Detective Agency of the Bizarre -
Chapter 241 - 241 Ninety-eight
241: Ninety-eight.
Transmission 241: Ninety-eight.
Transmission Under the gaze of four onlookers, Lu Li returned to the rest area and ordered another glass of milk at the reception desk before settling back into his corner.
He remained silent and aloof.
“He was inside for quite a long time.”
“Must’ve been the Sanity Value test, right?
Did he pass?”
“No need to compete for a spot, I’m sure I can pass too.
Even if we had to fight for it, I’d definitely be the one to make it through!”
“…”
The murmured conversation continued for a while until the brawny man, Tristan, appeared at the door: “Daniel, come over for your assessment.”
His shout was abrupt and out of place.
What was once a scene shrouded in mystery now seemed like a burly bouncer hawking expensive second-hand tickets at the entrance of a theater.
Yet, it could not be directly described as shabby, bleak, or undisciplined, for this was the style of Exorcists.
Just like Lu Li, a small figure, silent and uncommunicative, stood up and walked toward the room, disappearing behind the door under the scrutiny of the newcomers.
After a brief moment of calm, the three tables on the perimeter of the rest area resumed their whispering.
Periodically, they would glance in the direction of Lu Li, slowly sipping his second glass of milk, and as time passed, the frequency of their gazes increased.
“If you guys don’t dare, then I’ll go over!”
“I don’t mind.”
“I’ll do it, I like making friends.”
After some discussion, a doll-faced big boy in overalls left his seat and, with a friendly yet somewhat stiff smile, approached Lu Li: “Hey Lu Li, what’s your name?”
Clearly, he wasn’t as composed as he thought he was.
“Lu Li,”
Lu Li murmured, pursing his lips.
Awkwardness crawled up the big boy’s spine, the pretense of composure evaporated, and he stammered, “Uh…
yeah…
okay Lu Li…
nice to meet you…
milk tastes good…
haha…
oh right, I’m Frank.”
He wanted to turn and run away, and even more so he hoped Lu Li would say something to alleviate the awkwardness— anything other than “I’m Lu Li.”
Lu Li looked at him, sensing the honest, rustic vibe emanating from the big boy, even his clothes were old and faded from washing: “Are you a local?”
“No, but I work in Belfast, as a lumberjack, haha…”
Frank chuckled, scratching the back of his head.
A figure taller by half a head than Frank approached from behind, her tone unfriendly as she huffed, “Are you belittling him?”
She was a tall young woman, wearing shorts and a short-sleeved top despite the dreary rainy season, exposing her tanned, muscular skin, her chestnut-red hair tied into many tiny braids.
With a calm expression, Lu Li replied, “I simply assumed that those involved in such trades would know about and join the Exorcists.”
Frank chuckled foolishly: “I like adventures.
My father said I’d make a great sailor, but we didn’t own a boat or live by the sea…
After my father died, I came to Belfast to work, to be a lumberjack, hoping to save enough to buy a boat for a sea adventure.
I’ve calculated it, just another 113,400 trees to fell and I can afford a sailboat.”
Lu Li nodded and turned to the young woman, “And you?”
Getting to know the newcomers could also help Lu Li understand the structure of the Exorcist organization.
“Betawu warrior woman, Doma!” The hostility in Doma’s eyes faded, but she still seemed a bit irritated: “And aren’t you going to introduce yourself?”
“Exorcist,” Lu Li replied succinctly.
Doma nodded, “Oh, just like Grey, he’s an Exorcist too.”
Frank warmly introduced his new friend, Lu Li, “The youth who just went inside is Gray Daniel.
The guy who didn’t come over is Owen.”
Owen, propping his chin on his hands and leaning over the table, waved at them.
“May I sit here?” Frank asked, pointing to the empty seat opposite Lu Li.
“Sure.”
Frank happily sat down and talked a lot with Lu Li.
He was the one doing all the talking.
Through the conversation, Lu Li learned that they had all come into contact with roaming investigators by coincidence and were recommended for an interview because of some excellent qualities.
Similar to Lu Li’s situation, but Lu Li had a higher priority—he was carrying the token of an investigator, and if the investigator who gave him the token died, Lu Li would take over everything from her.
It was akin to inheriting an estate.
What caught Lu Li’s attention was that Frank’s reason for attending the investigator interview was somewhat related to him.
[Forest Shadows]
[Location: Stover Logging Camp]
[This mission was posted by several lumberjacks together, claiming that every evening in the forest, moving shadows and strange communication sounds could be seen.
After observing secretly from a distance several times, they discovered that even when it was dark, the shadows in the forest wouldn’t disappear.
The lumberjacks hoped to discover the truth and exorcise the ghosts.]
[The commission had been on the notice board for several weeks, constantly ignored.
Those capable of handling it were not interested in the money, and those interested in the money lacked the capability to handle it.
I asked some friends secretly they said that the Stover Logging Camp was still shipping out several carts of timber every day, and there were no problems with the lumberjacks.
So, is it possible that someone is playing tricks?]
Yes, Frank was a worker at the Stover Logging Camp.
And it seemed that the logging camp’s abnormal situation had been neatly solved by that investigator.
The sudden opening of the door interrupted Frank’s enthusiastic conversation.
Daniel walked out of the room expressionless, and standing by the door was still Tristan, who looked even more displeased than before, “Next, Doma.”
The tribal warrior woman stood up, brushing past Daniel, and stood tall as she passed by Tristan, who was more robust than herself, as if comparing their statures.
Doma stood before the round table, calmly staring at the three investigator leaders sitting there.
“Sit down.
Don’t be nervous; it’s just a test of your Sanity Value.
We need you to answer a few questions,” Tesla signalled for Doma to sit down.
Tristan, who had no chair, snorted coldly, moved behind Tesla, folded his arms, and said, “First question, you’re on a leaking wooden boat in the deep sea with a stranger.
The boat can only hold the weight of one person.
To survive, would you push that person overboard?”
Doma refused to answer the question, “Betawu people do not leave the land!”
The corners of Tesla’s mouth curved upwards, “Big guy, ask her another question.”
…
Several minutes later, Frank, who was last in line, emerged from behind that door.
The Sanity Value test was complete, and now the formal assessment would begin.
Just like what Lu Li had experienced.
Two Alliance Personnel led Lu Li and four newcomers into another room, a room that had nothing but walls.
Tesla had told Lu Li that he didn’t have to do anything, so Lu Li planned to do just that.
In the room, an Alliance member, his whole body hidden under a black robe, stood in front of Lu Li and the others, reminding, “Next, I will teleport you to the assessment site.
To prevent falling, it’s best if you sit down.”
Frank and the others exchanged glances, barely concealing their expressions of shock.
Are investigators this mysterious and extraordinary…
