Lu Li had not taken any new cases for quite some time.
Probably since he no longer needed the money.
If it had been the Lu Li who first came to this world, he would have told the man calling for help to see a psychologist, but now…
And it seemed like a coincidence, his experiences were vaguely similar to Anna’s.
It was a case of one ‘me’ wanting to take the place of another ‘me’.
After hanging up the phone, Anna’s worried face came into view “Isn’t the money enough for now?
Do we still need to take cases…
especially since you need to focus on dealing with the door and the tentacles…”
“This one is for you,” said Lu Li.
Anna was taken aback, her pale finger pointing to herself.
“Me?”
…
Thump, thump, thump—
The sound of knocking shook the wooden door.
“The client is here.”
Anna glanced at the door; without saying it, she’d already hidden her presence, her figure fading.
She floated beside Lu Li behind the desk and waved her arms, using her increasingly skilled power to swing the door open.
The corridor’s neighborly din, which was audible as the door opened, became muffled as the door shut.
It was approaching three in the afternoon, and most families were starting to prepare dinner.
A man bundled up in a felt hat, wrapped in a scarf, stepping in a heavy coat, his face and form tightly concealed, stumbled into the Detective Agency.
He gasped for breath, drenched all over, raindrops falling to the floor at his feet, calling out urgently to Lu Li, “Are you the Exorcist?”
“Yes.”
Lu Li pointed to the chair across the desk.
“It’s safe here.
Before you sit down, take off your dripping coat.”
Senge hesitated and took off his felt hat and scarf, both already soaked.
As the warm scarf left his skin, the dampness met the cool air, bringing a quick chill.
Removing the coat was even more distressing; touching the cold, wet cloth made it even harder to continue.
At this moment, Lu Li observed Senge.
He was hunching his back, not from a stoop, but because he was cringing.
With the scarf no longer covering his face, his weary, tortured expression was exposed.
Even inside the Detective Agency, even while undressing, he kept glancing around, as if looking for something.
Like a surreptitious old mouse.
“I don’t sense any other spirits,” Anna whispered, floating next to Lu Li.
“Who’s speaking!?”
Senge let out an almost broken, hoarse cry and halted his movements, panic-stricken and looking wildly around.
Lu Li replied, “My assistant.”
“Where is she!?”
Lu Li spoke calmly, “Are you sure you want to see her?”
Senge’s mouth opened wider, his eyes showing terror, “She’s not…”
“Yes.”
Senge’s already pallid cheeks turned ghastly, “May I leave…”
“She doesn’t like indecisive people.”
In the end, Senge still took off his coat and hesitantly hung it on the armless statue.
He convinced himself temporarily.
This Exorcist used a ghost for an assistant, which meant he must truly possess the power to exorcise…
After hanging up his coat, Senge moved slowly towards the desk.
He had just stepped forward when the sound of something heavy falling to the ground came from behind him.
“`
His coat lay on the ground.
Senge squeezed out an ugly smile, trembling, “Does it dislike me putting down my clothes…?”
“Not exactly, but you’re not wrong, another one dislikes it.”
“There’s another one?!”
Senge felt something in his head was about to break.
Wasn’t he supposed to exorcize the demons clinging to him…
why were there more ghosts instead…
“As an Exorcist, it’s quite normal to have two ghosts around you.”
Lu Li’s calm words seemed to offer comfort.
Not daring to touch the coat on the floor, Senge sat down across from Lu Li with reservation, still somewhat uneasy, he asked, “They really won’t hurt people…?”
“They are not wild beasts.” Lu Li interlaced his fingers and placed them to his lips, “So, let’s talk about your commission.”
In the following minutes, Senge stammered through his story, which included more details than what he had shared over the phone.
After listening quietly, Lu Li asked, “Did you bring the mirror with you?”
“How could I!
It’s hiding in the mirror trying to replace me, how could I possibly bring the mirror!” Senge shouted excitedly.
“Go get the mirror.” Lu Li tilted his head towards Anna and looked at Senge, “That mirror will require a separate charge.”
“No, no problem…
as long as the demon in the mirror can be dealt with…” Despite his fear, Senge was very cooperative with Lu Li.
“But isn’t it possible to do without the mirror…?”
“Because we didn’t detect any presence on you.” Lu Li told Senge the truth, “This means there are no ghosts on you, or the other isn’t a ghost, or you haven’t looked in a mirror and it hasn’t appeared for us to sense.”
Senge murmured helplessly, “What should I do now…”
You now have three options: look in a mirror here to let us confirm whether there’s a ghost, go out and see a psychologist, or find another Exorcist.”
Senge jolted, then fell into a dilemma.
As he struggled internally, his eyes fell upon the clothes at the foot of the sculpture and he thought of the two ghosts in the Detective Agency at that very moment.
He made up his mind, gritted his teeth, and said, “You will protect me, right?”
“Yes.”
An Exorcist and a ghost, if they still couldn’t handle what was in the mirror…
the client’s death would no longer require protection.
Anna returned with the mirror, which to Senge’s eyes, oddly floated in the air before landing in Lu Li’s palm.
She didn’t manifest her physical form; apart from Lu Li, she didn’t want to be seen by anyone else.
Lu Li handed it to Senge, who swallowed hard, his movements slow as he picked up the mirror.
“Look.” Lu Li said to Senge, who was facing the ceiling.
After hesitating for a dozen seconds, Senge bit the bullet, closed his eyes, and lifted the mirror—
In Anna’s perception, a few seconds after Senge started to face the mirror, a chill presence began to emanate from his body.
It was the presence of a ghost.
“He is tainted with the presence of a ghost…”
Anna said.
The presence continued to grow stronger, and Anna was on high alert; however, she noticed that the presence stopped increasing after a certain point, and the being inside the mirror didn’t appear.
Perhaps it was not the right time.
Maybe after nightfall, the being inside the mirror would show itself.
Lu Li reached toward his waist, heading towards the Spirit-Calling Gun, but Anna stopped him.
A worried voice rang in his ear, “Don’t use it again, your Sanity Value is already very low…
I can sense that the presence entwined around him isn’t strong; it might even be weaker than me.”
Lu Li didn’t say anything, his hand moving away from his waist.
There was still some time before nightfall; Lu Li did not ask Senge to come back in the evening, but instead to stay at the Detective Agency to calm his emotions and get accustomed to being with ghosts.
A calm person is easier to direct and control than one who is panicking and in disarray.
In a way, Senge was stronger inside than most people.
His current state was the result of the accumulated harassment from the being in the mirror.
Don’t forget…
before contacting Lu Li, he had endured a whole week.
