Chapter 283: Chapter 283: Next Up, Roll Call Time
Yang Yu’s words were startling, leaving everyone present wide-eyed and tongue-tied. A young man facing them had the audacity to speak such sharp words, which required an extraordinary amount of courage.
While some admired him, many elders felt they had lost face.
Their own shortcomings had been openly criticized, leading to collective embarrassment.
Abruptly, a burst of flame shot from one elder’s index finger. No more words were needed; since Yang Yu had adopted such an aloof and fearless attitude, he had to be taught a harsh lesson, to realize that he was nothing but an ant that could be trampled at will before them, so the interrogation could proceed.
But before the elder could act, a cold draft extinguished the flame on his finger.
A magnetic voice floated from not far off,
"People of your age shouldn’t be so impatient. As an elder, making a move at this time won’t only look bad in their eyes, but in ours as well."
The bright lighting highlighted the speaker’s graceful figure, along with the cheekily upturned corner of her half-visible face.
This man was as intriguing as when she first saw him, probably well-aware of his current predicament and knowing that he was essential for negotiations with the fairies, which was why he was so audacious.
Baronaco watched Yang Yu intently from below the platform, finding, as she expected, that things were becoming progressively more intriguing.
The elder clicked his tongue resentfully at Baronaco and reignited the flame on his finger,
"I have ample reason to act. Now that they know Fairyland’s secrets, they should all be eliminated. That’s the only way to prevent Fairyland’s affairs from being leaked."
His voice was loud enough for everyone present to hear clearly.
This was deliberate; he did not actually intend to kill Yang Yu, but rather planned to break their legs, instilling the gravity of the situation to unsettle them and gain more initiative.
However, his words didn’t cause a ripple on Yang Yu’s face.
Yang Yu merely looked up silently, observing everything that unfolded outside, his eyes brimming with an undecipherable smile, coolness personified.
Many elders, seeing his expression, abandoned the notion of using violence to coerce his assistance.
They needed Yang Yu to serve as a conduit for dialogue with the fairies, not daring to truly harm him.
But Yang Yu had made his stance clear, openly hoping that the Library would stop exploiting the fairies and cease deriving any benefits from them...
Where could they find a breakthrough?
"If he had wanted to leak it, he would have done so already. You don’t have to be so aggressive. I’m more interested in how he came to know about Fairyland."
Languidly draped over a railing, a figure wearing a cowboy hat looked towards Yang Yu,
"Say, Yang Yu, can you tell us how you found out about Fairyland?
Who told you?
Or where did you learn about it?"
Finally, the moment had come. Yang Yu, smiling wryly, lifted his finger and pointed to the elder whose finger had been aflame,
"It was Mr. Jes over there who asked me to assist Fairyland in dealing with the ’Darkness’ that has long troubled the fairies."
At these words, nearly everyone’s gaze turned to the shadowy figure whose finger had previously emitted flame.
Well, how convenient. I thought you were using magic to intimidate him, but in actuality, you were trying to destroy evidence!
He snuffed out the flame on his finger, and the shadow’s face instantly flushed red,
"I didn’t, I haven’t, stop talking nonsense! What evidence do you have?"
"Evidence? At that time, it was you who secretly summoned me, and I don’t have anything that could prove you were the one who directed me.
So, Mr. Jes Menkelod Alates Wind Language Moon Shadow, would you please present some evidence to prove your innocence?"
Having his full name spoken out by Yang Yu made Jes jump. His full name was long, and he generally let others remember just the first two syllables.
Over time, aside from particularly close friends, practically no one could say his full name.
Now, Yang Yu’s ability to articulate his entire name suggested a significant relationship between the two.
Despite it being mere suspicion, this slight doubt was enough to be lethal.
Jes’s figure not far away coughed lightly in dissatisfaction, hoping that Jes would provide an explanation.
Sweat beaded on his forehead as Jes gritted his teeth, unsure of how to explain. With one wrong move, he could easily make things worse, and all he could do now was glare at Yang Yu with resentment.
Why does this kid know my name... I’ve never had any contact with him. Could all of this be a long-planned scheme? Is someone trying to use him to bring me down?
His mind buzzing, Jes started to panic, having never imagined that Yang Yu would throw such a bombshell at him.
Just as Jes could no longer hold back and was about to defend himself, Yang Yu’s face revealed a mocking smile, and he changed tack,
"Don’t be so tense, Mr. Jes. I was only making a joke just now. Let’s not suspect Mr. Jes of anything. He’s not the one who told me about the existence of Fairyland.
As for evidence, besides him, I can also accurately call out every single one of your names and correctly judge the strength of each of you."
Having said that, Yang Yu raised his hand, and despite being impolite, pointed at the elders watching and recited each of their names.
Each elder’s face showed more or less surprise as they began to analyze why Yang Yu knew their names. They could only think of two scenarios.
One, someone had informed Yang Yu about the members of the Countermeasures Committee.
Two, Yang Yu had investigated the members of the Countermeasures Committee himself.
In the first scenario, if someone really had told him in advance, why make such a pointless move?
In the second scenario, if he had investigated on his own, why would he specifically look into the members of the Countermeasures Committee? Could he have anticipated from the beginning that things would develop to this point?
Regardless of the scenario, to accurately recognize each person here without having met before, especially with faces obscured by shadows, was no easy feat.
These elders entirely failed to grasp the significance of what Yang Yu was doing.
Or was he just trying to make his face known?
Artie Roosevelt, leaning his cap a little lower, couldn’t help but let out a smile as he leaned on the fence.
Surely a man who always manages to make headlines, he had the entire Countermeasures Committee running around in circles. But trying to fool the Special Measures Committee with clever tricks was not so simple.
Artie stroked his beard and stood straight,
"In the end, you still haven’t explained how you obtained the information about Fairyland."
