Chapter 466: 28. Nali Secret Bureau
"Everyone! Head to shore immediately!"
"As agreed upon before, we’ll dock for four days! Except for those on duty not allowed off the ship, the rest of you are free to do as you please! Those who need to change shifts or borrow money, hurry up, we’re about to arrive at Patulshen Island!"
"Damn it, I’m out of money... wait, if you help me with cleaning the storeroom I can lend you some."
After a period of sailing, the number of ships on the surrounding sea gradually increased, but there were hardly any merchant ships, mostly various sizes of "civilian ships" equipped with cannons.
The Patulshen Islands have always been a paradise for pirates, geographically located about a hundred nautical miles southeast of the Western Continent. The small countries along the coast fought amongst themselves, so throughout the past years, this has always been the safest supply point for pirates’ navigation.
But with anything related to the word ’pirate,’ killing and death are inevitable. There are no police or overseers here, only the "rules" that everyone tacitly abides by.
Interestingly, even these pirates, who are lawless everywhere else, will subconsciously establish a set of rules that everyone follows once they occupy a territory, demanding that all other pirates adhere to them.
The human pursuit of order is ingrained, and perhaps the standard for this order is too low for other places, but it cannot be absent.
Fisher stood at the bow, looking at the distant small vessels far from the Iceberg Queen, then glanced back at the pirate flag hoisted on the mast, with an inverted steel hammer. It was this flag that revealed their identity to the surrounding pirates and spared them from unnecessary trouble.
For not far away, several small boats had converged on a larger one, creating chaos on the deck, with numerous bodies falling into the sea and chests of treasures hidden on the ship being dragged out, adding a backdrop of screams and wails to the usually quiet sea surface.
Clearly, those robbers had made a good haul.
"Ha, those bloodthirsty wolves... Mr. Fisher, you might not be aware, ship battles within 1000 meters of Patulshen Island are forbidden. That spot happens to be just outside the boundary; some local gangs will come and collect ’tolls.’"
Pahetz licked his lips after watching the scene of the large ship being robbed in the distance. It was obviously not his first time seeing such a spectacle; he just took the extra step to explain to Fisher, the visitor.
The Patulshen Islands’ inspection point was less than a hundred meters from that robbery site, but there was no sign of activity there because, according to the rules, they only managed the vicinity of a kilometer around the islands.
Those robbers would only dumbfoundedly stop their murderous work when waiting for the Northern Ironclad Ship, several sizes larger than the other vessels, to pass through the waters. They’d watch the immense shadow that blocked the sun approach until it directly capsized one of their small boats, then head towards the entrance of Patulshen Island before they belatedly cursed under their breath.
"Those damn..."
"Shut up, who told you to park the ship in front of the entrance! If you provoke them, not even ten lives would be enough for compensation!"
"I..."
On the ship, Pahetz didn’t even look at the vessel they’d trampled over, merely stroking his chin and gazing at the smoke rising from the distant islands, his eyes filled with longing.
For these robbers who drift on the sea all year round, such a place certainly knows how to maximally stimulate their nerves, allowing them to temporarily detach from their bloodthirsty tightrope and soar into the paradise of ecstasy.
Weapons, cannons, gourmet food, brothels, alcohol, drugs...
The blood vessels of Patulshen Island are composed of these damned things, which also bestow upon it an unparalleled life energy, making it endure.
Pahetz shook the last cigarette from his small box, a treasure he normally keeps hidden in the lining of his Chief Officer uniform, not to be lightly shown to others. He had already given several to Old Jack during this period, leaving only one as they arrived here; he needed a good refill.
"Oh, Mr. Fisher, please wait a little longer, we’ll be getting off the ship soon, I’ve got things to attend to... Hey, Mr. Jack, care to go for a drink at the tavern? I know a good one on the island... Hey, those three young ladies can also come out to see the world, or they can stay on board if they prefer."
Having lit her cigarette, Pahetz seemed to realize something. Without waiting for Fisher to speak, she swayed her hand and walked towards Old Jack behind her. As Fisher turned to look at her retreating figure, he was blocked by another tall and cold figure.
Right in front of Fisher stood Alagina, who had swapped her usual black captain’s attire for a traditional Noble leisure outfit favored in the Northern Realm, highlighting her slender form with an elegant, white base color and wearing a little hat adorned with a white feather on her tied-up ponytail.
Yes, similar to the one Valentina had worn, because it was a style favored by the Nobles of the Northern Realm, irrespective of whether from the Female Country or other nations.
The proper way to wear it was to tie a small knot inside the hat with one’s hair, so that the small hat would not easily slip off. Typically, there would be a slanted feather atop the hat, signifying the blessing of the Frost Phoenix.
But Valentina’s hat lacked one, perhaps because her nation did not venerate the Frost Phoenix. After all, she was not a woman of the Female Country, and Fisher didn’t know much about the other Feudal Kingdoms of the Northern Realm.
Now, Alagina dressed so finely made it hard to believe that she was a pirate, exactly as Pahetz had said, she truly should have been the most suitable heir to a Feudal Kingdom.
The surrounding pirates tacitly stayed away from her and Fisher, which explained why Pahetz suddenly chose to leave. And there, like a Noble Young Master, Alagina walked up to Fisher’s side.
Her right-hand injury had considerably healed, thanks to Fisher who, after the Acquisition of Magic Materials, carved a Healing Magic spell for her, allowing her to be rid of the pain.
Yet, for some reason, Fisher would sometimes see her staring blankly at her right hand, not knowing if it was because it hadn’t fully healed.
"We’re about to reach the harbor. Is there anything you want? I have... money."
Her chat skills, however, were somewhat awkward, as contrasted with her beautiful appearance — luckily Fisher had grown used to conversing with her this way.
Fisher thought for a moment. There was indeed an expensive item he needed to purchase, which was mainly Magic Materials. Even if he managed to get some from Valentina, it still wasn’t nearly enough. After engraving Healing Magic for the two of them, they’d almost run out. Fisher still needed to engrave some other magical spells for self-defense.
"I need to buy some Magic Materials. I have some money, but I’m not sure if it’s enough. If not, I’ll have to borrow some from you later."
Alagina nodded without hesitation and took out a neat stack of banknotes and checks from her pocket, which included currency from various nations. The thick stack was wider than both of Fisher’s palms put together. She didn’t even count it before putting the money into Fisher’s hands.
Feeling the weight of the banknotes and papers, Fisher finally understood what Pahetz meant by Alagina’s "little treasury." She barely spent anything on a regular basis, saving most of the money she earned, which meant her savings grew bigger and bigger.
"Is that enough? I have more."
Impoverished Fisher had never seen such an abundance but had encountered wealthy women before. Alagina thought it wasn’t enough and added another striking comment.
"To buy Magic Materials, this much isn’t necessary."
Fisher smiled speechlessly and simply took out two notes from the pile. With these and the Nali gold coins left by Elliog, there should be enough. He folded the rest of the money neatly and handed it back to Alagina.
Alagina pursed her lips but didn’t refuse, simply telling Fisher to come to her if he needed money.
Ossie, perched on the mast, covertly observed this scene. After seeing Fisher agree to Alagina’s words, she quietly sat down, as if she had learned something.
Hidden by the flying flags nearby, Ossie stealthily opened the pocket beneath her cloak and looked inside, where a few pitiful coins lay scattered.
"..."
Ossie slowly closed her meager pocket and then looked up, exchanging glances with Steel Blade beside her. Steel Blade immediately turned his head away, as if he couldn’t bear to look at her.
Should she start saving some money to get a husband?
...
...
"Hoot hoot!"
The loud sound of the steam whistle echoed at the port upon approaching the islands, with the passing ships quickly moving out of the way, fearing to bring misfortune by touching this ironclad vessel.
"Wow, the Iceberg Queen... I didn’t expect to see Captain Alagina of the Four Great Pirates here."
Hidden by the many fluttering flags at the port, two men leaning in a corner of the harbor heard the resounding sound and curiously scrutinized the huge ship sailing toward them.
One of the men wore an eared cap, and the other was dressed in the common sailor’s attire, but unlike other pirates, both were too clean in their clothing and skin.
"Hey, boss, it’s the Iceberg Queen!"
The man with an eared cap whistled softly and looked up.
Above, behind the railing, a middle-aged man with blond hair and dressed in a simple white shirt, was puffing on a Holy Maiden brand cigarette, also eyeing the distant ship. He took a hard drag, squinting his eyes,
"I see it, my eyes aren’t blind... I thought I’d have to go to the pirate port to meet these big shots, but here we’re running into them. And it’s the Iceberg Queen, with whom we have had dealings before."
"Indeed, we’re in luck... Should I go contact Pan Nan now?"
"No, let’s wait, there’s no rush. Let those pirates from the Northern Realm have their fun first, then we’ll talk business."
As the smoke from the old man’s mouth gradually dissipated, the muscles concealed beneath his white shirt were on full display, his face covered with numerous grim scars. Though his posture was casual, it carried an air of danger.
On the back of his right hand resting on the railing, a broken circular tattoo peeked out from under his white shirt.
The meaning of the simple tattoo might seem reminiscent of something impulsively inked during the throes of a passionate relationship with a girlfriend, but upon closer inspection, one would notice the same symbol on the hands of the two men below.
If Fisher were here, he would surely recognize the meaning of that tattoo,
It was the mark of the Nali Overseas Secret Bureau.
