Detective Agency of the Bizarre -
Chapter 594 - 594 113
594: 113.
Gaze of the Evil God 594: 113.
Gaze of the Evil God A minute later, the merchant left the cliff top.
“Why didn’t we buy more canned goods?” Raimy asked, she and her brother had no memory of Lu Li asking.
“This world might not last that long,” Lu Li’s consciousness detached from that paradoxical question, he replied.
The world itself would not be destroyed; it would only be assimilated into a paradise for monsters due to its contamination with a strange aura.
It merely shifted from one attribute to another.
It was the humans living in this world who would suffer the catastrophe.
“We will protect you.” Lying weak in the chair beside her, Jimmy, who had been quietly listening, suddenly spoke, and Raimy nodded in agreement.
For Lu Li, helping them escape the shackles of the Malevolent Spirit book was a casual act.
But for them, escaping the monotonous pages to become truly living beings gifted them with gratitude enough to give their all.
“Thank you.”
Despite being inappropriate, during these days close to the apocalypse, Lu Li, for the first time, genuinely found himself free from planning, scheming, and potentially running around everywhere.
As companions they were to live with for a significantly long time, Lu Li thoroughly inquired about the Jimmy Siblings’ abilities.
Raimy was a ghost, before being transformed into a servant of the Evil God.
Now she is still a soul, but cannot be categorized under the Malevolent Spirit System.
The Evil God was dead, and as a servant, she should have followed her master at the moment the Evil God dispersed.
However, in the Malevolent Spirit book, the story is the only rule, nothing can break it.
Thus, in the perfect ending woven by Lu Li, she survived to the end and appeared in reality in a form that defied the “Four Major Systems” organized by the Demon Slayer.
Having escaped the Evil God System, she was more like an Evil Spirit.
She wouldn’t be contaminated by the aura of the Inner World like souls in the Malevolent Spirit System, nor would she be controlled by a Superior like servants in the Evil God System, nor was she like the bizarre and indescribable monsters in the System of Abnormalities.
Her power was the ability inherited from the “Scholar” servant of the Evil God: the Banshee’s Howl.
Raimy longed for a peaceful life, so she had no opportunity to use this ability.
Her only understanding of her powers came from memory fragments received during the inheritance: Banshee’s Howl didn’t differentiate between friend and foe, attacking all beings within a dozen meters.
Weaker beings would have their bodies shattered, whether tangible or ethereal.
The stronger the enemy, the weaker the effect, only causing brief dizziness or no reaction at all.
As her brother, Jimmy had it worse.
His monster body was just the Evil God’s lowest rank of servants, far inferior to the middle rank “Scholar.” He had no special abilities, just a body that could bully beasts.
Moreover, because he hadn’t fully transformed into a servant, he still had to bear the burden of his human body, suffering daily from the pain caused by the conflict between the two bodies.
They had thought about cutting off the merged part, then either fully becoming a monster or returning to human form, but the Jimmy Siblings never dared to do so.
Because it was possible that both beings couldn’t survive and would simply die.
Hence, Jimmy was temporarily caught between being an Evil Spirit and a Monster—if he truly managed to discard one of the bodies, he would directly become an existence from another system.
“It’s a pity we’re still too weak,” Raimy said guiltily.
“That’s not important,” Lu Li replied.
Monsters could never be divided into strong and weak, except those indescribable entities.
Most malevolent spirits that humans extremely feared, capable of easily wiping out a town, might not even harm a monster.
They only harbored overt malice towards humans.
In the following period, Raimy talked with Lu Li about some observations they made on the way to Belfast.
When the topic reached the weirdness of Insmouth Town, Lu Li shared his odd experiences with the monsters he encountered on the train with Raimy.
As a “Scholar,” perhaps she would know something.
“You’re saying the townspeople changed because of you?”
Lu Li nodded, “They were all watching me as they approached.”
“Sounds like their minds and bodies were controlled…
some Evil Gods can do that.
Did you offend an Evil God, or are you carrying something that interests it?”
The beautiful face of the Mother of the Marsh surfaced in front of him, Lu Li lowered his head, looking at a segment of a blazing red bracelet showing beneath the sleeve of his wrist.
In a daze, this scene overlapped with a pale wrist extending out from the swamp.
He shook his head gently, “It shouldn’t be the former.”
At that time, the Mother of the Marsh had just escaped the trouble from the Old Mother; it was improbable for her to disturb a seaside town two hundred miles away.
“So it’s the latter then?”
Lu Li continued shaking his head, as he didn’t carry anything special on him.
“I can sense the presence of other Evil Gods if you’ve been marked by one.
But to do so, I need to touch your forehead.
May I?” Raimy asked.
“Of course.”
Excitement flickered deep within Raimy’s eyes, seemingly spurred by Lu Li’s trust.
She lifted her arm, much firmer than Anna’s, as a complex, unusual aura swirled around her.
Her presence was distinctly different from Anna’s, which was dark and evil, with an Inner World aura that seemed capable of devouring everything in this world.
Raimy resembled the strange young spirit with the large umbrella that Lu Li had encountered a long time ago.
With a cool, pale palm, Raimy touched Lu Li’s forehead, closed her eyes, and dove deep into her spiritual body, sensing carefully.
“Vibrant vitality and soul…
here…
no malice…
it observes…
feels…
no…
understands…”
Dozens of seconds later, Raimy slowly opened her eyes and withdrew her arm, “There’s indeed an aura of an Evil God on you.”
As she spoke, confusion crossed Raimy’s face, “But it’s odd, it bears no malice or evil thoughts, just entwines around your body, doing nothing.
That’s why Miss Anna couldn’t detect it.”
Lu Li asked, “What’s its purpose?”
“That’s the question,” Raimy thought maybe there was an issue with the “Scholar’s” legacy.
According to the inherited memories, all Evil God’s auras intend to delude, entice, mark, or curse.
“It serves no purpose; it just stays on you.
Just like…
a strand of hair.”
Lu Li guessed who might have left it.
After all, the only Evil God he had encountered was from the Shadow Swamp.
“The aura is very weak; I can help you expel it if you need?” Raimy asked.
“Let’s keep it.”
Several minutes later, Anna returned.
Anna didn’t find the wheelchair Lu Li needed, but she brought back many fresh groceries and two boxes of dusty canned foods—it looked like she had raided a restaurant.
“From now on, leave half the canned food you find,” Lu Li said.
“Why?”
With eyes slightly downcast, he informed Anna about the sale of the canned goods at the merchant’s: “Many people need it more than we do.”
“As you wish,” Anna said, looking tenderly at Lu Li.
Raimy could hardly believe that the gentle Anna now was the same person as the cold-hearted one from last night.
Remembering something, Anna said earnestly to Lu Li, “I saw those children…”
“Are they still alive?”
After a brief silence, Anna spoke, “In another way.”
