Chapter 46: Caught in the locker room
Chapter forty six
**Oliver West**
The bell for gym class had already rung when I spotted Heath by his locker, he was typing on his phone, his lips pressed in concentration that looked like he was in no hurry to get to class.
I tried to walk past quickly, but he looked up in that instance.
"Hey shorty legs! Wait up."
I stopped, my stomach still churning from what I’d witnessed on the rooftop. Heath jogged over to me with a smile that made my chest tighten with guilt.
"I wanted to thank you," he said, his voice filled with gratitude that left me confused, he must have seen the question in my eyes, so he spoke again.
"For being yourself. For showing me that it’s okay to be who you really are." His eyes were bright with warmth as he regarded me like I was a savior or something. "Seeing you and Kieran together, it gave me the courage to finally stop pretending."
My face instantly went red and hot "We’re not together! There’s nothing between us, it was just..."
Heath snorted with laughter. "Right. And I’m secretly straight."
"I’m serious, Heath. We’re not dating or anything like that."
He was Kieran’s friend and had spent more time with him in recent years, surely, he was aware of his friend’s preferences. According to Amanda, I would obviously lacked boobs.
"That’s what you think, in Kieran’s mind, you are probably his wife or something,"
My throat felt like sandpaper, my flaming face threatened to explode from my furious pumping blood. Why the hell would I be Kieran’s... WIFE!!!
Everyone kept underestimating me!
"It’s complicated, and you are wrong. Believe me, there’s nothing between us"
I couldn’t exactly explain that Kieran was just playing some twisted game with me.
Heath’s expression softened, he looked about to argue with me, but probably decided against it. Instead, he said "I broke up with Hailey last night. I’m done lying to everyone, including myself."
The image of Matt on his knees flashed through my mind and I had to swallow hard to keep from being sick.
"That’s... that’s great," I managed.
"And I’m going to ask Matt to be my boyfriend. Publicly this time." Heath’s voice was soft, almost dreamy. "I’ve wronged him so much, you know? All these months of pretending he was just a friend, making him hide in the shadows while I played straight with Hailey. It’s time I made it up to him. Actually, I wanted to ask you if you have any good ideas, since... uh you know..."
I wanted to tell him that I had no experience in this too, I was a loser who has never had a boyfriend, but the enthusiasm in his eyes felt like a knife twisting in my gut.
The way Heath looked when he talked about Matt, like he was talking about something precious and fragile, made everything so much worse.
"I think I’m in love with him," Heath whispered smiling, like he was sharing the most important secret in the world with me.
My hands clenched into fists at my sides. I opened my mouth, closed it, opened it again. How could I tell him? How could I destroy that look on his face?
"Heath, I—" The words wouldn’t come out.
My heart was breaking for him and he didn’t even know it. I was still struggling with what to say when I caught a familiar figure in my peripheral vision.
Kieran.
The blood drained from my face. My heart didn’t just drop, it plummeted through the floor and kept falling.
He was moving down the hallway like a storm about to happen, his eyes sweeping the area with predatory focus. Like he was hunting for something.
For me.
Terror shot through my veins like ice water, the cold fury radiating from him even from a distance, made every survival instinct I had scream at me to run.
"I have to go," I choked out to Heath, already backing away.
"Oliver, what’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost—"
But I was already running.
My sneakers slipped on the polished floor as I bolted down the hallway, my heart hammering so hard I thought it might burst. Behind me, I could hear the steady rhythm of footsteps, like death itself was chasing me.
I didn’t dare look back.
The first door I saw, I yanked it open and threw myself inside, slamming it behind me.
It was the locker room.
And right now, it was empty. Everyone was probably already at the gym area.
My chest heaved as I tried to catch my breath, pressing my back against the cold door. Maybe he hadn’t seen which way I’d gone. Maybe...
The door handle turned behind me.
My pulse thundered at the squeaky sound.
I spun around just as the door opened, and there he was.
Kieran.
His large towering frame filled the doorway like some dark angel, and his steel eyes felt like knives slicing through me.
For a moment, neither of us moved. The air between us crackled with something that made my skin feel too tight and my mouth go bone dry.
Then he stepped inside and closed the door behind him with a soft click that sounded like a death sentence.
"Did you really think you could run from me?" His voice was quiet, the same frightening tone he used before he always hurt me in the past.
I tried to back away but my legs felt like jelly. "Kieran, I wasn’t..."
"Don’t." He moved closer, and I could see the barely controlled fury in his eyes, the way his jaw was clenched so tight I could see the muscle jumping. "Don’t even try to lie to me."
When I tried to sidestep around him, he was there, blocking my path. When I tried to go the other way, he moved again, herding me backward until I stumbled, and my shoulders hit the cold metal of the lockers.
"Why have you been avoiding me?"
"I h-haven’t been..." The lie started to escape as a high pitched shriek.
"Ollie" My name on his lips was a warning, his eyes darkening with rage that told me he took my attempts to lie quite seriously.
My mouth went even more dry, like cotton. "I was just... looking for my gym clothes."
At least, this was partly true. I had been on my way to change before bumping into Heath.
Kieran’s eyes traveled down my body slowly, and I inhaled swiftly, why did those intense eyes look like he was memorizing every inch of me?
The concentration of his gaze made heat crawl up my neck and spread across my cheeks.
"The gym clothes you wore last time," he said, his voice dropping to something that sounded like a growl from deep in his chest. "They were very exposing."
