250: One hundred and seven.

This man is from the Otherworld.

Tesla usually did not ask questions of his juniors and subordinates.

The questions they had were such that Tesla could guess with the staff in his hand: We are becoming more powerful, more Exorcists are emerging!

To him, this was meaningless and could not provoke a single thought.

However, regarding Lu Li, Tesla treated him as a peer.

He believed that Lu Li’s words could provide him with some novel and interesting ideas.

Lu Li was silent for a moment before he voiced the answer in his heart, “Develop technology.”

Perhaps there were many paths to take in this world, but in the eyes of Lu Li, a visitor from Anotherworld, nothing suited humanity better than technology, especially here in the early stages of the Industrial Revolution.

Once technology reached a certain level, no matter if it was an Evil God, an Evil Spirit itself, or some bizarre creature, as long as its approximate location was known, a nuclear missile could be sent their way.

If one didn’t suffice, then two.

Even for those creatures without a physical form, who could guarantee they wouldn’t suffer from nuclear radiation?

If nuclear missiles proved ineffective, then technology would continue to be developed, reaching toward the stars and seas.

Afterwards, whether colonizing other planets or launching a Star-Destroying Bullet at this planet, both would be good options.

But this path is long, so long that the people of this world might not endure till that day arrives.

“Industry, eh…”

Tesla’s pace slowed a bit as he thought of steam engines, smoke-billowing trains, steel ships in harbors, and the large, smoke-emitting chimneys in factories that never ceased day or night.

“Perhaps this is also one possibility for our victory,” Tesla smiled and resumed his pace.

Lu Li’s comments did not cause Tesla to ponder deeply.

The shackles of perspective prevented them from seeing the road of technology veiled in fog ahead.

This was understandable, as Lu Li did not believe that the technology of this world would operate following the development trajectory once observed on Earth.

On Earth, technological and industrial advancement had exploded simultaneously due to war.

But here, due to a common fearful enemy, countries rarely engaged in the kinds of frictions that lead to war.

Without conflict, there is also a lack of progress.

A person’s race can only surpass itself.

Hundreds of years had passed since the creation of the Flintlock Pistol, which primarily featured Spirit-Calling Guns, yet they still maintained the outdated flintlock black powder model.

If only there was a Gatling Spirit-Calling Machine Gun with a 20mm caliber and a firing rate of over 1000 rounds per minute, the Exorcists would not have always been so suppressed.

The people of this world were still engaging in ancient battles: fighting beasts with the bones of beasts.

Arriving at the rest area, Tesla sat down at the table, removed his top hat, and waved to the person behind the counter, “Two cups of milk, one with two cubes of sugar.”

He placed his cane beside him, “Do you really like milk?”

“It’s healthy, but it’s expensive.”

“You could buy milk powder.”

“It tastes bad.”

The process of milk powder still involved dehydrating and scraping off the milk film then crushing it into powder.

They could not remove the goaty taste of the milk, and throwing in more cane sugar did not mask the flavor.

Buying costly milk powder to supplement nutrients with Shillings rather than eating other foods simply did not make sense.

“That’s true.”

Tesla smiled, “You could come here often in the future; this place is almost becoming a base for the Alliance.”

There seemed to be an undertone to his words, and Lu Li countered, “Are our relations with the Alliance not good?”

“That’s not the case, we have a very good cooperative relationship.

It’s just that this place has been desolate for a long time, as you can see we don’t even have the basic decor because no one comes here.

You can’t expect the investigators who don’t come home all day to treat the base as their home…

But in terms of not coming back, the base is quite similar to home.”

“How do we contact these investigators?”

“We usually use crows.”

“Crows?”

This reminded Lu Li of a silhouette in a bird beak mask.

“Flying crows,” Tesla explained.

“They are mysterious and smart, vengeful and united, somewhat like us.

People misunderstand crows as a symbol of death and loathe them.

Part of the reason is that we promote this idea to protect them.

Another part is that they carry envelopes and fly to those adventurous investigators, who usually appear in strange and dangerous places, typically in groups of four.”

“Can they distinguish us?”

“Crows have a keen sense of smell and can detect the scent of nearby investigators’ insignias.

Speaking of insignias, here’s one for you.”

Tesla took an insignia out of his dress coat pocket and pushed it towards Lu Li.

“Investigator’s insignia, our proof of identity.”

It was an insignia the size of a lens, a black-grey color with a strange texture like obsidian which reminded Lu Li of what Tesla once mentioned about a material that could block the passage of souls.

The insignia was carved with an image of a sinister black crow with three eyes; one of the eyes was embedded with a copper-colored eyeball, while the other two lacked eyeballs, looking hollowly at Lu Li.

“What’s this?”

“An exorcist’s proof of identity; there’s no conflict, investigators also hold the same status,” Tesla answered preemptively to Lu Li’s unasked question, “Don’t exorcists and investigators conflict?”

Lu Li nodded, tapping on the second eyeball of the black crow, “Then the second one represents the demon slayer, what about this one?”

He pointed to the third empty eyeball.

“Demon hunter, the sharpest and finest of human existence.”

After a brief silence, Tesla said with a rare sense of longing, “Every demon hunter can make even the emotional evil spirits, wicked gods, and other bizarre entities tremble with fear and keep a distance.

Only the best exorcists have the chance to attain the status of demon hunter, such as first needing to eliminate an actual evil spirit.”

“Do we still have demon hunters now?”

“Of course, but we don’t call them by their names nor their codes.”

“Why not?”

“Because of ‘True Name Perception.’ Some evil spirits and evil gods possess the ability to kill anyone whose name they know, which is extremely dangerous.

Therefore, those who join us as exorcists or investigators typically conceal their names, using codes instead.

Demon hunters don’t even use codes.”

“What about the night watchmen?”

“They don’t need to; they only deal with the anomalies that have been thoroughly investigated.”

“How many demon hunters do we have?”

“Secret,” Tesla said with a mysterious smile.

“Just as we fear their presence, our enemies fear the unknown.”

Lu Li nodded, “A deterrent.”

Tesla couldn’t help but clap his hands, exclaiming, “Yes, a deterrent.

Such a marvelous word.”

Alliance personnel came over and placed two glasses of milk in front of Lu Li and Tesla.

Lu Li did not pay attention to the rippling milk in front of him and continued to ask, “What is this strange perception ability?”

“That would require a long and tedious long test.”

Lu Li fell silent.

At that moment, Tesla suddenly burst into laughter.

“Don’t take it seriously, I’m just joking.”
