Chapter 100 - 24. Snake Head Tavern
Chapter 100: 24. Snake Head Tavern
After hearing Fisher’s words, the three adorable little girls blinked in unison, their movements so synchronized that they resembled three clones.
"Let’s ask some friends."
"And friends of our friends too!"
"Come on, Dian Dian One!"
As the girls began to call out, rustling sounds started emerging from around the underground room. Old Jack, who was holding the three milky little girls, turned grim. He always felt uncomfortable when they summoned their friends, fearing they would bring in diseases.
That’s why he didn’t let those rats enter; at most, he allowed them to appear at the mouth of the pipes.
Soon, many curious rats emerged from various pipes within the room. Sniffing towards the three little girls outside, some even waved and blew kisses!
"Karen Street... Where’s Karen Street?"
"We need to point them in the right direction."
"But the rats there might not remember well, after all, that was from the week before last."
Karma and the others spread out a map of Saint Nali on their hands. Their tiny fingers traced every street and finally stopped at Karen Street, the scene of the incident. They lifted the map and pointed the location to the rats sitting at the pipe’s exit. The rats squinted their eyes, looked for a while, and then stood upright, patting their chests, indicating, "Leave it to us."
Every time Old Jack witnessed this scene, he felt that those rats must be some sort of sprites in animal form. How else could they express such lively emotions? The next moment, a multitude of rats surged out through the pipes, creating a crisp sound like raindrops as they moved.
Watching the rats disappear into the room, Fisher pulled out an envelope given to him by the Nali police. Inside was nearly twenty thousand Narliou; he placed the envelope on the small table in the center of the room. The three Mouse Ladies showed no concept of money, but Old Jack’s gaze lingered over it for a long time.
"That’s a lot of money. What exactly are you looking for? If it’s something dangerous, I advise you to stop now."
"It’s not dangerous, but the information is indeed worth that much."
Old Jack glanced at Fisher but didn’t refuse as he indeed needed to save some money.
Fisher understood their situation. Before Jack passed away, Old Jack had spent a lot of money on his son’s treatment, to no avail, and the money could never be recovered. Although Old Jack still had a tavern on Snake Head Street, that was not a good resting place.
This place was frequented by criminals, gang members, and addicts. Over the years, he grew tired of it; to be precise, he grew tired of Saint Nali.
If it weren’t for his son who was studying and working here, he would have left long ago. Old Jack wanted to move to the Nali countryside, anywhere would be fine, to live out his final years.
Also, the three Mouse Ladies couldn’t show their faces here and had to stay in the basement every day. His desire to move grew stronger. He decided that after moving to the countryside, he would raise the three girls and then send them back to the South Continent, their homeland after all.
But that would likely be a matter for much later. Old Jack was in good health and still retained the shadow of the mobster who had wielded knives wildly in his younger days.
The basement remained quiet for a while, as the three little Mouse Ladies clung to Old Jack, not minding the heat, and occasionally looked curiously at Fisher, who was meditating in the distance. They only looked up when the familiar rustling returned in the nearby pipes.
"They’re back!"
The group of rats from earlier reappeared at the pipe above, panting heavily against the pipe wall before squeaking, gesturing with their hands to three Mouse Ladies, who made sense of their meaning.
"Like that, huh..."
"Oh!"
"My goodness."
The Mouse Ladies nodded. Karma, the eldest and leader, excitedly turned to Fisher and said,
"They say a squirrel saw a human jump down from the second floor that evening. After hitting and breaking the human railway, he ran off quickly. They ask if this is the person?"
Fisher thought for a moment, then nodded,
"Yes, that’s him. I want to know what this person looks like and where he is now."
Karma nodded, turned back, and shouted a few sentences at the group of rats. After hearing her, the rats looked at each other, flailed their tiny hands, and began to gesture.
"Ah, they say that person was very fat and they couldn’t see his exact appearance because it was dark. But they know where he is now."
"Where is he?"
Fisher looked up at the rats above, who drew a circle with their hands and then frantically pointed upwards, chattering excitedly.
Karma and the others opened their mouths and, turning to Fisher, spoke in unison,
"They say, that man is now on Snake Head Street."
""
Fisher’s expression changed as he stood up, clutching his hand cane and hat. He waved hurriedly to the three Mouse Ladies behind him,
"Quick, have your rat friends take me there!"
"Oh oh oh, hurry up! Dian Dian One, take Uncle Fisher to have a look!"
...
...
Snake Head Street was actually quite extensive, not only including the drainage system but also many buildings extended by the Nali people in the direction of the main underground river behind it, so the latter half of Snake Head Street resembled a market built within an underground cavern.
The deeper the place, the fewer the ordinary citizens, because, impoverished as they were, they feared for their safety, knowing death in the depths might go unnoticed. The regulars here were only the abandoned addicts and various dangerous elements.
In a tavern deep within, a lady who clearly didn’t fit in with her surroundings sat at that moment. Tall, she held in her hands a large mug of Nali beer, her hat resting on the bar table in front of her, surrounded by several pirates who had disembarked with her, including the obese Chief Officer.
"Ah, the taste of Nali beer is really not bad!"
These women from the Sardinia Female Country had not an ounce of femininity but were rather hearty, guzzling down half of the liter-sized beer in one go, their faces flushed as they surveyed the people coming in, hoping for a wonderful "romantic encounter" that day. But the men were either too ugly or too dirty, not to their liking at all.
Only Alagina drank in silence, her deep blue eyes perhaps pondering something.
"Hey, Captain, what’s up? Ever since you returned from the city district a few days ago, you’ve been out of sorts. Have you taken a fancy to some delicate gentleman?"
The obese Chief Officer and Captain’s confidant nudged Alagina with her shoulder, bringing her back from her thoughts. Alagina turned her head toward the Chief Officer, hesitated for a moment, and then said,
"I indeed took a liking to a fine gentleman... but he’s quite special."
"Special? What do you mean?"
"He’s different from the men back home; he’s more assertive..."
"Oh... you like that type, huh."
The obese Chief Officer quietly sipped her drink, suddenly having a rough idea of her Captain’s preferences. It wasn’t her cup of tea, for she preferred a dainty and cute sort of man, but since the Captain liked him, she couldn’t say anything against it. What mattered most now was to console her, to comfort the Captain who was experiencing the pangs of first love!
She looked around, thinking for a while before saying,
"Oh, that’s not bad either, after all, having a man to look after you all the time is a beautiful thing... we’re fine with whatever’s on top, so relax, Captain!"
Alagina paused slightly in her drinking, glanced at the Chief Officer beside her, and whispered a little quieter,
"He... he likes being on top."
"..."
The Chief Officer’s mouth dropped open, and she found herself at a loss for words for a moment. Looking at the silent Captain and then at the crew beside her, who pretended not to care but were all ears, her inner turmoil was screaming trouble, and the forced smile on her face grew increasingly awkward,
"Oh.. oh, well, that’s... fine. Come on, drink up, drink up, Captain. Maybe a little more will help you see things clearer?"
Alagina looked at her for a while, lifted her mug again, and finished off the remaining beer, attempting to wash away her thoughts with alcohol.
As she set down her cup, a greasy hand suddenly clambered onto her shoulder, accompanied by a voice that sounded like a duck’s quack,
"Hey, handsome, care for a drink with... oh my, you’re a woman?!"
Alagina frowned and turned around, only to see a flushed-faced fat man standing behind her.
The fat man’s gender was ambiguous, somehow in between male and female, with not just a bizarre voice but also crimson lipstick and purple eyeshadow smeared on his face, all under a layer of white foundation.
He was just too fat, sweating profusely after only a few sips of drink, the sweat beads dragging his melting foundation down his chubby cheeks, getting stuck in the folds until they couldn’t go any further.
His originally leering expression turned to one of discomfort, like he’d swallowed a fly upon seeing Alagina’s handsome face and the rise and fall of her chest. Retreating several steps, and upon seeing her Sardinian pirate companions, his face sour, he realized he had bumped into a tomboy vying for men!
"What bad luck, I thought I had found a noble-looking handsome man, only to realize it’s just a tomboy..."
The man sneered, oblivious to Alagina’s increasingly cold face, and also didn’t notice the door had opened. A rat was the first to dart out, starting a frantic commotion directed at the obese man.
"My God? Why is there a rat here! Disgusting!"
Before the fat man could react to drive away the rat, a gentlemanly Nali holding a cane slowly walked in through the door, quickly scanning the tavern upon entering. Confirming the drunken fat man had no companions, he locked eyes with the surprised Alagina for a second.
He had found the member from the Witch Research Association.
