Chapter 126: 45. Old Jack’s Phone (Request for First Subscription)

Just as Renie had said, she didn’t stay long in Saint Nali. After enjoying a fun play with Mr. Fisher that evening and receiving a necklace he bought for her as a gift, she wore it proudly around her neck.

The next morning, Mr. Fisher woke up only to find that the black-haired lady had already disappeared.

Renie seemed to dislike the scenes of parting from Mr. Fisher. Every time they reunited, one could feel her meticulous preparation, but when it came to parting, she would leave without saying goodbye.

Mr. Fisher didn’t mind and stayed a long while in the fragrant-filled room before preparing to head off to teach at the university.

He had a few matters to attend to lately—aside from his routine classes, there was also the issue of Carlo, the Artificial Witch. He was still at the Pink Hall, and Mr. Fisher was somewhat concerned about the role Pink Hall was playing in this visit of Schwali to Nali; he always felt that this "entertainment venue" seemed a bit too suspicious.

Another matter was that he had to start re-reading the Soul Completion Manual. Previously, because he feared encountering dangers in the South Continent, he didn’t use his Magic Power to obtain information from it. Now that he had settled down, Mr. Fisher thought it necessary to continue exploring this manual that looked very different from the Demi-human Girls Completion Manual.

He always felt, the Soul Completion Manual was more serious, his own manual seemed less valuable without a demi-human girl around. There were still no clues about the Son of the Sea and the Sky God, so Fisher planned to start researching that Centaur girl to possibly gain some additional insights.

When Mr. Fisher went to the washroom to clean up, he discovered that not a single drop of water came out of the faucet.

"Mr. Fisher, didn’t I tell you, the water is cut off today. They say it’s because of a fault in the pipeline system far from here; heaven knows how it affects us here. But luckily, I stored quite a lot of water yesterday, in the bucket next door."

"Ah, I see now."

Lady Martha’s reminder came from outside the washroom. Only then did Mr. Fisher fully wake up, Renie’s delicate fragrance always made him sleep deeply at night, and he didn’t know exactly why.

Lady Martha left some bread, and Mr. Fisher, taking the bread, headed out. While waiting for the tram, he thought it might be better to stay in the university dormitory for some time, especially since Schwali’s delegation was about to arrive in Nali. It probably wasn’t wise to spend so much time commuting every day.

He would call Lady Martha in the evening to discuss this matter.

At about 8:20 AM, Mr. Fisher arrived in the classroom on time and, as usual, placed his coat, hat, and Handcane on the coat rack beside the podium. He casually glanced over the classroom and noted that besides Princess Isabella and Moli who were sitting in the front row, many faces had changed.

It seemed many students couldn’t handle his strictness and had swapped classes with those in Roger’s course. Now, he should be able to receive correspondence from those students in his office mailbox.

Nonetheless, Mr. Fisher paid it no mind and turned to start the class.

"After discussing the nature of Magic, this class will mainly cover the various parts of a complete spell and the precautions needed to understand and engrave these parts..."

A simple class quickly concluded, and he then assigned the students their first homework task.

The homework given on Wednesday was to be submitted to his office mailbox by the following Monday. After giving out the assignments to the students, he ignored the grim faces reading the homework topics and simply turned and left.

"Hey, Mr. Fisher, did you just finish teaching?"

"Ah, yes."

When Mr. Fisher entered the Magic Academy’s office after his class, besides Roger, there was another very young lady sitting there chatting with him. When she saw Mr. Fisher walk in, she brightened up and stood to greet him after Roger,

"Good day, Mr. Fisher."

"This is Selena, one of the few Magic Professors at our Magic Academy, a named member of the Magic Association, and a Magic researcher with Nali Exploration Company."

Saint Nali University was funded by Nali Exploration Company, and in times of faculty shortages at the Magic Academy, they provided some staff to alleviate Ken’s pressing needs. It seems they spared no effort in favoring the distaste towards the Griffin Party.

"Hello, Mr. Fisher."

"We were just discussing yesterday’s Gedelin Festival. Hey, Lady Lao Fang got quite drunk at the party, she said you were by no means a gentleman and remarked that your personality is as cold as your appearance, ha ha, what did you do to her at yesterday’s event?"

Selena blushed, clearly, the gossip had originated from her; she hurriedly shook her hand, saying,

"Lady Lao Fang had too much to drink yesterday; those were certainly unintended words."

Mr. Fisher remembered how, to defuse the conflict between Princess Elizabeth and Renie yesterday, he had taken the blame many times, so receiving such an evaluation seemed reasonable.

"I had expected a worse review, and thought she might curse me with a poem."

"Hahaha, that wouldn’t happen. Lady Lao Fang is responding to those gentlemen interested in Mr. Fisher; after Princess Elizabeth left, those ladies still had the guts to inquire."

After saying this, Roger adjusted his collar. He still had classes to attend, as did Selena. Selena, with rosy cheeks, patted Roger’s back, clearly scolding him for sharing this matter with Fisher, but both Roger and Fisher thought nothing of it.

Fisher watched the middle-aged man and the young lady leave the room. He felt that their relationship was beyond ordinary, very likely a romantic one.

In the many years of rapid economic growth in Saint Nali, those personalities that were long suppressed by propriety and restraint seemed to have burst forth all at once, not only in the style of clothing becoming more liberal but also in concepts of romance. There were even many writers who praised these types of love affairs with age gaps, such as that fellow Lao Fang.

A beautiful young lady and a mature, wealthy, elegant gentleman—she liked that kind of atmosphere.

Fisher shook his head, unconcerned with his colleague’s private life. He then took out the class-change request letters from his mailbox and roughly skimmed through them before tossing them aside. He then picked up a pen and began to write a letter to Carlo, the witch.

With Schwali’s visit approaching, he needed to call this witch to discuss matters, particularly about the Pink Hall.

After finishing the letter, Fisher took out a neatly folded paper airplane messenger from his pocket. He clamped the letter inside the gap on the paper airplane, and after inserting it, the airplane seemed to come alive, firmly clasping the letter in the middle while its wings began to flutter.

As it floated, it slowly turned translucent, entering a state where only the sender and receiver could see it.

Fisher watched it wobble towards the sky, flying towards Saint Nali City, then retracted his gaze.

Having nothing else to do at the moment, Fisher initially wanted to take out the Soul Completion Manual to study, but after turning to look out the window at the South Continent demi-human Protection Association, he decided to first try to bind the centaur Xiayat using the Demi-human Girls Completion Manual.

Because binding a research subject would cause significant physical strain, Fisher worried that after studying the Soul Completion Manual, if he ran out of magic power and then tried to bind the centaur, he might faint on the spot.

Fisher climbed out of the window and headed towards the location, but this time, he didn’t see the centaur girl kneeling on the ground, picking vegetables behind the small wall. The place was empty, seemingly because she had been called by the New Party for a lecture.

It seemed she was often summoned by those people to participate in such activities, used as a tool to propagate "love and peace."

Suddenly, Fisher felt pessimistic about studying the centaur girl. While he could possibly still come to talk to her occasionally, if it came to research and she was consistently absent, it would be troubling to maintain any progress in locking down a research subject.

Fisher, frowning, walked back towards his office. Before he could climb back over the wall, he noticed the phone ringing incessantly on his desk. Who could be calling at this time?

He picked up the receiver, and a familiar, aged voice came through,

"Hello, I am looking for Mr. Fisher Benavides..."

Fisher raised his eyebrows and said,

"Old Jack? How did you get my office number?"

"Oh, Fisher, that’s you. I called your rental earlier, and Lady Martha answered. She said you were teaching at Saint Nali University, so I had the operator connect me to the university, and they then transferred me to your office."

Listening to this convoluted telephone procedure, Fisher was somewhat amused, but since someone had transferred so many calls to reach him, there must be an urgent matter. So he asked,

"What’s the matter, did something urgent happen?"

There was a momentary silence on the other end, as if to confirm something. After waiting a second or two, Old Jack continued,

"It’s like this, the day before yesterday, a strange guest came here, ordered a lot of drinks, and then after getting drunk, she just lay on the table motionless, hasn’t stirred until this morning. If she weren’t still breathing, I’d have thrown her out by now."

"You mean, she slept in your establishment for an entire day and night and hasn’t woken up?"

"Yes, I couldn’t help but shake her a bit last night, my gosh, then I took off her cloak, and it turns out she’s not human! She has some features humans don’t have. She’s a demi-human!"

"A demi-human?"

"Yes, and I’ve never seen this type of demi-human before. Maybe it’s just that I’m not well-informed, but she looks really strange... I know you understand a bit about demi-humans, could you come over and take a look?"

Fisher’s eyes flickered, and he replied,

"Alright, I’ll come over and have a look."
