Chapter 392: Chapter 392: Step by Step Pressure
Chasing and chasing, the blood trace abruptly came to a halt in the tunnel, as a torrential stream of water blocked Lund’s path.
He looked along the direction of the flowing water and saw that the pitch-black sewer stretched on without end, which caused Lund to frown.
Some of the city’s sewers were connected to a tributary of the Star and Moon River, and engineers had diverted a part of that tributary into the sewers to use the flowing water to wash away waste, saving on most of the cost of manual cleaning.
The mastermind who designed the auction house had considered the possibility of slaves dying accidentally, choosing a main pathway with torrential water flow for the convenience of disposing of bodies, even constructing a secret passage for transporting the corpses.
Unfortunately, even though the master engineer had been so thorough and brilliant, he could never have imagined that his masterpiece would one day be smashed open by his own people, who would unilaterally create another route to the sewer system.
"Hei Yao should have already seen the situation here; that woman has sustained severe injuries and won’t last long in such rapid waters. To avoid drowning, she would certainly rest near the edge. If we follow the flow downstream, we are bound to find her."
Following the current, Lund pursued its path.
The sewer pipes branched out in all directions to ensure complete drainage of city water, with each segment including one or two discrete pipes that led directly to the city streets, just big enough for a person to crawl through.
Those were also the few clean pipes.
Hearing footsteps fading away, Iyas let out a sigh of relief and cautiously jumped out from one of the pipes.
The blood was merely a lure; her injured body had no intention of jumping into the murky torrents mingling with all kinds of sewage.
Setting aside concerns about infections to her wounds, once in the flow, her only choices would have been drowning or being captured by Lund.
Thus, Iyas first dragged her blood-stained foot to the side of the current and then quickly tore off part of her clothing to bandage the wound, retreating into this relatively clean pipe and narrowly avoiding a dire fate.
Hobbling and dragging her body, Iyas limped in the opposite direction of the footprints.
She had gained knowledge about the sewers from the All Things Library.
Besides flowing out towards the river, the sewers also had manhole covers with ladders beneath them for easy maintenance access. If she could find one of these ladders, she could escape the sewers.
Dealing with her wounds and changing clothes could wait until after she had escaped the sewage system.
Enduring the occasional pungent smell wafting through the sewers, Iyas’s hand erupted with Holy Light as she dragged her injured foot, searching for a vertical ladder.
But before Iyas had gone far, the clamor of footsteps again resounded from behind her.
Taught by Pomegranate Granny, Hei Yao had learned a few magic spells, and he had watched the entire battle between Iyas and Lund through Surveillance Magic.
He hadn’t anticipated that Iyas would use such a method to escape the Slave Auction House, her mind nothing like that of the crazy woman who had hijacked their carriage.
Lund followed in pursuit, but the sewer network was intricate.
If Iyas could remain composed and deceive Lund under such circumstances, Hei Yao had every reason to believe that she might resort to the same trickery again.
As Hei Yao pondered his next move, the Underground Bounty Hunters they were collaborating with, alerted by the loud noise, gathered around him.
Hei Yao simply concocted the lie that Yang Yu and the others had sneaked in and then used an explosion to escape into the sewers, urging the Underground Bounty Hunters into action.
The Underground Bounty Hunters, upon hearing that Yang Yu and his group had actually escaped into the sewer, didn’t hesitate at all. They lit torches and jumped into the sewer.
At first, the Bounty Hunters, like Lund, mistakenly thought that Iyas had leaped into the turbulent water.
However, someone soon noticed two distinctly different sets of footprints: one row belonged to Lund, who had followed the flow of the water, and the other set belonged to Iyas.
Opinions among those present varied, but the most widely accepted idea was that Iyas had met up with Yang Yu and his group and that they had split up to move separately.
After reaching a consensus to capture them all in one fell swoop, the Underground Bounty Hunters immediately divided into two groups, one following the footprints left by Lund and the other following those left by Iyas.
Due to her injuries, Iyas couldn’t walk fast, and the Bounty Hunters quickly caught up to her.
To others’ surprise, it turned out to be the wanted Elf Girl, which instantly reduced their enthusiasm somewhat. However, upon seeing Iyas injured, they shouted "Absolutely delicious!"
To them, an injured Iyas was at the end of her tether. Such an easy money-grabbing opportunity was not to be missed—time to rejoice.
Moreover, the ball of light in Iyas’s hand outlined her disheveled and wretched appearance, compounding the temptation to commit a crime.
After all, they were in the pitch-black sewer. In the dark, as long as they communicated well and kept each other’s secrets, no one would know what they had done.
Just as they were each wearing a lewd smile, Iyas completely extinguished the light in her hand, drew her bow, and "whoosh"—launched an arrow that hit the man in the front. Following that, a Ghost Arrow appeared on the arrow, piercing through the bodies of two others behind him.
The three men, as if on cue, clutched their wounds and wailed in pain. However, before they had a moment to catch their breath, a new attack swiftly followed.
A Bounty Hunter who had not fallen took out a sword, attempting to block the arrow, but he was unable to clearly see the trajectory of the arrow in time, and Iyas’s arrow pierced through his shoulder.
The Bounty Hunters with the torches had now become the best targets for Iyas.
"Don’t stop! She’s injured on the other side. If we get close, she won’t be able to cause any trouble."
Several Bounty Hunters activated their skills to block ranged attacks and rushed frantically toward Iyas.
Yet, because the arrows were hidden in the darkness, they always failed to time their skills correctly, and Iyas shot them haphazardly in the face.
Finally, a few got close to her, but then a divine light bloomed from Iyas, creating ripples that centered around her and instantly repelled the attackers, causing them to stagger back and fall over into the group behind.
Within the narrow corridor, which could only accommodate three people walking side by side, Iyas had ample space to make her stand. She fought like a warrior facing death, holding her ground against countless foes.
Iyas’s arrows struck again and again, causing several Underground Bounty Hunters to fall. This sight immediately made the advancing Bounty Hunters think twice.
They had no way to deal with Iyas unless there was someone stronger than her who could block all attacks and get close to her.
But they had no such person on their side. Those still breathing turned tail and ran, knowing that as long as the green hills remained, there’d be no fear of running out of wood.
Iyas did not give chase; the high-intensity attack had depleted much of the stamina she had struggled to recover.
Seeing this group, Iyas had a premonition that that troublesome guy would show up again. She had to hurry to find a ladder to leave this place and couldn’t afford to waste any more energy.
