Chapter 68: Chapter 68- officially

"Oh, got it."

Karl said that and hung up. Lilian was left confused.

"What was that about?"

Why would someone call just to ask where she was?

Little did she know, Karl was actually testing Morrison again. Last night, he deliberately let slip that he planned to take Lilian hiking today—knowing that if Morrison cared, he’d definitely try to intervene.

Now, here Lilian was, working overtime on a weekend, so early...

It was clear how much Morrison cared about Karl’s little game.

Maybe because Morrison heard nothing unusual during their call, he finally turned and left. The moment he did, Lilian felt the world lighten and breathed a long sigh of relief, shaking herself awake to focus on her work.

As she meticulously double-checked the numbers, a cup of rich coffee appeared in front of her. She blinked, then looked up at Morrison, who had quietly made it for her.

"Thank you..." she murmured.

Back when she used to accompany him for overtime, she should have been the one serving tea and coffee. But he always made his own coffee—and made one for her too. Since she didn’t like hers too bitter, she always reminded him to add extra sugar.

She hadn’t expected that, given their current relationship, he’d still bother making coffee for her...

Morrison set down the cup without expression and turned to leave, his straight-backed silhouette radiating cold indifference.

"No need to thank me. I just don’t want anyone yawning their way through my work and lowering my efficiency."

Then he went back to his desk.

That one line reduced his small act of kindness to a cold, formulaic explanation. Lilian said nothing further, took a sip of the sweet coffee, and dived back into her work.

She was a responsible and diligent worker. The coffee helped her shake off the lingering tension with Morrison and focus fully.

Several times during the afternoon, she brought documents over to Morrison with questions, and he responded with professional, businesslike answers. Their brief exchanges were all about work—no awkwardness, no hidden meanings.

Hmm, no talk of feelings, only work — and somehow, they could still get along peacefully.

The entire morning passed like that, the work finally done.

They each packed up their things and left. From the office to the elevator, then down to the underground parking lot, neither said a single word.

Since their breakup, Lilian had never been the one to start a conversation with Morrison. Except for polite greetings, it was almost always Morrison who reached out first.

So at moments like this, Lilian was even less likely to say anything — she just wanted to get away and drive off as soon as possible.

Morrison didn’t say a word either. Lilian had been nervously expecting him to bring up her relationship with Karl again, but he didn’t ask, nor did he say anything.

She couldn’t explain why, but his silence felt like a quiet storm. Far more intense than his usual shouting fits or angry outbursts—this was a deeper kind of fury.

They parted ways in the parking garage, each getting into their own cars. Lilian was so anxious to leave she almost clipped a neighboring vehicle with a shaky turn.

Just then, Morrison honked sharply from not far behind. Lilian snapped out of her distraction, quickly corrected the wheel, and carefully drove away.

She was mortified. All because of him — his cryptic moods had her all distracted and on edge.

Morrison, watching her car safely exit, finally exhaled deeply himself.

What kind of driver was she? Always either hitting curbs or bumping into other cars.

After Lilian left, Morrison didn’t immediately drive off. The frustration burning inside needed an outlet, so he called Dave, hoping to go out drinking that night and blow off some steam.

Even though there was nothing he could really say about his tangled situation with Lilian, just sharing a drink with his most trusted friend could ease his mind.

Lately, Dave had been busy with some A.T. business, so it’d been a long while since they last met—a good chance for a small reunion.

But unexpectedly, Dave declined his invitation.

"Not tonight, sorry. Laurent and I are taking Lilian and Karl out to dinner."

"What?"

Morrison felt like he’d just heard the biggest joke in the world. Dave taking Lilian and Karl out to dinner? Since when had they gotten so close?

Dave spoke from the other end,

"You should know Lilian is officially with Karl now, right?"

Dave figured the Burg Eltz and Morrison family must all be aware of this by now. So he continued,

"Well, Laurent and I are heading to A.T. in a few days. Before we leave, we want to meet Karl — to keep an eye on Lilian. Even though she really likes Karl, she’s inexperienced in relationships. We want to make sure she’s careful and doesn’t get hurt."

Even though Morrison was Karl’s elder brother, Dave didn’t hesitate to express his concern for Lilian’s future. No matter how much Karl was approved by their parents, Dave wanted to give him a thorough assessment. If there was any sign of unreliability, Dave wouldn’t approve.

Morrison was almost losing his patience. "She really likes Karl," "keep an eye on her"—all these phrases made him want to scream.

Dave talked as if the four of them were one big, close family. Suddenly, Morrison felt a pang of envy for Karl’s straightforward status!

Oblivious to Morrison’s tension, Dave pressed on,

"Karl is your brother. What do you think of him?"

Even as Karl’s own brother, Dave seized every chance to gather intel, always thinking about finding the perfect match for his sister.

"Pretty good," Morrison replied coolly.

Dave was about to breathe a sigh of relief when Morrison added,

"There’s nothing in his heart besides research."

Dave was speechless...

What was that supposed to mean? First "pretty good," then "there’s nothing in his heart besides research"?

Did that mean no feelings for Lilian? No love?

But Karl and Lilian’s relationship was heating up. Lilian said she liked Karl a lot, and Karl said the same about her...

Before Dave could ask more, Morrison had already hung up.

Dave didn’t dwell on it. They were meeting for dinner tonight anyway; he’d observe Karl in person. Besides, Laurent was with them — a real pro at love affairs.

Thinking about it made Dave smile. How funny to call her a pro, considering her only conquest was him.

But she really did deserve that title — she’d always won, before and after their divorce. She had him completely wrapped around her finger.

Morrison slammed down the phone after calling Dave. The fire in his chest only grew hotter. He had called Dave hoping to relax over a drink — but instead, he’d just dug himself a deeper pit.
