Chapter 98 - 23. Elizabeth

Chapter 98: 23. Elizabeth

Mr. Fisher stepped down from the podium and quietly sat next to Damian, sensing the muscle-bound principal’s displeasure. He leaned in and whispered,

"I’ve already condensed it a lot, otherwise I could have talked for fifteen minutes straight... After all, I haven’t been on stage for six years, you understand."

Damian looked at Mr. Fisher for a long time, then took a deep breath and said,

"...I know."

Damian’s face looked troubled, and the others from the research institute felt even more aggrieved and helpless. Mr. Fisher had already slapped them in the face by publicly airing the institute’s issues. He didn’t need to pile on with many adjectives, as the scholars were likely to view the research institute as a pigsty for the entire following year.

Damian just hoped it would have some effect. After all, it was inevitable that he would be called in for a chat by the Griffin Party comrades upon returning.

The opening ceremony ended quickly. Mr. Fisher didn’t stay for lunch with Helson and the others; he still had to find his "old friend" and search for clues about the Witch Research Association and the Undead Witch, so he prepared to leave first.

As he left, he deliberately pulled the brim of his gentleman’s hat down to avoid being recognized by the fervent young scholars behind him who might stop him to ask questions or even for an autograph. They probably thought by hanging his autograph above their beds before exams, they’d be blessed to pass.

Walking in the corner, Mr. Fisher kept a low profile, weaving through the crowds toward the exit of the Royal College. Suddenly, he caught sight of a serene lady standing gracefully beside the grand gates of the college. A large hat, big enough to shield her face, protected her from Nali’s intense sunlight. Her elegant dress wrapped around her gentle and beautiful body, her hands rested before her, as if blending with her surroundings.

The lady seemed to be waiting for someone. A peculiar aura of authority spread through the air, causing many men who wanted to approach to shy away.

Mr. Fisher opened his mouth, then instinctively turned to leave via a side door, but from afar he saw several armed guards near the side...

A feeling of being seen through washed over him. Mr. Fisher sighed, straightened his collar, lifted the gentleman’s hat he had intentionally pulled low, and approached the lady standing by the gate.

The lady didn’t turn around, her braided golden hair resting on her back while she calmly watched the stone pavers of the Royal College’s stairs, until she sensed the approach of a gentleman.

"Princess Elizabeth..."

Mr. Fisher performed a courteous bow, his facial expression stern, the very image of a proper Nali gentleman.

However, the lady didn’t turn but instead, a gentle smile curved at the corners of her lips,

"Mr. Fisher treats everyone, including the King, without much ceremony, which at least shows your sincerity when dealing with them—what’s on your mind reflects in your actions... Except with me, where you always maintain a veneer of cordiality."

She turned around, her pale golden eyes void and vast like an ocean, brimming with gentleness that touched the heart.

She was the embodiment of the word "Princess," the sort of woman who could only be described as such—most elegant, most strong, most beautiful. And the one universally acknowledged to carry this title was none other than the "elder princess"—Princess Elizabeth Gedelin.

Upon hearing this, Mr. Fisher smiled and explained,

"I wouldn’t dare. My loyalty and respect for the Imperial Family, especially towards you, are unfaltering."

Princess Elizabeth didn’t look at him but merely smiled and handed over a small gift box with one hand,

"I have received your reply. This is a gift for your return, a perfume given to me last month by the Queen of Schwali..."

Mr. Fisher accepted the small gift box, but his mind latched onto the crucial information in her words. Schwali and Nali had been in a cold war state, only recently rumored to be reconciling, and yet last month Princess Elizabeth had received this perfume from the Queen of Schwali.

Meaning she must have visited Schwali secretly last month and facilitated the renewal of relations between the two countries.

But why would she give him perfume, and Schwali perfume at that?

Schwali’s men’s perfumes were a mixed bag because of their robust male culture, many of the scents were intense, not the aroma of women’s fragrances, but more like a wild beast’s scent—the type any lady would presumably dislike. Mr. Fisher bet Renie would laugh herself sick if she found out, but he wondered if Rafael of the Dragon-man Species might like such a scent...

These thoughts flashed in an instant, but as Mr. Fisher was about to thank Princess Elizabeth, he lifted his head and once again met her untroubled golden eyes, as if she had been observing him for a long time.

"Thank you, Your Highness."

Princess Elizabeth turned away with a smile, slowly gathering her skirt and descending the staircase. Below, a gold carriage guarded by soldiers had been waiting for a while.

"It’s nothing, just a simple gift..."

She didn’t ask for a reciprocal gift from Mr. Fisher, merely walked slowly onto the carriage. When the carriage door closed behind her and the soldiers began to escort it away from the scene, Mr. Fisher remained still, watching until her carriage disappeared from sight.
