Chapter 331 - 331 188
331: 188.
The House that Eats People 331: 188.
The House that Eats People “What do you hear?” Lu Li asked Anna.
“What?”
“I heard you scraping a table.”
The boss and Anna, seemingly from the void, said.
“It’s killing me!
This human wants to kill me!” the counter continued to complain loudly, and the entire cafe echoed with whispers that couldn’t be heard clearly, as if responding to the counter.
“How much longer, mother?
I can hardly wait to turn this human into my counter…
Okay, I’ll wait a bit longer…”
Seemingly getting some kind of response, the voice of the counter gradually faded away and disappeared.
Everything returned to normal.
After listening quietly to the voices, Lu Li said to the puzzled-looking boss, “A cup of hot milk or coffee.”
Though the boss found Lu Li’s actions a bit strange, he nodded and went to prepare the hot drink anyway.
Anna’s faint voice rang out by his ear, “Do you feel something is off?”
“Somewhat, we’ll talk about it later.”
Lu Li shifted his attention back as the boss pushed a cup of coffee in front of him.
“We have no milk, but the coffee has just been heated.
Would you like some sugar with it?”
“No need,” Lu Li said as he picked up the somewhat hot coffee cup.
A sharp cry came from the coffee cup: “It’s so hot, damn it, I’ll use his head as my cup!”
The counter retorted, “He’s already my counter!”
“He’s too small, you fool!” the coffee cup snapped back.
“That’s my business!”
“You can’t fight me over him!”
“I saw him first!”
“Your head is full of wood!”
“There’s nothing in your head!”
The counter and the coffee cup started arguing loudly, and amid their quarrel, a naive voice came from beneath Lu Li, “I think he would make a good chair.”
The coffee cup and the counter both paused sharply in response and then cursed at the chair that had just spoken.
Just as they were arguing vehemently, a furious consciousness suddenly appeared among the three noisy objects, and the bickering trio simultaneously shut their mouths, trembling as if in fear of something.
“Sir?
What’s the matter?” the boss suddenly couldn’t help but ask.
The customer in front of him had been motionless ever since he picked up the coffee cup a few minutes ago.
Lu Li set down the coffee cup and asked the boss, “Is there anyone else in this cafe besides you?”
The boss, increasingly puzzled by the customer’s strange behavior, still replied, “Normally, neighbors come over for tea, but they won’t come now with the rain pouring outside.”
Lu Li nodded and, turning to Anna, said, “Take him out of here.”
Before she could react, Lu Li suddenly stood up, turned, and rushed towards the cafe door.
Click—
A thin sound on the wooden door, the latch suddenly locked itself.
Lu Li’s speed sharply increased, and he body slammed into the wooden door.
Bang!
Lu Li’s figure briefly halted for a moment, then he instantly smashed through the wooden door.
With a loud crash, splinters flew and the wooden door was flung outward, followed by a sudden, piercing scream echoing.
Lu Li rushed out of the café and stood in the rain curtain in the middle of the road, turning to look at the café.
Behind the broken door, the frantic café owner, lifted by the concealed Anna, drifted out of the café and landed near Lu Li, splashing large clumps of mud around.
Anna then revealed herself, floated in front of Lu Li, and said with a complex tone, “Although I don’t understand why you suddenly decided to rob, whatever you do, I will follow.”
Lu Li calmly said, “There’s something wrong with this house.”
Anna’s chaotic thoughts suddenly paused, and realizing something, she turned back to look at the café, “Is there something strange inside?”
“Pretty much.”
Lu Li squinted his eyes, trying to keep the cold rain from getting into them.
He sensed that due to his sudden behavior, an uncomfortable consciousness was awakening within the café.
Anna also perceived the moment the consciousness appeared, and under her senses, the café suddenly seemed to come alive, possessing a life of its own—
It was watching her.
The watching filled with hatred made Lu Li frown.
It was calling out to him.
The malevolent call raised an ominous premonition in Lu Li.
The nearby manager had already gotten up, looking at Lu Li and Anna with terror, not daring to run away.
Withdrawing his gaze from the house that had come to life, Lu Li looked towards the frightened manager, “I’m an investigator, which you might also understand as an Exorcist.
Your café is a creature; if you’re not completely out of the loop, perhaps you know about the carnivorous house at 33 Elm Street.
Your café is the same.”
Every resident of Elm Street knew about the carnivorous house, and the manager was no exception.
He asked in astonishment, “My café…
also eats people?”
“Yes.”
Anna had already revealed herself in front of the public, and without bothering to conceal herself anymore, she bluntly asked, “What do we do now?”
“Contact the investigator base.”
Ignoring the middle-aged manager, who was still digesting the information, Lu Li, thoroughly soaked, retreated under the eaves of the building across the café, which was a clothing store, locked with no one inside.
Just to be cautious, Lu Li dragged his fingernail across the wooden door—no sound came out.
Then, Lu Li opened a small wooden box containing rotten flesh, waiting for the crow to arrive.
The manager stood in the middle of the street for a while before cautiously moving towards the café.
Anna slightly opened her mouth as if to say something but ultimately chose to remain silent.
Lu Li, as always, remained calm, watching the middle-aged manager approach the café—then he stooped to pick up a wallet from a puddle, quickly retreated, and ran staggeringly toward Lu Li under the shelter.
But he stayed far to the side, not daring to speak to Lu Li and Anna.
After waiting in place for a while, a dark shadow emerged in the curtain of rain before them.
It flew low toward the eaves where Lu Li was, landing on Lu Li’s raised arm.
Ignoring the manager’s furtive peeks, Lu Li said to the crow, “Go and tell the investigator base, a new ‘Carnivorous House’ has emerged at 63 Elm Street.”
“Caw!”
The crow’s dark eyes reflected Lu Li’s figure.
It gazed at him for a moment, cawed hoarsely, and with a flap of its wings, disappeared into the rain.
As time passed, the middle-aged manager began to shiver, hugging his shoulders, while Lu Li stood tall and straight.
Half an hour later, a Steam Locomotive approached from the distance.
This steam locomotive was covered with a peculiar rain cover to prevent the water from extinguishing the fire.
The door bore a logo with an eyeball.
It was the Night Watchers.
Thinking it over, Anna quietly concealed herself again.
The steam locomotive was not merely passing by.
It stopped in front of Lu Li, and several figures clad in black raincoats descended from it, their black uniforms visible as they moved.
The man leading them paused his gaze briefly on the shaken manager then approached Lu Li, “Greetings investigator, we are from the Night Watchers, team 78.
I am Captain Pryce.”
His voice paused slightly at this moment, Captain Pryce looked puzzledly at Lu Li.
“Have we met somewhere before?”
