Chapter 431: 12. Curse (Two in One)
"Report, Chief Officer, the steam engine parts in the cargo hold seem to have taken on water!"
"Report, Chief Officer, some of the storage has fallen into the sea."
"There’s some damage to the hull, and the walls of the storeroom have started to leak..."
The crew of the Iceberg Queen bustled about on deck, and after a rough assessment of the damage from the battle, they collectively returned to the deck to report to Pahetz.
Hearing the crew’s reports made the already upset Pahetz look even worse. Chasing the sea ghost for two days without catching a single hair, let alone facing a deficit, and she had just found out from Fisher that the Siren had been killed by this man. It was a slap in the face for all the women on board, and she wished she could find a hole to crawl into...
The frustration built up in her chest, lingering, as she swore with a slightly stinking face,
"How long will it take to fix? We can’t hit the road until everything on the ship is repaired! I don’t want to be walking along and suddenly the water is pouring up to my... stomach."
What Pahetz might have wanted to curse out was unknown, but when Old Jack emerged from the cabin with three Mouse Human Species carrying three or four boxes of spoiled food, she paused for a second and then subconsciously switched to a more civil sentence.
"It will take two to three days, and the key issue is that we’re short on food. Some food has been lost to the sea, and some has been spoiled by freezing. With the current progress and the time needed to fix the steam engine, we’ll likely have to eat once every two days until we reach the next supply point. We can manage, on a tough call... oh, no, wrong, we’ve onboarded a few more people. If that’s the case..."
"To hell with it! Stop talking! Fix the steam engine first, I’ll discuss with the Captain."
Pahetz pursed her lips, watching Old Jack and the cook dump baskets of frozen food into the sea, her mind quickly calculating their predicament. Food supplies were already low, and now battle damage had taken its toll. They might not even reach the next supply post.
With this in mind, she turned to look at Alagina and Fisher, who were at the bow, scrutinizing the island ahead. Alagina was holding a telescope, observing the island’s details closely.
The island, neither large nor small, stood out due to the remarkably tall, lush-covered mountain peak. Near the peak, birds flew and water flowed around, painting the island with a peaceful and lovely image...
What really caught Alagina’s and Fisher’s attention was the sight of a huge wooden ship aground on the beaches of the island.
The ship was large, made entirely of wood, with a gigantic mast standing in the center of the deck, a sail fully unfurled, proof that the ship had no steam power and was an ancient, traditional sailing ship, propelled entirely by the wind.
The ship’s design was ancient; its sails were white, adorned with a large, deep blue feather shape that was strangely unfamiliar.
The hull had no signs of wear or damage, and it slanted slightly, rushing upward from the sea toward the beach of the island. On the sandy beach behind the stern, Alagina could also see a long dragging mark...
If dragging marks remained on the sand, it meant the ship hadn’t been ashore for long, but how could there be a ship of such an old design if it hadn’t been long?
Alagina looked at the feather-shaped totem on the sail and immediately associated it with the feather inside the Ice Prince Sword handed down through her family. The feathers, from their shape and color to the feeling they imparted, were very similar. Could this ship once have belonged to her ancestors?
And was that why the Ice Prince responded to it, or to something, or someone, on that ship?
Fisher, standing beside her, also saw the situation on the island and said to Alagina,
"That island is odd, and the design of that grounded ship is very peculiar. Even before the steam revolution, I’ve never seen any country use this type of shipbuilding. Even judging by the ship’s power model alone, it couldn’t possibly have just come ashore in the past few days. What’s more, this island isn’t recorded on your charts..."
Alagina nodded, but then she touched the tattoo on her back and said,
"I understand, but our ship has suffered structural damage, and we need to replenish some food. We can’t anchor here, and continuing forward could be dangerous. Besides, ever since a moment ago, the Ice Prince’s tattoo has been calling me to go there; there must be something very important on the island. I plan to go there first with Ossie in a small boat to check the situation out. If something’s not right, you can leave."
The Ice Prince?
The Ice Prince had a deep connection to the Phoenix Species of the Northern Realm lore, once one of the Divine Weapons gifted by the Phoenix King to her three children. If the Ice Prince was resonating with something on that island, did it mean there might be members of the Phoenix Species there?
Considering all the Phoenix Species in the Northern Realm had vanished, was it possible that a few had escaped to this place?
Pondering this, Fisher found himself intrigued by the idea of exploring the island, but he didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he looked down at her right hand, bandaged from a wound, seeming to imply, "With your injury, is it really a good idea to explore that place with just Ossie?"
