Chapter 195: The Shadow Monarch
Chapter 195: The Shadow Monarch
It didn’t echo through the hall like a normal sentence generated by a human’s vocal cords would.
No.
It burrowed into their minds. Into their bones. Her voice was weight itself. Her words were declarations.
An existential dread swept through the manor, thick enough to make even shadows seem too bright.
And still, she did not appear. No body. No silhouette. No face.
Just presence.
Just terror.
Just the knowledge that Vespera, Monarch of Shadows—the thing that should not be—was listening.
Was watching.
And she was angry.
Kaiden observed as the siblings who once made his life hell trembled beneath an invisible hand.
Selena’s knees refused to fully straighten. Cassian and Calix could barely stop their noses from leaking crimson. Their pride, the great Ashborn pride, meant nothing in the face of Vespera’s all-consuming rage.
For a brief moment, a storm swirled behind Kaiden’s eyes, his brain demanding he tell them never to speak like that to his family ever again.
But the fire died.
He exhaled through his nose. The fight in him from earlier was gone.
"You’re just as pathetic as I remembered..." With that, Kaiden turned, his eyes softer now as they found the four women behind him.
Kaiden gave them a quiet nod of reassurance, then gestured forward. Together, the six of them walked in unison, leaving the suffocating trio behind, still trapped under pressure they couldn’t escape.
They ascended the grand staircase. Their path led to a large set of ornate double doors, black and silver, carved with sigils that seemed to be illuminated by an oily sheen. The origin point. The eye of the storm.
Kaiden stepped forward and pushed.
The doors opened with a creak, and the world inside changed.
The shadows that had consumed the manor retreated. Coiling like smoke, they poured in from every crack, every crevice, funneling into a singular mass before slipping silently into the shadows at the feet of the woman lounging on one of two lush crimson sofas.
Vespera.
The Shadow Monarch.
Her legs were crossed elegantly, posture loose and languid, as if she hadn’t just bent the will of half a bloodline with a mere thought. She lifted a porcelain teacup to her lips and took a slow sip, her crimson eyes half-lidded, lazy, utterly indifferent to the chaos she’d just wrought.
Beside her, on the opposite sofa, sat a woman far more fragile in comparison.
Julia Levander.
Aria’s mother.
The illness still clung to her, but it was weaker now. Her face, once hollow and sunken, now bore color. Her cheeks held a soft blush. Her arms—though still slim—had gained the beginnings of strength. She wore a light shawl and a smile that trembled with emotion at the sight of her daughter and the man beside her. Clearly, Julia hadn’t felt the actions of Vespera just now. She was shielded, making her entirely unaware.
Behind them stood a tall woman in a maid’s uniform. Her presence was serene, but her posture was perfect. A loyal guardian.
Vespera’s handmaiden, Elizabeth.
The one who had raised and served the Monarch since childhood.
She offered Kaiden a warm, familiar nod, her eyes briefly lighting with fondness. "It’s been too long," she said softly, her voice full of sincerity.
Kaiden smiled. "Yeah... it has."
And like that, the oppressive air fully lifted.
The reunion had finally begun.
Without so much as a gesture of her fingers, Vespera’s mind touched the Awakened Platform’s interface, navigating to the Marketplace tab.
A pulse of mana shimmered in the space around them.
Then, out of the air itself, six elegant chairs materialized in sequence, crafted from a sleek obsidian alloy, high-grade artifacts bought directly from the marketplace. Their very presence radiated passive auras of comfort, posture support, and even mana stabilization.
Extra, through and through.
Vespera didn’t move.
It was her shadows themselves that acted, slithering across the floor, each lifting one of the new chairs and placing them in a perfect arc before her. As if arranged by an invisible butler staff trained in royal etiquette.
She didn’t so much as pause her tea sipping.
Kaiden exhaled a soft chuckle through his nose. Yeah. That was his mother. Extra didn’t even begin to give it justice.
He took his seat, which was right opposite Vespera’s. The chair adjusted subtly to his posture the moment he sat, using its embedded properties to the max.
Bastet settled into the one beside him, still a touch stiff and reserved from earlier. Nyx followed, crossing her legs and observing everything curiously, while Luna flopped into her chair without reservation, stretching her arms to experience what an artifact seat could provide her. Aria’s movement was the most elegant, gliding over and sitting down with bright eyes fixed on the woman across from her.
"Mom!" Aria beamed. "It’s only been a few days since I last saw you, yet you look so much better already! How have you been?"
Julia blinked as if not used to such brightness from her daughter, with whom she was reunited just recently, but smiled back with the motherly warmth that had long been missing from her features. "I... I’m still adjusting, Aria. Honestly, I was very shocked when Lady Vespera came to my hospital."
"Vespera."
A quiet silence followed after Vespera parted her lips to say her own name. One word. No emphasis. No sharpness.
And yet the air seemed to drop a degree.
Julia stiffened and nodded quickly. "R-right. Not Lady Vespera. Miss Vespera-"
"Vespera."
"... I was truly shocked to find Vespera in my ward. She told me my life could be in danger and that I was to come with her for my safety. Damian and Lux were sent to... um, the guest rooms-"
"Rooms."
Again, just one word. Just that voice. Like a scythe brushing across one’s neck, gently reminding you who ruled this domain.
Julia gulped, visibly rattled. "T-their... rooms. They’re in their rooms."
While the conversation continued, one person ignored it entirely.
Alice.
The sixth chair remained untouched.
Instead of taking it, she walked up to Kaiden, eyed it once with obvious distaste, then turned and plopped herself squarely into her big brother’s lap with zero shame whatsoever. She wriggled until she found the spot she liked, crossed her arms in front of her chest, and rested her head against his shoulder.
Kaiden wasn’t surprised, having become used to her antics.
The others, however, paused.
And for the first time since the pressure had vanished...
Vespera stopped sipping her tea.
Her head turned slowly, crimson eyes focusing on her daughter. The motion itself wasn’t fast, but it carried immense weight.
Her gaze, that had been so casual all this time, sharpened.
