Chapter 1277: Chapter 1281: Dying with One’s Eyes Open
His mother shook her head, a wry smile on her face suggesting a form of relief. "Forget it, there’s no reasoning with scum like you... You’ll never understand that for many people, reputation and innocence are far more important than life itself! My father has been diligent and honest his whole life, never committing a wrong or evil deed, big or small. I didn’t mean to kill anyone; it was an accident. The court won’t sentence me to death, but the fact remains that two lives were lost because of one corpse. Once this gets out, everyone will sympathize with the ’other woman’ who died along with her unborn child. They will say that my father abused his power, getting my intentional homicide sentenced as manslaughter instead. My father’s lifelong spotless reputation will be ruined. At the twilight of his life, his good name will be impaired because of me, his unworthy daughter, and he will be spat upon and cursed."
"No... No, that won’t happen..."
His father shook his head. "Lanlan, I’m willing to take the blame for you, to say that I was the one who killed..."
"Isn’t that the same?"
His mother raised her eyebrows and smirked. "So, abusing power to protect a son-in-law’s reputation is somehow better than doing the same for your daughter’s?"
His father shook his head in agony. "Dad won’t mind... really... Between reputation and my daughter, dad would choose his daughter. Dad won’t blame you..."
"But I will blame myself..."
His mother calmly said, "My father’s lifetime of honor can’t be destroyed by me... And besides, a murderer should pay with their life. She was the ’other woman,’ deserving of disdain and scorn, but her actions did not warrant death..."
As she spoke, she bent down to pick up the paper cutter from the floor.
He saw his father rush over to try and snatch the paper cutter from his mother’s hand.
He realized what was about to happen; forgetting that he wasn’t at the scene, he desperately lunged forward, yelling, "Mum, don’t!"
He wanted to stop her.
He had forgotten where he was, unable to distinguish between the video and reality.
It was as though he had entered into that scene.
As though if he could just rush over, he could grab the paper cutter from his mother’s hand, and she wouldn’t have to die...
Gu Junzhu wrapped his arms around his waist, no amount of his hysterical struggling allowed him to move even a half step forward.
He watched helplessly as his parents struggled over the paper cutter.
He saw, somehow, the paper cutter plunge into his father’s chest.
He watched as his father’s mouth continuously sprayed blood.
He watched as his father, trembling fingers soaked in his own blood, scrawled the skewed words "I killed Mi Wuya and then committed suicide out of fear of my crime" on the floor.
He saw his father’s body convulse, hanging on to his last breath, gripping his mother’s hand, pleading intermittently, "Lanlan... don’t die... Survive for Ah Jue... Survive... Lanlan... I’m sorry... I... I love you... I’m sorry..."
He saw his father’s hand go limp in his mother’s hand.
Dying with his eyes open.
He watched his mother give a tragic laugh, pulling the paper cutter out of his father’s chest and slashing her own wrists.
He shook his head frantically, screaming "No, no, no," his vision darkened, his body weakened, and he fainted.
When he woke up again, he was lying on the couch.
Opening his eyes, he blankly stared at the ceiling for a long time before sitting up.
A cup was handed to him, his uncle’s familiar voice ringing in his ears, "Drink some water."
He took the cup, noticing the water shaking violently within it, and that’s when he realized his entire body was trembling.
Gu Junzhu sat down beside him, "It’s okay, Ah Jue, everything is over now..."
