.”
Indeed, the anomaly was as ordinary as mundane things—that was why this bizarre invasion went unnoticed until it erupted.
Lu Li quietly observed as the fragmented dandelions, stirred by the breeze and the airflow from the running crowd, chased after slow-moving elderly people and those burdened with heavy luggage.
Once they took root in someone’s skin, that person would rapidly lose vitality within seconds, then transform into a new “dandelion field.”
What was worse, some of the dandelions landed on the clothes of people attempting to escape.
Unable to take root, they were carried to other places…
Luckily, it had rained during the day, making it difficult for the dandelions to fly very high.
“They fear fire…” Lu Li murmured.
The overturned oil lamp ignited the debris, the dandelions near the flame either silently melted away or were swept away by the airflow.
Suddenly, Lu Li hurled the oil lamp at a nearby wooden hut.
Crack!
The shattered kerosene lamp fell to the ground, spilling the fuel irregularly on the wall of the wooden hut.
Lu Li struck a match and threw it towards the wall.
The burning match traced an arc and struck the kerosene-soaked wooden wall, spreading a blue flame.
The flame turned from blue to pale yellow, and thick smoke seeped through the gaps in the wooden planks into the house.
Soon, the door opened, and a middle-aged man coughed as he ran out of the cabin.
“Claim your losses from the United Organization of Exorcists, now stay away from here, there are anomalies ahead,” Lu Li said to the bewildered man.
The man stood frozen, suddenly awakened by the cool, moist air, hearing screams and cries echoing through the night sky; grabbing his wife and children, he fled in panic, not even bothering to take his finances.
The entire wall blazed fiercely, flames licked at Lu Li’s face, and the blast lifted the hem of his clothes and the tips of his hair.
Lu Li looked back toward the street ahead; it was deserted, with only a dozen shriveled corpses and Dandelions wandering the street telling what had just happened.
He hoped not many Dandelions had been taken out.
Lu Li thought.
Though just one Dandelion was enough to cause great trouble…
“Anna, stir up the air currents and drive them into the flames,” Lu Li said.
“I’ll try,” Anna replied.
She had never tried to exert her powers on such a large scale before.
On the cool night, a faint whirlwind emerged in the deserted streets and spread out.
The remaining Dandelions on the street witnessed this scene; attracted by the air currents, those wandering the street, those still in the Dandelion fields, or following fleeing people, were all caught by the gradually intensifying whirlwind.
The whirlwind, like a vortex on the sea, absorbed everything around it, trapping torn newspapers and trash in a tornado with a ten-meter diameter, from which nothing could escape.
It was strong enough to pick up anything light.
If it were stronger, it could perhaps be called a tornado.
Anna’s cloak billowed, her breath unreservedly spreading out, deliberately avoiding Lu Li as she drew the whirlwind sweeping across the street closer to the completely ablaze cabin.
Whoosh!
The sudden expansion of firelight reddened Lu Li’s face, flames quickly spread into the wind, tinting everything, burning everything, forming a magnificent fire tornado.
People hiding far away or inside buildings and peering at this scene cried out and backed away, but the nearby Lu Li was protected by Anna, preventing even a hair from being tousled.
His black eyes reflected the beautiful columns of fire.
Seconds later, Anna ceased wielding the power of the whirlwind.
The spinning flames dispersed, the burning ashes exploded, and amidst distant cries, the ashes transformed into dim stars scattered across half the street.
Lu Li and Anna looked up at this magnificent scene, as if the vast starry sky were embracing them.
…
Two minutes later, Lu Li and Anna, staying in their original places, awaited the arrival of the response team from the United Organization of Exorcists.
Night guards sectioned off the area, investigators donned protective suits to enter the anomaly-infested streets for investigations, and Alliance Personnel handled the aftermath: crowd control and preventing the fire from spreading further.
On their way here, they had already been briefed about the anomaly event.
“As a precaution, you would be wise to burn down this section of houses,”
Lu Li told the Exorcists.
“They fear flames.
Dandelions will drift with the wind and also cling to clothes.
Therefore, isolate all surrounding residents, take off their clothes, and burn them collectively.”
The person in charge of handling this incident approached Lu Li and answered solemnly, “We will take your advice into consideration, and would also note your efforts to prevent the anomaly.”
A few United Personnel checked Lu Li’s condition, confirmed he was unharmed, and then allowed Lu Li and Anna to leave the barricaded area.
