Chapter 143: 58. The Mystery of the Soul

"Okay, we’ll arrange the specifics after class today, but let’s leave it at that for now. Don’t keep Princess Isabella waiting too long."

Professor Fisher nodded, marking the end of their conversation.

A second or two after Fisher finished speaking, when he noticed she still hadn’t moved and was looking at her, she suddenly realized it and stood up, blushing as she bowed and said goodbye to Fisher.

Why did it feel like she was always a beat slow in reacting?

Fisher thought with some confusion. He glanced at the time; he still had quite a bit of spare time to make use of. He didn’t feel like going back to his lab to practice just then, as Elliog had been particularly harsh on him, and he thought it might be better to think things through before practicing more, or else it would all be for naught.

However, he felt both physically and magically in great condition, which was perfect for delving into the Soul Completion Manual he had acquired earlier.

He opened his office door, hung a "Do Not Disturb" sign, then locked the office door and turned to close and draw the curtains on the window.

Though ordinary people couldn’t see the Soul Completion Manual, it was better to be cautious—what if someone saw Professor Fisher deep in thought, staring at an apparently empty desk? Might they think he was going mad?

Also, reading the Soul Completion Manual required drawing upon magic power, and the Magic Circuit on his hand would light up.

Fisher sat back down at his desk, took out the Soul Completion Manual from its place against the other side’s lining, and set it on the desk.

The Completion Manuals weren’t originally thick. When Fisher first received the Demi-human Girls Completion Manual, it appeared thick but only had two pages upon opening. However, after recording Renie, the pages began to multiply on their own, seemingly endless.

Fisher turned to the page where he had last stopped and started reading the following sections.

As his gaze swept over them, the indecipherable, tadpole-like script quickly contorted, reshaping into Nali text that Fisher could understand. During this process, however, the Magic Circuit began to spread light along his arm, as the reading consumed his magic power.

Below the main text that Fisher had already read, there appeared a line in a different color, possibly Caleb’s annotations. Unlike the academic text above, this line was filled with his personal comments and thoughts, quite vibrant with life.

"I’ve been considering the uses and principles of the soul, and it seems that Magic is the only application I can think of... so I’ve decided to visit those ’dangerous elements’ who use Magic."

"I really couldn’t understand why the magic practiced by the dragon-men is so dangerous, to the point of often harming their own bodies. Is there really no way to improve it? I visited the Dragon-man Mage Kelihaar... Oh, I noticed all dragon-men’s names end with ’el.’ The High Priest told me that ’el’ signifies ’continuing individual,’ a testimony to their lineage from the ancient Dragon God Fermat Baha."

Fisher had previously noticed that all names of the Dragon-man Species ended with "el," such as Rafael, Mier, Lar, Kexier, and Fasher...

But when he asked Rafael why, they couldn’t give a reason, only knowing that their names had been chosen this way for generations. Unexpectedly, he found the answer in the Completion Manual.

"I asked Kelihaar why they don’t change their magic, and to my surprise, they happily invited me to improve their magic... My god, did they think I was a Magic Master? I went through great pains to explain I don’t know any Magic! Afterward, I learned that all magic of the dragon-men, including that of other demi-humans, had been learned from humans on another continent! They thought I was a human from that continent, wondering how to get me to improve their Magic... Damn, no wonder they’ve been feeding me so well!"

At this, Fisher’s eyes narrowed slightly, his intense curiosity driving him to continue reading.

"So, there are human settlements in other places too! Here I thought that upon leaving my homeland and coming to this world, humans were still in the primitive age! If there’s a human civilization on another continent, what is their level of civilization? I tried to inquire from the dragon-men, but they know nothing about it, they only know of another continent through their scriptures."

"What a shame... but this also raises a question, if the two continents are far apart and the dragon-men lack the capability to explore, how did they learn Magic from humans? Could it be that humans came by ship, like Captain Columbus?"

"This is a great secret, but I had almost forgotten why I came here in the first place..."

Next, Caleb described how he learned from the Dragon-man Mage the principles of Magic, wherein the power of Magic is actually about leveraging the soul’s energy to pivot the world, prompting the world to respond, thus achieving various miraculous magical effects.

In this sense, it is indeed about using force to pivot the world, which also suggests that the soul itself is an energy source and a self-renewing resource with self-healing features, although this energy recovers very slowly.
