Chapter 82: Ivy Monster

Chapter 82: Ivy Monster

Flain and Itai were leaving the Imperial City. At the moment, they were on the same path that Bakugo had used to enter the Imperial City.

Flain looked back one more time. He had finally accomplished the goal he had set for himself in the Empire of Light, so he could leave without worries. In any case, he would definitely return here since he had an alliance with Flor.

Under his armor, the Necklace of Deception swung from Flain’s neck. For now, it remained unused.

He could use it to make his tail invisible, but there was one problem. Stage 3 individuals, including Flain, already had very sharp senses, so simply making something invisible wouldn’t help much. They would immediately recognize the tail by the sound it made, though it might surprise them at the beginning.

Another option was to hide his Magic Energy so no one could sense him. But there was one big problem, and that was Itai. If he hid his ME, he wouldn’t be able to hide Itai’s anymore, and since Itai always went everywhere with him, this option was also out of the question.

Likewise, making his body invisible wasn’t an option either, because everyone would feel him by his ME and by the sound he made.

Strengthening his ME to make it seem like he was a higher Stage also wasn’t an option at all — maybe it would scare someone off, but it could also attract someone much stronger, and Flain didn’t want to die.

The best option would be to transform his body to look human, which could be used only for hiding and changing his identity. Flain wanted something that would help him in battle.

So this situation remained unresolved for now. Maybe Flain would come up with something in the future.

At the moment, Flain and Itai had already traveled 20 kilometers while thinking. Flain was carrying Itai in his arms, which looked strange but was very practical. Because if Itai walked on his own, it would take them an eternity to leave the Empire of Light, since Itai only had mortal speed.

With Flain carrying him, he could constantly run at full speed, and since he was a skeleton, he never ran out of stamina. Ghosty was annoying Itai quite a lot with his complaining during the journey, so Flain silenced him.

Suddenly, Flain jumped into the air above the forest and began flapping his wings. Flain planned to fly above the forest and find some Stage 3 monster because he wanted to enjoy a proper fight after a long time.

Forests worked like dungeons — the deeper you went, the stronger the monsters. But the forest was even more dangerous because some strong monsters from the depths might decide to go to the forest’s edge and slaughter the weaker monsters there. That’s something not common in dungeons.

That’s why Flain decided it was better to look for a monster of his level from above. Flain would be able to kill a monster even two sub-stages above him, maybe even higher, though that was too big a risk.

The reason was that he used three weapons — two swords and his tail, which was already a huge advantage in itself. Another advantage was that Flain had quite strong skills. Monsters also had some abilities, but Flain believed his were stronger.

"F-Flain, by the way, I’m scared of heights," mumbled Itai, snapping Flain out of his thoughts.

"I’m probably gonna throw up," he muttered while covering his mouth with his hand.

"Get used to it," Flain shot back.

"And don’t you dare puke on me," Flain added.

Flain was flying above the forest and didn’t even have to go far before finding his target. It was a Mid Stage 3 monster attacking a trio of Early Stage 2 monsters. Exactly what Flain had been thinking about happened— a high-stage creature came to the forest’s edge to hunt weaker monsters. This would confirm for Flain that he could kill someone two sub-stages above him.

Flain dove down and set Itai down a short distance away. The trio of monsters was already dead.

Then Flain looked at his opponent. It was a 3-meter tall gray humanoid. It had long arms, its claws reaching the ground, and its whole body was covered in ivy.

Flain would’ve liked to dust off his swords as a sign that he was about to fight seriously again after a long time. But there was no dust on his blades—he used them constantly.

The monster hadn’t noticed him yet, so Flain leapt into the treetops and attacked from above. Both of his swords sank into the ivy straps on the monster’s back.

Flain’s blades sliced through the thick vines and tore them to pieces. The monster screeched as the ivy on its back burst apart. It turned toward Flain with a speed that didn’t match its bulky body, and its lower pair of arms lunged forward.

Flain stepped back and dodged the attack, his swords gleaming in the sunlight filtering through the trees. The upper pair of the monster’s arms drove into the ground, which was immediately overgrown with fresh ivy.

The ivy collapsed onto him—Flain’s body was overwhelmed by strong vines that slowly crushed him.

Flain had almost freed himself, but the ivy lifted him into the air and began to spin him around. His tail tensed and then lashed forward sharply at the monster, which had gotten close enough.

The sharp spike at the end of his tail cut through the air and pierced the monster’s chest. The creature staggered, and blood began to flow from its chest. Flain broke free from the ivy, but the monster immediately charged at him, aiming a punch at his head— which Flain instantly pulled into his torso, causing the monster’s fist to hit nothing but air.

Flain managed that thanks to his title, Adapter, which he had finally learned to use effectively in combat.

But the monster didn’t hesitate. Ivy began to grow again from its hands, wrapping back around Flain’s body and pulling him in.

The monster clenched its fist and struck him directly in the chest, sending Flain flying through several trees, piercing right through them.

Flain got back up, his armor full of holes and badly damaged. ’I should probably go buy some better armor back in the Imperial City. I only snatched this off a Stage 1 general,’ Flain thought.

Then his head turned toward the monster. "Time to take this seriously," he said with a grin...
