Detective Agency of the Bizarre
Chapter 616 - 616 One hundred thirty-five

616: One hundred thirty-five.

No discussion of morality, no discussion of right and wrong 616: One hundred thirty-five.

No discussion of morality, no discussion of right and wrong Plorin District.

This area was separated from the slum by just one street, and the people coming and going were no longer gentlemen and ladies but plainly dressed commoners and the poor.

The carriage stopped at the front of the district, and hungry people’s greedy eyes fell upon the carriage and some of them stared at Lu Li who had alighted.

Anna pushed Lu Li to the door, knocked on it, and then stood silently behind him.

Staggering footsteps sounded from behind the door, followed by an old voice asking, “Who is it?”

“Investigator Lu Li, the Marsh…

Princess Roland sent me here.”

There was a moment’s pause behind the door, a click, and the wooden door opened a crack, an old face appeared behind the gap, sizing up Lu Li warily, “Princess Roland?”

“Yes.”

“Ordinary people wouldn’t know about my bloodline…” Lily mumbled to herself, stepping back to open the door wider.

“Whoever you are…

come in, young man, I hope you mean no harm.”

The wheelchair surprisingly couldn’t pass through the narrow wooden door, so Lu Li had to leave the wheelchair, with the old woman watching curiously as he approached the dilapidated wooden hut.

Anna, the last to enter, wanted to close the door when Lily whispered a reminder, “The public safety here isn’t very good, and the prices of food are becoming more expensive.”

Pausing slightly, Anna no longer tried to close the door, keeping it open enough to see the carriage outside.

A wise old woman, should a stranger harbor ill intent, her shouts would be enough to be heard by the residents outside.

“Speak, then.

What is your purpose in seeking me out?

Look at where I live, our family has nothing left,” the old woman asked defensively.

Anna looked around the simply furnished room.

The only thing that made her pause was the photo frame on the dining table.

Inside was a beautiful young woman.

Was this what the Mother of the Marsh looked like?

Anna wondered, having never seen the Mother of the Marsh before.

“As I said, Princess Roland sent me here,” Lu Li repeated.

Upon hearing the title a second time, Lady Lily’s face showed a hint of reminiscence, her guard dropping slightly, “Did you receive an heirloom from the princess?”

“No, it was Princess Roland herself, to some extent.”

Lily, who had assumed Lu Li had come for the family fortune, was taken aback by the unexpected answer, suddenly recalling Lu Li’s initial introduction.

“You are an Exorcist…

So her spirit still exists in this world?!”

The old woman’s expression grew excited, even drawing curious looks from passersby in the street.

“More or less,” Lu Li did not elaborate on the bizarre circumstances, continuing, “Due to some reasons, she has lost most of her memories, and I’m responsible for helping her reclaim them, so I found you.

Do you still have the old records?”

“Of course…

of course…

we never forgot the old glory of the Toyaragon…”

Tears welled up in Lily’s clouded eyes: “Can you take me to see her…”

“I’m afraid I can’t,” Lu Li shook his head, “She is on the Marsh Road, and both the place and she are very dangerous.”

Unless the old woman was willing to become a Follower of the Mother of the Marsh, but she might not be willing to do so.

How would the Mother of the Marsh, who now possessed a semblance of humanity, turn her last bloodline into a strange creature.

“I’m not afraid of danger, my family has already lost everything, I just hope I can serve the former princess…” Lily’s mournful plea was hard to refuse.

Lu Li didn’t answer, instead glancing at Anna.

“Bringing one more person won’t slow us down,” Anna said.

Lu Li nodded slightly and said to Lily, “We are here for the Exorcists’ Council the day after tomorrow.

After it ends, we will take you away.

If she does not allow you to stay in her territory or you are not fit to remain there, I will take you to Himfast.”

“Thank you, please wait a moment.”

Having sensed Lu Li’s intention to leave, Lilia called out to him, dragging a patch-covered suitcase from under the bed and handing him several books.

“These contain the heritage of our family.

I feel more at ease with them in your hands,” the old woman had come to trust Lu Li unconditionally.

After all, no one would deceive a penniless old woman.

“Is it not safe here?” Lu Li discerned the underlying implication in Lilia’s words.

As he spoke, the sudden sound of horses came from outside the cabin.

A few hooligans gathered in front of the carriage, trying to lead it away.

“I’ll handle this,” Anna headed outside.

The old woman did not hide the truth, “For some reason, the royal family’s control over the city is weakening.

The Hales Gang from the slums has recently taken an interest in this district.

They could occupy it at any moment…”

“Those people outside must be them.

Go quickly and help your friend.

The Hales Gang is as troublesome as hyenas.

Your identity might drive them away…”

In order to stabilize and observe the official stance, the gang might not force the residents here, except for the lonely old people.

Helpless and sick, they are prime targets for bullying.

Soon, the only food and belongings Lilia had would be taken away, and she would die helplessly, extinguishing the last faint glimmer of the Toyaragon family.

“Pack your bags, we’ll take you to an inn.”

Lu Li said, walking towards the door.

Anna, unable to exert her power conveniently, patiently gave a cold warning, then, supporting Lu Li who walked onto the street, said, “They claim to be from the Hales Gang.”

“We want your—”

A shout came from one of the thugs, but the bandana-wearing leader stopped him.

He recognized the strange badge on Lu Li’s coat, “Are you an Exorcist?”

“Yes.”

The leader apologized without hesitation, “I’m truly sorry, Mr.

Exorcist.

We didn’t mean any harm; we are leaving immediately—”

As he spoke, a sudden surge of air struck towards the figure who had sneaked to the side of the carriage trying to stealthily take the reins.

With a scream, the figure flew backwards, slamming into the wall across the street.

The startled horses were about to bolt, but were forcibly subdued by an irresistible force, rendered immobile.

The street was silent for a moment, then erupted in screams.

The people shouted about a monster and scattered in all directions, spreading chaos rapidly.

In the slightly cold temperature, the leader actually showed a sweat on his forehead, quietly backing away, and when far enough, he and his men hurriedly fled.

Anna’s cloak slowly fluttered down, her low voice filled with apologies, “I’m sorry, I…”

“The problem isn’t with us,” Lu Li said unconcernedly as he slowly approached the thug who tried to steal the horse.

Clutching his chest, the thug crawled fearfully on the ground, trying to get away from Lu Li.

At that moment, a Shilling fell on him, pausing his movement.

“Get some medical attention, then think about what the meaning of your actions is,” Lu Li said calmly, looking down at the young man before turning away.

“We just want to survive!”

Suddenly, a hoarse shout came from behind him, followed by a sound as if something had broken.

Talking about morals to the underprivileged is senseless, a contemplation only the well-fed and worry-free indulge in.

That’s why Lu Li decided not to preach to someone who wouldn’t understand.

He and Lilia got into the carriage and slowly left the street.

Only a calm voice echoed in the young man’s ears.

“The people you harm are the same.”
