Chapter 69: Flor Wahraid
Itai turned around. Behind him stood a young man who looked no older than seventeen. He was dressed in a black suit, had white hair with a hint of blue tint, and gray eyes. Itai was already Stage 2, so he could sense his ME—he immediately picked up that the boy was Stage 3, which instantly put him on alert.
"Well, honestly, I’m only here for a short time," said Itai.
"Well, I’m glad to hear that. I’m Flor Wahraid. And you are?" Klor asked.
"I’m Itai and the one next to me is Zheren. You have a surname? So you’re a noble?" Itai asked.
"Yes, I’m the fifth son of Archpriest Rodhor Wahraid. Hmm... Itai, that name rings a bell, and your appearance seems a bit familiar too. Wait, are you that A talent?" Flor asked.
"Yeah, I have A talent," said Itai.
"Well, there’s been quite a bit of talk about you among the nobles. But if you have A talent, why are you so weak?" Klor asked.
"Well, I only started training recently. Before that, I lived my whole life as a regular person," said Itai.
"A regular person? People who fight and are above Stage 2 are called the Enlightened, and everyone below Stage 2 is called a Mortal. You’ve already reached Stage 2, so you can call yourself Enlightened," said Flor.
Itai hadn’t expected warriors to have such a status that they were referred to as the Enlightened. "Thanks for the info, I didn’t know that," said Itai with a smile.
"First time seeing the Emperor of Light?" Flor asked.
"That’s the Emperor of Light?" Itai asked in surprise.
"Well, yes. The new Emperor of Light who took the throne only 120 years ago," said Klor.
Itai found it odd that 120 years could be called only. "120 years? He looks about the same age as me," said Itai.
Flor thought for a moment. "It’s understandable you don’t know, since you’ve only recently become Enlightened. When someone channels mana into their body, their body not only becomes stronger but also increases its lifespan. So almost everyone who is, say, a thousand years old looks like they’re twenty. That’s why every mage also trains their body—so they don’t die at eighty," explained Flor.
This surprised Itai—so he would also have to train his body. "Thanks for the advice, that really helped, since I’m a mage," said Itai.
"Wait, how old are you?" Itai asked, startled.
"Don’t worry, I’m exactly eighteen. Among noble children, it’s normal for them to have high Stages even at a young age. The early Stages are easy to overcome. Although I must say, my Advanced Stage 3 is above average," Flor said proudly.
"Wait, you’re a mage? Where did you get your spell?" Flor asked.
"Oh, the Overseer from the Adventurers’ Guild gave it to me," said Itai, then conjured three Ice Spikes in front of him, which was the limit he could summon at once.
"Actually, don’t you want to join the army? With your talent, you’d get the best resources," said Flor with a smile.
"I’m not planning on it yet, maybe when I get stronger," said Itai.
"Hmm, interesting. What type of magic do you have the most talent in? I have talent for ice magic, just like my whole family. Do you have that too?" Flor asked.
"Talent for magic? Honestly, I didn’t even know something like that existed until now," said Itai with a laugh.
"Oh right, I forgot you probably don’t have access to the Lion’s Head. The Lion’s Head determines what type of magic you have the most talent for," said Klor.
Then Klor thought for a moment. "Would you like to come to my home? We have a Lion’s Head there," said Klor with a smile.
Itai hesitated, but he wasn’t too paranoid. "Sure," he said.
"Great, I’ve already called a servant with a carriage," said Flor.
Itai didn’t quite understand how he had called a servant—he hadn’t done anything that could have summoned one.
"Ah, I understand your confusion. Among nobles, there’s a special mage who links the noble’s mind with their servants from any distance. So I can give them commands from my mind and they receive them, but the servants can’t respond. I wouldn’t call it mind communication though—I can only send simple commands. For example, a command like tell me what you see wouldn’t work because my servant has no way of telling me what he sees," explained Flor.
Soon, a large golden carriage arrived, bearing a crest depicting a snowflake colored with blood. Next to the carriage stood five men in armor.
"That’s my family’s crest. I’ll tell you how it was created once we’re inside—heh, I feel like a teacher now," said Flor with a smile.
By the carriage appeared a tall, elderly man who opened the door. "Please step inside, young master," he said.
Flor stepped into the carriage, and Itai followed him. Zheren had to stand at the back of the carriage on a small golden platform because he couldn’t fit inside. The interior of the carriage was luxurious, and the seats were so soft and pleasant that Itai literally felt like falling asleep—he had never sat on anything so comfortable.
"This is unbelievably comfortable," murmured Itai, stretching out on the seat.
"Comfortable? Then you haven’t been on my bed yet," Flor smirked.
"When a new noble family is founded, and if the founder has a title higher than Baron, they must create a crest. This crest was designed by my grandfather, who founded my family, Wahrad. I don’t know about you, but I really like it," said Flor.
"So your father isn’t the head of the family?" Itai asked.
A surname can only be held by a noble, and the strongest member of the noble family is the head of the family. Itai had learned this from his adventurer friends—beyond that, he hadn’t known much until he met Flor. In general, people who weren’t nobles didn’t know much about the nobility; they only knew that nobles were considered superior.
Itai found the topic quite interesting, and since Flor didn’t seem bothered by the questions, he saw no reason not to continue.
"In the nobility, even for the Emperor of Light, one rule applies. Anyone with blood relation to the Emperor of Light or the Head of a Noble House may challenge that individual to a fair duel to the death, one versus one. If the challenger wins, they take the place of the defeated. That’s how the new Emperor of Light came to power—120 years ago, he challenged his own father, the previous Emperor of Light, to a duel to the death. He won and took the throne. My father also challenged my grandfather to a death match 500 years ago and won." said Flor.
As Flor finished speaking, the carriage arrived at their destination...
