Chapter 94: 20. Witch Research Association

In the following days, Fisher found himself with ample free time. He had managed everything pertaining to his return to Nali with impeccable organization. Now, all he needed to do was wait for results to come in while also preparing for an upcoming lecture at the Royal College and a course at Saint Nali University. After all, Nali’s autumn term was about to begin.

On the following Monday, a week after Fisher discussed with Damian, the latest issue of Nali Journal published Fisher’s "Theory and Proof of the Source of Magic Power," an article co-authored with Helson. As soon as it appeared, it detonated like a bomb within the Nali scholastic community, instantly stirring up the long-silent circles.

Researchers at the Royal College were the first to catch wind of this news. Fearing Principal Damien’s anger at Fisher’s new achievements, they didn’t even dare to visit the Pink Hall, instead choosing to weather the storm until Fisher’s limelight had passed.

They hoped the situation would improve with the start of the autumn term, unaware that at the opening ceremony, the devilish Fisher would have another gift in store for them.

Fisher’s rented house was almost inundated with various types of letters. Some were congratulatory messages from academic institutions and private individuals; others were for academic debates, with some scholars expressing confusion about certain parts of the paper and hoping for Fisher’s clarification; and there were also invitations from numerous Magic Items enterprises in Nali, looking to explore the commercial prospects of soul-oriented magic in the future.

It had to be admitted, those folks had a keen nose for money.

Initially, Fisher intended to read the correspondence, but as the volume grew overwhelming, he had no choice but to stack them aside for later. After all, not all letters required his attention.

"Fisher!"

Several days passed in this manner until, close to noon on Thursday, Fisher, who was upstairs preparing his lecture, was interrupted by Martha’s voice from downstairs. He thought someone had delivered more letters.

"Just leave it on the ground, I’ll get it when I have lunch!"

"No, you have a visitor!"

A visitor?

Fisher set aside his lecture notes, thought for a moment, and made a particularly difficult word even more unpleasant on the draft before placing it on the table. Then, he neatly buttoned up his shirt before descending the stairs.

As he reached the bottom, the spectacle in the living room took him aback.

Several figures wearing dark coats and long hats adorned with the insignia of a Knight Sword had entered his home. They were police who maintained order in Nali, with a dedicated police station for each district. Still, these individuals didn’t look like ordinary officers.

"Good day, Mr. Fisher."

It wasn’t any of those police officers who spoke to Fisher, but rather a lady sitting on the sofa opposite Martha who stood up to face Fisher descending the staircase, greeting him first.

This lady was dressed similarly to the other officers, but her collar was unbuttoned, and she opted not to wear the hat exclusive to the police. A darkening scar on her wheat-colored cheek gave her a rugged appearance.

"Good day, what can I do for you?"

"Allow me to introduce myself: Second Grade Chief of Saint Nali General Police Station, Leola." As Fisher came down the staircase, he noticed the four-winged griffin badge pinned on her chest, indicating a high rank. "We’ve encountered some difficulties with a case we’re investigating, magic-related. We need to temporarily hire you to assist us with the investigation."

As she spoke, she pulled a bulging envelope from within her coat, intending to hand it to Fisher. This was a "cooperation fee" offered by Nali police when requesting experts’ assistance, typically around ten thousand Narliou, but this envelope seemed thick enough to contain closer to twenty thousand.

Fisher didn’t accept it, instead frowning,

"Why not seek out other members of the Magic Association? I recall several members are long-term partners with Nali police."

"We’ve already consulted with two experts from the Magic Association, but they’re clueless about the case. They said Mr. Fisher Benavides might have a clue." Without retracting the envelope, Leola placed it on the table and added, "They mentioned, it’s related to demi-humans."

Demi-humans? And magic-related?

Fisher’s interest was piqued. There were magic attacks related to demi-humans happening in Saint Nali, and even the Magic Association’s members didn’t recognize them—could it be some form of ancient magic?

After pondering for a moment, and since he had no other obligations besides preparing the lecture notes that day, Fisher agreed to help. He didn’t even stop for lunch before departing with the chief officers. There was no carriage waiting outside the rental house; the crime scene must be nearby since they had walked over.

As they walked, Leola said,

"Mr. Fisher, are you aware of the incident that occurred on Karen Street a few days ago?"

"Yes, the commotion was big enough to close off the tram station—I had to hire a carriage to return home that day."

Leola nodded and pulled out a roll of case reports to hand to Fisher,

"On the second floor of Apartment Number 3 on Karen Street, a confrontation erupted last Friday at midnight. The victim, Shu Ji, a 34-year-old male, died of excessive blood loss. He had put up resistance prior to his death, with evidence of gunfire and the use of magic; the assailant is unknown, but a strange type of ’Reverberation’ fluctuation was left at the scene."
