Chapter 526 - 526 Forty-five
526: Forty-five.
The fourth believer 526: Forty-five.
The fourth believer The curtains fell within the church.
Lu Lili took a deep breath, left her seat with the oil lamp in hand, and turned to face the tightly shut wooden door.
The state of the pathway would reveal the “girl’s” ultimate fate.
She pulled open the door, and everything appeared before Lu Li’s eyes.
The fragmentary walls struggled to hold together, and through the floating rubble, the maddeningly dark abyss was laid bare before Lu Li without any reservation.
The way back had been completely cut off; there was no possibility of return.
The uneven stone steps were hard to navigate, and Lu Li had to avoid the parts that revealed the abyss, moving down on the still intact steps with a calm expression, as if the surging darkness outside the broken pathway had nothing to do with her.
On the fourth floor, that unchanged carved wooden door appeared.
Crossing the missing steps, Lu Li opened the door and stepped into the Confessional.
The wooden door closed behind her, and the light and organ music dispersed the deathly stillness and oppression from the corridor.
[The prey that steps into a trap is like a frog in warming water.
By the time danger arrives, it’s already too late to escape.]
The advice carved on the lattice wooden wall seemed to narrate Lu Li’s current situation.
In silence, Lu Li took a seat on the wooden chair, waiting for the fourth Believer to appear.
The hazy light that seeped into the church was bright and strong, suggesting it was perhaps approaching noon.
A figure appeared outside the church door, heading towards the Confessional.
“Lord…
please save your lost lamb and tell me how to redeem my brother who is falling into hell…”
The shadow began to recount a story.
Jonah Peters and Ole Peters were once brothers who were commendable.
They loved and helped each other and were well-known to many because of their identical twin appearances.
In front of the church Confessional was the older brother, Jonah Peters, who had been born a few minutes before Ole Peters.
Though it was only a few minutes, Jonah Peters still took on the responsibilities of an older brother, looking after his younger sibling.
Ole Peters exhibited extraordinary cleverness from a young age, but it was a cleverness unlike what others imagined—it was an aptitude for crime.
Jonah discovered that when Ole was very young, he would kill insects in various ways and giggle, as he got a little older, the victims of his cruelty evolved from insects to small animals.
Jonah intended to change his brother’s ways, but to no avail.
He could only help Ole hide these devil-like acts, hoping that Ole wouldn’t go any further.
But the worst still happened.
One night, with his hands covered in blood, an excited Ole rushed back home.
Jonah found no animal hair on his brother, and the smell of the blood was not as strong as that from an animal.
Jonah realized something, and under his questioning, Ole revealed everything: he had killed a little girl who had lost her way.
Ole was falling into hell.
Jonah sternly reprimanded Ole, but it was of no use.
Ole, seduced by the devil with no remorse, cleverly committed another murder, killing a woman a few days later.
Jonah wanted to report the crime to the Police Station, but his brother’s pleas made him soft-hearted.
At the same time, he heard that a bloody murderer called the Gut Cutter had appeared in the city.
The Gut Cutter would kill people who walked at night and sever their intestines to strangle them with.
The police were tracking this vicious killer, planning to execute him by hanging.
Despite knowing the depth of Ole’s sins, Jonah didn’t want his brother to die.
So, he agreed to help Ole keep the secret, in exchange for his brother’s promise to stop.
But just last night, as he got up to relieve himself, he found that his brother was not in the room, and he didn’t return until the next morning.
Meanwhile, the neighbors were all spreading rumors that the police had found the Gut Cutter and were pursuing him.
Jonah knew that Ole had once again succumbed to his nature.
So a pained and helpless Jonah came to the church, hoping the priest in the Confessional could tell him what to do next.
Having had the experience of the previous three tiers, Lu Li was somewhat experienced in how to play a clergyman.
[The way to redemption is not in indulgence]
As Jonah Peters held the silent paper, Lu Li passed over a second sheet: [True redemption is to stop him from making a mistake, to prevent him from killing more innocent people before he does so.
Those people die because of him, and because of you]
“I…
yes…
of course…
if I had stopped him earlier…” Jonah Peters murmured, lowering his head.
“Please tell me what I can do to atone…”
Before Jonah Peters spoke, Lu Li had already picked up the quill and written his message.
Olivia, Green, the unidentified girl, and the priest.
Though it might be a long shot, Lu Li still intended to try changing their fates.
After writing about their situations, Lu Li told Jonah Peters: [Appear in my name.
They may come to help you, or may need your help.
Together with them, resolve the troubles you encounter and redeem yourselves]
Jonah Peters left with the notes given by Lu Li.
Based on Lu Li’s understanding of the trial, it was difficult for Jonah to save his brother or those people.
But one must still try.
The story didn’t end there; a few minutes after Jonah Peters had left, a figure slowly approached the Confessional.
Looking at the vague figure, Lu Li understood and wrote down his message.
[I foresee your failure: Olivia trampled to death under hoofs, the crying girl comes to the church at dusk, and you are captured by Viscount Rivis and thrown into his private prison]
The priest, holding the piece of paper, was silent.
If time is continuous, and Lu Li can alter any point, then naturally the priest from noon of this tier would have experienced everything that happened in the morning of the previous tier after Lu Li had informed him.
The contingency plan left by Lu Li took effect.
[Tell me your original plan]
Lu Li wrote.
After a slight pause, the priest, with respect, slowly told Lu Li his intentions: to speak with Viscount Rivis, find Olivia, and as a representative of the church, take responsibility for the medical expenses for her child.
To find Green and his daughter, to tell them about the impending events, and to have them stay at home.
But the outcome was already known to Lu Li from the Nun’s account on the previous tier: the priest was captured by Viscount Rivis from the start, and everything else proceeded along its original course.
[Do not go to see Viscount Rivis…
bring Olivia and her child, Green and his daughter to the church.
Have them stay there, and only let them go back home when it gets dark]
[The girl who left the church in the morning couldn’t escape the clutches of the evil men.
Find her, or them.
Bring the girl back, send them to their death]
[The Gut Cutter is named Ole Peters, the younger twin of Jonah Peters.
Inform the Police Station of this news]
Lu Li wrote much, thankfully the form of written words did not test the priest’s memory.
He bowed slightly, carrying the “divine” will out of the church, to exercise the “divine” right.
