Chapter 29: Spices

Now, this made absolutely no sense.

It was crazy. And honestly, kind of scary.

Not only did she have clean, perfectly tailored clothes for him, but also brand-new weapons, a collection of Qiankun pouches and flasks, and now... a spice stash that bordered on absurd.

In this world, spices were a luxury. They were something only the rich could afford. Yet here, right before his eyes, was a whole arsenal of them. Some he recognized, others he’d never even seen before. A few were even worth more than gold!

So how...?

How could that be possible?

The only explanation that made any sense now was...

"Senior Sister... did you rob a village or loot a sect or something?" Langtian asked, half-joking, half-serious.

"Oh? You think so?" Yue Ling replied with a mysterious smile, raising an eyebrow.

"Or could it be... there’s a hidden village inside this valley that still has people living in it?" he guessed again.

Yue Ling narrowed her eyes, her lips still curled in that knowing smile.

But then Langtian immediately shook his head and rejected his own theory. "No, wait. That’s impossible."

Firstly, if there really were a village here, then why would Senior Sister choose to live all alone out in this desolate place? It’d be way safer and much more convenient to live near a community rather than surviving by herself in this hellish valley, fending off demonic beasts every day.

And secondly, there was no way a secluded village could produce this kind of variety in spices and goods.

Some of those spices came from the far southern lands, where there were humid jungles and coasts. Others were clearly from the frigid north. Each one required completely different climates and growing conditions.

Without active trade routes with the outside world, having access to such a wide assortment would be impossible.

And of course, if there was a trade route, then Senior Sister wouldn’t have been stuck here for over ten years like this.

There was one other possibility: maybe there used to be a village here, one that had trade connections with the outside long ago... but then got cut off when demonic corruption swallowed the land.

But... no. That didn’t add up either.

If that were the case, then the weapons would’ve rusted long ago. The spices would’ve gone stale. Maybe not expired, exactly, but their scent and flavor definitely wouldn’t be this strong.

Which meant...

These spices were harvested recently.

They were fresh.

So how?

"Aaaaagh! This doesn’t make any sense!"

"Hehe~ I’ll take you to the place where I got these tomorrow," Yue Ling said with a teasing glint in her eyes. "Once you see it, you’ll understand right away."

"Why? Can’t you just tell me now??" Langtian groaned in protest.

Yue Ling simply laughed. "Well, what fun would that be?"

Langtian growled in frustration, pouting like a kicked puppy.

But... well, there was nothing he could do about it anyway.

So, sulking, he continued eating his skewers in a grumpy mood, his curiosity was practically killing him.

Fortunately, the delicious flavor of the meat, now enhanced by the heavenly spices, quickly soothed his irritation. Within moments, he was happily chewing again, the mystery temporarily forgotten under layers of juicy, savory bliss.

A short while later, they had finished their feast.

Langtian rinsed his mouth and hands with water.

Then, as he glanced at the pile of empty skewers scattered on the ground and quickly calculated how much meat the two of them had devoured...

"Oh heavens!"

He could hardly believe it.

They had eaten an absurd amount, easily enough to match what he normally consumed in an entire week back at the sect.

And more shockingly... two-thirds of that hadn’t even been eaten by him, a grown man.

No. It was devoured by her - His Senior Sister!

Could it be...?

A secret side effect of demonic meat? Appetite-boosting properties?

Whatever the case, he was completely stuffed now.

Thankfully, there was still plenty of demonic wolf meat left. At least they wouldn’t need to worry about food for a while.

Now came the most important part: Dealing with the consequences of eating demonic beast meat.

Langtian immediately sat down in a meditation posture, with legs crossed, back straight, hands resting in his lap.

He inhaled slowly, deeply.

Then exhaled, calmly and steadily.

Tranquil Heart Breathing Technique.
