Chapter 33: Sneaky little things

Chapter thirty three

**Oliver West**

I tensed up in my seat. The smooth leather suddenly felt like a pile of sharp nails. My fork clattered slightly against my plate, and I quickly steadied it with shaking hands.

A look of sadness flashed across her features briefly before she covered it up with a smile, but it came out shakily.

"Um, he’s out with friends. You know how boys his age behave, right? They never stay at home."

Mom nodded enthusiastically and she did not pursue the topic further.

Her words made me remember Heath’s words.

Had Kieran really left home because of his mother’s return? It meant there was still no improvement in their relationship?

The thought made something twist uncomfortably in my chest. I knew what it was like to have complicated family situations, but at least I had Mom who cared. Kieran seemed to have nobody.

"Oliver you should visit more often, I don’t ever see you around whenever I’m back,"

The food turned to sawdust in my throat at Mrs Morrison’s words.

Visit.

By my own free will?

I think not.

I excused myself quietly to go to the bathroom.

The mansion was still as large as I remembered.

The designs had been changed over the years. I was surprised I still knew my way around considering how long it has been.

I entered into the bathroom and did my business. When I was done, I washed my hands in the sink.

My gaze caught sight of my reflection in the mirror. A sigh left my mouth at the dull look in my green eyes through my glasses.

I left the bathroom quietly and started heading back when my gaze fell on a door at my right.

It was left slightly ajar. Was it still Kieran’s room?

It had been the last time I came here years ago.

My heart rate picked up as curiosity suddenly got the best of me.

He wasn’t around, so I shouldn’t be too worried.

I gently pushed the door open and walked two steps inside. The familiar smell of his cologne infiltrated my nostrils.

I was right. This was his room.

My gaze trailed over the huge bed that rested in the center of his room. I followed the trail down to the drawer and wardrobe.

There was a huge wallpaper of him that covered almost half of the wall. Those metallic gray eyes seemed to burn right through me even from the portrait.

What was I still doing here! My brain screamed at me to flee outside, but my body refused to obey the order.

I found myself venturing further inside the bedroom.

I opened a drawer to find it completely empty. I slammed it closed immediately.

I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, but I knew I would recognize it when I saw it.

Maybe I was hoping to find some trace of the old Kieran, the one who used to be my best friend. Some sign that he wasn’t completely gone.

I started to make my way out but halted in my tracks.

There. I heard it again.

The sound of familiar voices accompanied by sounds of footsteps coming from outside the door snapped me alert.

My heart pumped tightly against my ribcage.

Kieran?? Oh god!

I thought he was staying over at Vince’s place?

I suddenly recognized the other voice to belong to Vince.

Why were they here? And right now?

My heart thundered with full-blown panic when the sound of the door knob twisting reached my ears.

I needed to hide.

Oh god! He couldn’t find me here!

My eyes suddenly caught on a door beside me. Without bothering with a thought, I raced toward it.

It gave way when I twisted the knob.

It was his bathroom!

Okay. This would have to do for now.

I clicked the door closed, my legs trembling in panic.

I stared around the huge modern bathroom. The size of it was no doubt bigger than my entire bedroom and bathroom combined.

I might have admired it a little more if not for the state I was about to be caught in.

Why did I come here in the first place?

Hopefully, he might leave quickly without discovering me?

I could hear the sound of a wardrobe opening from the other side, then the slight noise of clothes rustling.

"Are you sure about this? Your mom looked quite worried down there," I heard Vince’s voice clearly from my spot.

"You think I give a damn? Her acts are becoming more annoying," Kieran replied. There was a heavy twinge of annoyance and irritation in his voice.

"Are you done already? Then let’s go."

I heaved a quiet sigh of relief.

They weren’t staying.

Just go already! I yelled inwardly.

"No, I think a quick shower would do me some good."

His reply was like a belt lash across my face.

What? No!

My heart sank rapidly to my stomach. I clasped a hand to my mouth before a sound could escape.

Footsteps.

Then the sound of the door clicking open.

Oh god!

I was totally done for.

My mind raced frantically. There was nowhere to hide in here. The bathroom was spacious but minimalist—no shower curtain to duck behind, no cabinets big enough to squeeze into.

I pressed myself against the wall next to the door, praying that maybe, just maybe, he wouldn’t fully enter. Maybe he’d just grab something and leave.

But I could hear him moving around, and my heart was beating so loud I was sure he could hear it from outside.

This was it. This was how I was going to die. Not from some terrible accident or illness, but from the sheer mortification of being caught hiding in Kieran Morrison’s bathroom like some kind of stalker.

I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to make myself as small as possible against the wall.

Please don’t come in. Please don’t come in. Please don’t come in.

But even as I repeated the mantra in my head, I could hear his footsteps getting closer to the bathroom door.
