Chapter 204: 87. Condition of the Sea Trench
"I had forgotten to ask before, what race of demi-human are you?"
To avoid others overhearing his conversation with Moli, Fisher stretched out his hand to close all the doors and windows and hung a ’Do Not Disturb’ sign at the entrance.
Fortunately, the sound insulation here was very good. People outside couldn’t hear the conversations inside the office. After all, Saint Nali University was funded by the Nali Exploration Company, and they used the best materials for construction. Otherwise, they would not have allowed Pink Hall to extend its reach into the university through pipelines.
Fisher started with this question as a warm-up for the research. Today, he did not plan to study the biological nature of the Whale-people in depth. He just wanted to understand her reasons for coming onto land and her intentions for enrolling at the university.
After a few research sessions, Fisher had become quite skilled. He understood the benefits of a gradual approach... Elliog was an exception; she was older than him and acted very directly, without any need for courtesies. It felt almost as if he had been tricked into losing his innocence.
For Moli, Fisher planned to be more cautious. Firstly, because she truly seemed naive, Fisher did not intend to deceive an ignorant girl. Furthermore, considering his previous excessive actions toward her, he reasoned that both morally and rationally, he should take extra care of her.
"I... I am a Whale-man."
"Whale-man? Are Whale-people what other Ocean Subhumans call ’royal family’?"
"Eh?"
At first, Moli was puzzled as to how Fisher knew about the royals of the sea floor, but she quickly remembered that Fisher had previously interacted with Lingna, so his knowledge of the sea floor wasn’t surprising,
"Mhm, but that’s just the traditional title everyone gives us. We never call ourselves that... But it does seem like everyone likes us a lot. Every once in a while, they throw a lot of food down to us, hehe."
Hmm?
Throwing food?
Fisher suddenly recalled something Lingna had mentioned: that every year, many Ocean Subhumans would make offerings near the Sea Trench to Lord Ramasitia, mainly throwing lots of fish and such as sacrifices into the trench...
So, Lord Ramasitia didn’t get any and the Whale-people lying in the trench ate it all instead?
Having suddenly realized this remarkable truth, Fisher also pondered whether these Whale-people usually don’t seek out food and only eat once a year.
No wonder Moli looked starved when she first came onto land. After she got used to eating three meals a day like humans, she started eating a lot. Perhaps she didn’t gain weight because she had been starved for too long before?
Watching Moli sitting there with a foolishly happy expression, Fisher ultimately didn’t bring up that other demi-humans made those food offerings to Lord Ramasitia. After all, if others already respected them as the royal family, there probably wasn’t a big difference between giving food to a deity or royalty.
"So, the reason you’re called the royal family is deeply connected to your deity, Lord Ramasitia?"
"Yep, only the Whale-man Species among the entire ocean can hear Lord Ramasitia’s voice. We often communicate with Lord Ramasitia and live in the Sea Trench above His temple. He and I get along very well; He often gives me a lot to eat."
As Fisher mused, golden letters on the Demi-human Girls Completion Manual spread out on his desk danced briskly, recording all the knowledge he gathered from his thoughts.
Fisher now had a basic understanding of the society of Whale-people. First of all, their numbers were very limited, and the entire race lived in Sea Trenches deep within the ocean, keeping company with Lord Ramasitia.
However, Moli had not seen Lord Ramasitia’s true form. Only her Mother had seen what Lord Ramasitia truly looked like. She had only visited Lord Ramasitia’s temple.
The temple was located in the midst of the ocean’s depths. Moli said there was no water surrounding the temple of Lord Ramasitia, making it no different from the land.
To better describe what the temple looked like, the not-so-eloquent Moli proposed to sketch it for Fisher. Soon, a quick drawing appeared before Fisher’s eyes.
In the black-and-white image, an odd structure emerged before Fisher.
It was a temple of a style unlike any other, as if naturally formed, yet also as if it had been hewn by some civilization. The whole structure was embedded in a cliff face, protruding a good distance from it.
The temple was not made by the Whale-man Species; it had stood there before their birth, existing for an unknown number of eons.
The entire temple exuded a majestic aura, and it was covered in numerous unintelligible stone carvings, a chaotic composition that revealed no meaningful information.
The temple hung upside down over an enormous abyss, and beside it dangled several strands of black material of an unknown nature. According to Moli, the temple spanned at least a hundred meters across, with the black strands hanging straight down to the heart of the abyss, their exact length unknown.
The embodiment of Lord Ramasitia was at the end of those black strands, but reaching that place was not something ordinary people could do. For thousands of years, only one person had reached the Divine presence believed by all oceanic living creatures, and that was Moli’s Mother.
Speaking of this, she was quite proud. Indeed, it seemed like a great accomplishment, but her Mother had not revealed to anyone what Lord Ramasitia looked like, perhaps to avoid desecrating Him.
Fisher speculated that this could be why Moli had such a good relationship with Lord Ramasitia. As she mentioned, the entire Whale-man Species could summon Lord Ramasitia through the currents of water, except for her and her Mother.
"Is that so..."
In any case, the Mother Goddess that humans believed in did not exist, and he could not imagine what it would feel like to live atop the head of a deity.
Moli mentioned that Lord Ramasitia had never left His dwelling place, instead, He was super fond of talking. Other races couldn’t hear Lord Ramasitia’s voice, only the Whale-man Species could, which often kept them from being able to sleep.
But Moli’s mother was very clever, she came up with a method. If you didn’t want Lord Ramasitia to disturb you, you just pretended to be asleep or play dead.
If He saw you sleeping and not responding to Him, He would quietly leave and go bother another Whale-man.
This method was very effective. Now He often got bored and was already preparing to harass the demi-humans outside the Sea Trench, except they couldn’t hear what Lord Ramasitia was saying at all...
Hearing Moli’s description, Fisher was amused by the affable Divine Entity. It seemed that this deity didn’t put on airs. But being referred to as a God, He must have His special aspects. Fisher had already seen the human appearance that He had taken on for Moli’s sake before, just another expression of His affinity with life.
Fisher also remembered His title, the Origin of Life, the God of Hundred Forms, proving His inseparable connection with life.
If beings like Lord Ramasitia existed in this world, could there be other Gods?
Like the Dragon God, Fermat Baha, traditionally worshipped by the Dragon-man Species, or the God, the Frost Phoenix, Nephilim, worshipped by the living creatures of the Northern Realm, or...
The Mother Goddess worshipped by Humans.
Fisher did not continue his train of thought. Instead, he asked,
"So, what brought you onto land?"
"Um, my mother sent me to deliver a letter to a human and to find my aunt Mu Xi, to bring her back to the sea."
A letter? And to a human? Were there already humans in contact with Ocean Subhumans?
Moreover, based on Moli’s earlier words, Fisher guessed that her mother’s status within the Whale-man Species and the entire ocean was not low, being the only Whale-man who could directly face a deity sounded like a legend. And now there was a human in contact with her mother.
"Where is the letter to be sent?"
"I... I don’t know either. My mother gave me ’Blood Capital Positioning Magic’, which can deliver the letter directly to the human she’s looking for. My mother didn’t want me to show myself to humans, so she specifically asked Lord Ramasitia to bless me, allowing me to take on human form."
"But I know there’s a human who borrowed a relic from my mother. They agreed that it would be returned on his 35th birthday. My mother has written a letter wishing that human a happy 34th birthday, which means there’s only one year left until the time agreed upon for the return. By then, my mother herself will come to fulfill the promise and retrieve the relic."
After listening, Fisher raised his eyebrows in a display of surprise.
"I see, and what about finding your aunt, is she on land as well?"
"Yes!"
Upon mentioning this, Moli pursed her lips, appearing worried as she said,
"My mother and aunt both like to leave the Sea Floor to travel. Otherwise, my mother wouldn’t have lent her personal relic to a human during her travels. Aunt Mu Xi is much younger than my mother but likes to go out and have fun a lot. She also makes relics; she gave me many relics when I was a child."
Fisher didn’t expect that there were still living creatures in the world who could make relics. He thought the craft of making relics had been lost. If her aunt could make them, he wondered if he could learn this lost art from her.
"But my aunt hasn’t returned to the Sea Trench for a year now. Even though she often used giant sea crabs to send things back to the Trench, my mother is very worried about her and has asked me to come ashore to call her back home. I bear no ill will towards humans, and once I find my aunt, I will leave the land and return to the ocean... but I’ll come back from time to time to visit you and Milica."
Fisher’s pen flew rapidly, recording many details about their Whale-man Species, and he gained a rough understanding of the Sea Floor situation.
As Moli had said, she had come ashore just to find her relative, Fisher didn’t suspect deception; she had been almost completely transparent with him.
Including the fact that her knowledge of Nali Language was a gift from Lord Ramasitia, otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to learn the language so quickly; and that it was her he had encountered the other night when she was out using Magic to send the letter to the human who had made the agreement with her mother.
With such matters, Fisher recorded them all but stopped after inquiring about her purpose.
First, because it was approaching evening, and second, because he could clearly sense that Moli in front of him was getting hungry, continuously swallowing saliva, perhaps thinking of something delicious.
Fisher quietly smiled, glanced at the 16% completion on the Whale-man Species social research progress, which was quite satisfactory. Then he stood up and said,
"Let’s stop here for today. I believe your words are truthful. If it’s about finding your relatives, you can share some information with me, and I’ll see if I can help... I’ll treat you to dinner tonight as an apology for the previous incident."
Fisher no longer mentioned the promise that he could invite her for a meal any time during the term. After having a meal with her at the Magic Market last time, inviting her several more times would make him the least respectable gentleman in Saint Nali...
Moli’s eyes lit up slightly, a look of great happiness on her face, but soon, she remembered what the apology was for.
Her cheeks flushed, she touched her lips and nodded quietly in agreement,
"Mhm!"
