Chapter 441: 208. New Year in Iwate Prefecture: His and Her Morning (5)_2
As the year came to a close, the delivery work became even busier, and he could only rest on New Year’s Eve.
The stove was lit, the pancake puffed into a ball, and the kettle steamed.
"Has Meiji eaten yet?" Mrs. Dubian asked.
"Mmm." Dubian Che put the dinner plate into the sink.
Mrs. Dubian rose and walked over to the stove, poked the bloated pancake to check it, then used tongs to pick it up and placed it on Dubian Che’s plate.
Dubian Che sat down at the dining table.
"Auntie is really nice to Mr. Dubian," Kiyono Lin said with a smile.
There were still some pancakes on the table that were no longer hot.
Dubian Che tore open a pancake just taken from the stove, looked at his mother and said to Kiyono Lin,
"Just the first few days I came back. Wait a few more days and you’ll see, there’ll be no food to eat."
"Nonsense!" Mrs. Dubian retorted.
Dubian Che took a bite of the pancake and sipped the soup.
"You see?" he said, raising his eyebrows at Kiyono Lin.
"I understand." The perceptive Kiyono Lin nodded. "But you do like to talk nonsense."
"Don’t you start with your nonsense."
"Auntie, do you know what Mr. Dubian is like at school?"
"He often calls Mr. Xiaoquan and says he’s doing very well."
"Mr. Xiaoquan is really unfortunate." Kiyono Lin sighed for Xiaoquan Aonai. "Zhi, Mr. Dubian usually just stares at..."
"The blackboard!" Dubian Che almost choked on his soup, hurriedly cutting her off. "I stare at the blackboard, right, R-san?"
Kiyono Lin shifted her gaze from Mrs. Dubian, looked over with a smile. "Am I talking nonsense again, Mr. Dubian?"
"Nonsense, I’m talking nonsense."
R-san flashed a victorious smile.
"Mom, this Tokyo girl is picking on me," Dubian Che complained to an adult.
Mrs. Dubian chuckled twice and said to Kiyono Lin,
"Lin, I’ll be counting on you to keep an eye on Little Che at school. Let me know if anything comes up."
"Alright, Auntie."
"Let’s exchange contact information."
"Sure."
Watching the two trade emails and add each other as LINE friends, Dubian Che worried about the future, considering Kiyono Lin never lied.
Though not engaged in any illegal activities, some things—like looking at Kiyono Lin’s legs—definitely didn’t need to be shared with his parents!
Not only did they exchange LINE contacts, Mrs. Dubian also added Kiyono Lin to the Dubian family group chat.
Dubian Che thought for a moment and also added Jiutiao Meijie, who was still sleeping upstairs.
The family group’s member count rose from three to five.
Looking at that number, Dubian Che thought of Mayi Asuka, far away in Tokyo. Maybe one day, this number would reach six?
He wondered how his parents would see him then...
Before that, he might already have been obliterated by Jiutiao Meijie—no, obliteration would be too easy; it would be more like being butchered.
The word ’butcher’ somehow made him think of pigs and sheep.
After breakfast, Mrs. Dubian cleaned up the dishes.
"Little Che, go to Yoshida’s house for me and bring back some Blessing God Pickles; I’m heading out right after."
"Okay."
Blessing God Pickles, a pickled dish made from seven kinds of vegetables.
"I’ll come with you," Kiyono Lin said.
"Sure, a nice walk would do, and I’ll show you the country sights."
Kiyono Lin, still in her sweater and long skirt, walked with Dubian Che to the entrance.
While putting on his shoes, Dubian Che paused.
"What’s wrong?" Kiyono Lin asked.
"Nothing." Dubian Che put on his shoes. "Let’s go."
Before breakfast, the son casually mentioned to his mom that his feet were a bit cold. After breakfast, his shoes had an extra layer of fluffy padding.
The two left the Dubian house and walked onto the village path.
Besides the closest neighbors, the next nearest household was about a three to four-minute walk away.
The early morning air was filled with tranquility.
In the water channel, the stream’s babbling created a delightful sound.
Surrounding them were fields, with remnants of straw at the roots.
Side by side, they sauntered through this serene rural landscape.
"In June or July, there is a big patch of hydrangeas here," Dubian Che pointed to a field ridge.
Kiyono Lin glanced at it and pondered,
"I’ve read in many literary books that the country ridges should be filled with crops like broad beans. Why plant useless hydrangeas?"
"They plant broad beans too, more soybeans actually, but that’s all in the past. These days, there are fewer people and many fields lie fallow."
"It has been many years," Kiyono Lin nodded. "Presumably from the Showa era."
They passed the field ridge that would bloom with hydrangeas in June, right next to it was a plastic greenhouse.
Inside the greenhouse, off-season vegetables were planted.
Three rows in total: one row of tomatoes, one of eggplants, and the remaining row filled with cilantro, green peppers, and garlic sprouts.
Dubian Che stepped off the path, crossed the water channel, stepped onto the muddy ground, and entered the greenhouse.
"Is this your family’s?" Kiyono Lin followed him in, looking around curiously.
"No."
Dubian Che picked two bright red tomatoes, casually wiped them, and handed one to Kiyono Lin.
"Isn’t that stealing?" Kiyono Lin looked at the attractive tomato in her hand.
"In our Misezawa Village," Dubian Che bit into a tomato, showing off its red flesh and yellow seeds, "this is a symbol of good neighborly relations, and we only took two."
"Just like having a driver’s license in Misezawa Village?"
"By analogy, smart!" Dubian Che praised.
Kiyono Lin sighed, "I really wish a cop would properly teach you a lesson one day."
"You think cops don’t steal? That guy comes to our village, parks his broken bicycle on the roadside, and goes into the fields to pick cucumbers. Don’t think taking just one each time isn’t stealing."
