Chapter 231: 97. Betting with Oneself_4

Keken fled the city before the situation could escalate, and to his family, it seemed like he abandoned them at a time of great opportunity, the path they had painstakingly laid out for him. Naturally, they felt angry and bewildered.

As for whether Rafael could stir up a storm on the South Continent, as the Red Dragon Queen, she certainly had the power to do so.

But even if Keken had done the right thing, he’d only be absolved of his "coward’s" title after the situation over there turned dire.

Mr. Fisher was contemplating Rafael’s matters while simultaneously drinking with Keken to comfort him over his frustration on the return trip to the Western Continent. As they drank and chatted, evening gradually approached.

Mr. Fisher wasn’t drunk at all, but Keken was crying into his drink. Thankfully, he still had two wives who loved him; otherwise, the scolding from his parents and clan would have driven him to jump into a river. The pressure had indeed been overwhelming lately, and he felt discontent everywhere he went. In the end, he even came to drink with Mr. Fisher, an old schoolmate he wasn’t particularly close to...

And now, by the end of the drinking session, he had begun to lose clarity of mind.

"Mr. Fisher, we’re doomed... After all the years and everything we’ve done on the South Continent, if that Dragon-man rises, I dare not imagine what will happen... The South Continent will be overrun with slaughter! Death will be everywhere!"

...

Keken continued to speak, and in his agitation, he finally collapsed onto the table, his mouth spouting incomprehensible nonsense as though denouncing the folly of the other City Lords.

Mr. Fisher looked into the dark liquid of his drink, silent for a moment.

Sometimes that’s just the way the world works: humans inflict violence upon others precisely because they know all too well the brutality they are capable of, and thus they recognize the catastrophic revenge that would ensue if they ever gave their victims a respite. Thus, humans ceaselessly wielded their swords of extermination against the aggrieved demi-human communities.

But the living creatures of an entire continent always managed to preserve embers of life amidst the Flames, or else there wouldn’t be a Doomsday Prophecy that required Mr. Fisher’s efforts.

In this cycle of hateful vengeance, Mr. Fisher, a human, ultimately failed to kill Rafael, the predicted Doomsday demi-human.

Mr. Fisher’s thoughts were complex and contradictory, filled with both a private affection for Rafael and a foolish attempt to break this cycle...

To be unabashedly honest, it was mostly private affection.

But at that moment, stemming from that affection, was a trust in Rafael which led Mr. Fisher to hold up a finger to Keken,

"Let’s make a bet."

"Dora... my dear..."

Keken was too inebriated to understand Mr. Fisher’s words, instead murmuring his wives’ names with a pitiful air.

Mr. Fisher chuckled a bit, but still fixed his gaze on the reflection in his drink as he said,

"I bet that the Dragon-man won’t commit the crime of genocide. If I lose the bet, I will pay the price for opposing the Doomsday Prophecy with my leniency, with both her life and mine."

Keken slept deeply, offering no response.

So perhaps this bet was really between Mr. Fisher and himself... or perhaps it should include Rafael and other would-be destroyers.

Mr. Fisher then shook his head in resignation, downed the drink that held his reflection, and made a makeshift bed on the floor with some extra blankets and sheets, dragging Keken onto it to rest.

Mr. Fisher disliked others sleeping in his bed, with Renie and Rafael being two small exceptions.

He washed his face outside, Lady Martha had already finished her dinner and was nearly asleep, and he went downstairs to make himself something to eat.

Tonight Prince Luosang was attending a banquet at the Golden Palace, and Elizabeth should have arrived in Saint Nali by now. His sudden visit from Keken had prevented him from going to Saint Nali University to examine the letters Moli’s aunt had sent...

Many things had made no progress, but having learned a little about Rafael’s recent situation, Mr. Fisher was content.

That would be enough for tonight.
