Chapter 385 - 385 Two hundred and forty-two
385: Two hundred and forty-two.
She gave too much money.
385: Two hundred and forty-two.
She gave too much money.
This matter is coincidental, just like a conspiracy.
“I joined half a month ago,” Lu Li answered briefly.
Petra was also a Regular Investigator, but he had been an investigator for over two years, which far exceeded the experience of Lu Li.
In other words, within the investigators, a higher rank could represent capability, and so could a longer tenure—this meant they had lived for quite a while.
Petra suddenly nodded in realization, “Don’t worry, The Shadow of Puppetry is easy to deal with, and if you don’t mind, we can form a team and solve this Evil Spirit Ritual together.”
However, at this moment, what Lu Li was concerned about was something else, “Did you come here to investigate the evil spirit incident?”
“Of course not.
The investigators didn’t issue this incident,” Petra shrugged his shoulders.
“I was just traveling here and happened to hear that a Baron was hiring an Exorcist, so I came over to see what the fuss was about.”
Investigators were full of a desire to explore, like moths to a flame.
“What about the Night Watch?”
“Are you asking if they have been assigned a task?
Of course not, otherwise you would have already seen that group of stern-faced fellows sealing off this area,” Petra replied.
Having received an answer, Lu Li fell silent.
The incident of Baron Joseph being attacked by an evil spirit was inexplicably unsettling.
It wasn’t the incident itself that was disturbing, but the fact that both major organizations seemed to be ignoring this evil spirit.
Looking on the bright side, perhaps they believed that the evil spirit was something the Baron could deal with himself, and so they chose not to intervene.
On the dark side, it could mean… the two large organizations were already too preoccupied to handle an evil spirit appearing within Belfast.
Based on Lu Li’s understanding of them, the likelihood of the former was minuscule.
“Excuse me for a moment.”
Lu Li stood up and said.
Pushing open the door of the guest room under Petra’s watchful gaze, he walked into the hall.
In the middle of the hall, a robust man was smearing animal fat on his muscular upper body.
Baron Joseph sprawled lazily on the sofa, watching the performance with boredom.
The noise from the doorway caught her attention, and then, sitting up excitedly, she waved her hand and instructed the butler, “Give a tip, and send this circus performer out just like his colleagues.”
Ignoring the stunned Exorcist, Baron Joseph’s gaze turned fiery as she watched Lu Li approach the sofa.
“I want to resign,” Lu Li stated.
Lu Li’s words made all of Baron Joseph’s good mood vanish in an instant, she frowned and refused, “No, you must stay!”
As her words fell, a chilling, hair-raising aura burst forth around Lu Li.
The Exorcist, being guided out of the mansion by a maid, couldn’t help but look back, his face filled with shock.
His bare upper body developed goosebumps, for the heightened spiritual awareness from the animal fat was sending him a warning.
But how could a human emit such a terrifying aura akin to a resentful spirit…
The butler appeared to notice something and pursed his lips, protecting the Baron behind him.
His tone remained unwavering as always, “Has that gentleman said something to you?”
Lu Li looked at the butler and neither confirmed nor denied.
The conversation between clever people was simple; the butler nodded and continued, “We haven’t signed the contract yet, so of course you can resign if you find it inappropriate—”
“I disagree!”
Baron Joseph loudly interrupted the butler, her eyes revealing an undeniable possessiveness, making her seem like a little girl facing a beloved doll.
The cold aura around Lu Li burst out even more fiercely, darkening the once bright hall, and a chilling palpitation began to grow in the depths of everyone’s hearts.
“Anna.”
Lu Li called out softly.
After a few seconds of pause, the aura gradually faded, and the hall visibly brightened again.
Lu Li tilted his head slightly and saw a figure disappearing behind the half-closed door of the guest room.
Baron Joseph’s face paled from the impact of the aura, but she still looked defiantly up at Lu Li without surrendering.
The butler, realizing the Baron’s determination, relaxed his whitened lips and said, “You have seen the Baron’s sincerity.
We have no intention of hiding anything.
If you agree to help the Baron out of his troubles, we will offer you a generous reward.”
Lu Li did not respond immediately.
Actively participating in an Evil Spirit Ritual had never been Lu Li’s style, but since the refuge was not fully set up yet, Lu Li desperately needed money, and Baron Joseph was very wealthy.
Having made up his mind, Lu Li turned his head and whispered, “Anna, what do you think?”
He could not make the choice for Anna.
Seconds later, Anna’s answer came from the void.
“I am with you, whoever wants to hurt you will have to kill me first.”
Lu Li nodded slightly, his gaze falling on the butler, “Unless you meet my conditions.”
“What conditions?”
Baron Joseph asked eagerly.
“Fifty thousand Shillings as payment.”
Lu Li deliberately quoted a high price so that he could ensure there would still be something left after the Baron bargained—
“Agreed!
I can give it to you now.
Lulu, prepare fifty thousand Shillings for our charming Exorcist Lu Li,” Baron Joseph answered anxiously, his hoarse voice, usually used for disguise, entirely gone.
Lu Li frowned.
He should have asked for more.
The butler also frowned.
The Baron’s quick agreement left her with little room to negotiate…
Well, it was only fifty thousand Shillings, not even the daily rent of a few blocks of street property.
Nevertheless, the deal between Lu Li and the Baron was officially struck.
Completing this commission, Lu Li would be able to fill the gap in the Deep Sea Stone at the refuge, and he wouldn’t have to rack his brains looking for ways to make money anymore.
Lu Li returned to the parlor to wait, while the butler, under the Baron’s impatient look, started the assessments anew.
Petra still sat in the same seat as before, as if he had never moved.
He nodded at Lu Li without asking about what had happened outside.
The assessments outside visibly sped up, and within half an hour, Exorcists successively entered the parlor, until a few minutes after the sixth Exorcist arrived, the banquet in the garden outside resumed.
The selection had ended.
The six people in the parlor were the only ones who had discovered the evil spirit.
Excluding Lu Li.
They believed they would be the ones to resolve the Evil Spirit Ritual, but the butler soon arrived, politely saying to two of them, “I’m sorry, but we have limited spaces for the Evil Spirit Ritual, we can only add four more people.”
To compensate the two Exorcists, the Baron’s Mansion would provide a carriage for their return and a payment of 2,000 Shillings.
Though their pride was hurt, no one wanted to offend a noble, and the two Exorcists left obediently.
The butler then said to the remaining four, including Lu Li, “Please wait, the Baron will come and explain the specifics to you.”
She briefly left the parlor.
Minutes later, the two large doors of the parlor were pushed open, and Baron Joseph, flanked by the butler and the maids, walked in and took a seat at the head of the long table.
She glanced around with some dissatisfaction, and with her red lips slightly parted, she said, “It’s too bright in here.”
The maids scattered, one after another lighting the candles on the long table and the pillars’ silver candlesticks, and turning off the chandelier.
Boom!
Flames rose in the fireplace.
In an instant, the parlor became as mysterious as an ancient castle.
The flickering firelight cast shadows on Baron Joseph’s profile, her red lips curved, and a lazy, hoarse voice spilled out.
“Now, this is the atmosphere for storytelling.”
