Chapter 434: 205. New Year in Iwate Prefecture: Arrived Home (2)_2

"So you’re saying I’m not pretty?"

"No, what I mean is, you don’t deceive people!"

"Isn’t that just saying Miss here isn’t pretty?"

"..."

Women’s psychology is really baffling.

"Ding ding dong, ding ding dong, the bells are ringing!"

Dubian Che’s phone rang, not knowing who the benefactor calling was.

"Uh, let me take this call." Dubian Che took out his phone and pressed the answer key.

"Hello? Oh, mom? Yes, nine o’clock, lunch? Don’t wait, you guys go ahead and eat. Alright, I’ll be careful, bye."

Dubian Che put away his phone.

"Two misses, my mom’s urging, let’s save our progress for now and continue quarreling when we get to my place, how about that?"

"Let’s go then." Kiyono Lin handed the blue suitcase to Dubian Che.

Dubian Che subconsciously took it.

Hmm?

Wait!

"Kiyono! You tricked.... Meiji, ouch, ouch! Really, pick someone else to tease! My ears are practically asymmetrical now!"

At Shibuya Station during the homecoming season, a chaotic scene unfolded, along with couples arguing.

From Shibuya Station to Tokyo Station, they boarded the Shinkansen "Hayabusa."

The three were in a green carriage, where the seats were more spacious, more comfortable, fewer people, and naturally more expensive than normal carriages.

Facing each other, the two pretty young women sat by the window, Dubian Che sat next to Jiutiao Meijie.

"Are you bringing anything back?" Idle, Jiutiao Meijie asked Dubian Che.

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"Yeah, apart from clothes, I only brought a book by Nagai Kaoru, ’Sunny Day Wooden Sandals’, to pass the time."

Hearing "Sunny Day Wooden Sandals," Kiyono Lin, who was about to put on headphones and read, looked up at Dubian Che.

The last book she read was also Nagai Kaoru’s "Sunny Day Wooden Sandals."

Kiyono Lin showed a pleased expression, a smile appearing on her lips, she put on her headphones, hummed softly, and flipped open "Mudong Qitan" in her hands.

That was also a book by Nagai Kaoru.

Jiutiao Meijie gave her a look, not understanding why she suddenly started singing and was in such a good mood.

"Meiji, you woke up early today, want to take a nap?"

As soon as Dubian Che spoke, Jiutiao Meijie suddenly felt sleepy.

She had been working late these past few days and had woken up early today, constantly lacking sleep.

She leaned her head against Dubian Che’s shoulder, yawning, and prepared for a nap.

"Hold on a second." Dubian Che stood up.

"What are you doing?" Jiutiao Meijie complained.

Dubian Che took a blanket from the travel bag on the rack.

He covered Jiutiao Meijie with the blanket and pressed her head against his shoulder.

"There, sleep now. I’ll wake you when we get there."

"Troublesome," Jiutiao Meijie muttered.

Then, she wrapped herself tightly in the blanket, adjusted her head to a comfortable position, and fell deeply asleep.

The train bell sounded, the train slowly accelerated, leaving Tokyo, heading toward Iwate Prefecture.

About two hours later, they arrived at Fushi City.

They then needed to transfer, Dubian Che bought tickets at the ticket counter.

They boarded an old single-compartment electric train, the three of them sitting in one row, Dubian Che watching the luggage to keep it from moving around.

The train waited for about ten minutes, not waiting for a second wave of passengers, it started.

Heading north along the tracks, once out of Fushi City, the scene opened up.

"When I left, it was still spring, this place was all green wheat."

Hearing Dubian Che’s voice, Kiyono Lin, who was reading, came back to reality and looked out the window.

Countryside, wasteland, came into view.

Plastic greenhouses on the snowfield, reflecting the winter sun, looked warm.

"Are we there yet?" she asked.

"Not yet," Dubian Che replied.

Kiyono Lin closed her book, not reading anymore, and together with Dubian Che, watched the slowly retreating scenery outside the window.

After a while, the train entered a cedar forest.

The cedars were tall and straight, almost like skinny towers reaching up from the ground.

The light was blocked out, making the train interior darker, and it even felt colder.

Jiutiao Meijie, leaning on Dubian Che’s shoulder asleep, seeking warmth, tightly hugged his arm.

Dubian Che pulled the blanket up to cover her more and to keep the wind from entering through her neck.

Finally leaving the cedar forest, the scenery once again opened up.

In the distance, wisps of white smoke, likely from people’s homes.

As soon as Kiyono Lin caught a glimpse of the corner of the sea and was about to take a clearer look, the train entered a forest.

This forest was untended, with branches growing over the railway tracks. As the train passed, the branches scraped against the window like windshield wipers.

Some of the less flexible branches, it was clear to see, had been broken by the train.

"We’re almost there."

Just as Dubian Che had finished speaking, the train emerged from the forest, and the brightness increased.

It was a basin.

In the distance were mountains, and atop their ridges stood wind turbines, the massive white windmills turning languidly.

Moving the gaze from the mountaintops, below lay a forest, and beneath that, terraced fields stacked one on top of the other.

"If it were spring, the terraces would be filled with young green crops," Dubian Che said.

"It must be beautiful," Kiyono Lin imagined the scene.

Among the terraced fields were a few houses that looked uninhabited, and a water buffalo grazed.

Below the terraces, there was a flat expanse of dry rice fields, with a person wearing a conical hat burning straw.

"Is it Misezawa Village?" Kiyono Lin asked.

"Yes."

The train stopped at a simple station, as isolated as an islet and without even a shelter.

Dubian Che woke Jiutiao Meijie up.

"We’re finally here?" Jiutiao Meijie stretched and yawned.

"You must be tired," Dubian Che said with a smile.

"If I had known it would take this long, I would have taken a helicopter."

"That would have scared the villagers."

The three of them stepped off the train.

Compared to Tokyo, Misezawa Village in the basin was not cold at all.

Even with Kiyono Lin’s constitution, a thin sweater and a coat were all she needed.

"I like this place," Kiyono Lin took a deep breath.

Even the air was cleaner than in Tokyo.

"Just wait, don’t fuss about going back to Tokyo in a couple of days."

"Would I do that?" Kiyono Lin glanced at him with dissatisfaction.

Dubian Che pulled his suitcase and stepped down from the platform—a mere concrete slab.

The two young girls followed him, curiously looking around.

"There are no entertainment facilities here, no restaurants. The only places where you can spend money are the vending machines and a single snack store."

Following Dubian’s commentary, they saw the houses.

Just like Dubian Che had said at the Christmas party, every household had firewood piled up to the eaves.

Street dogs that would never exist in Tokyo could occasionally be seen.

They roamed in small groups, sometimes chasing each other playfully.

As the three walked by, the dogs seemed to hit the pause button, staring at them in unison, including the one that was being bullied on the ground.

"They won’t bite, will they?" Kiyono Lin hid behind Dubian Che.

"The ones that dared to bite have been killed, those that survived are all friends of humans."

"It’s a cruel rule, but it’s necessary," Kiyono Lin quickly accepted his explanation.

It seemed she didn’t like dogs.

Walking on a concrete path for ten minutes, a bus clattered past them.

On both sides of the road were drainage ditches.

The water was clear enough to see the bottom, occasionally a fallen leaf would drift by, and small fish swam against the current, only to be swept back to where they started after exhausting themselves.

Jiutiao Meijie pretended to look far off and asked, "Where is your house?"

"Over there," Dubian Che pointed into the distance, "we’re there."

Both followed the direction he pointed.

There was a small hill with two houses at its foot, separated by a fence in the middle.

"We’ll meet my parents soon, are you nervous?" Dubian Che asked with a smile.

"I’ve met the Prime Minister," Jiutiao Meijie said nonchalantly.

Kiyono Lin closed her eyes, took a deep breath slowly.

Jiutiao Meijie looked at her disdainfully yet baffled, "What are you nervous about?"

Kiyono Lin exhaled deeply, opened her eyes, and responded nonchalantly,

"This is the first time I’m visiting a male classmate’s house."

Seeing her nervousness, Dubian Che couldn’t help but smile.

Jiutiao Meijie turned her head to him, "What are you laughing at?"

"Oh, it’s just that I’m happy to be home."

"Mr. Dubian," Kiyono Lin extended her hand, "give me the suitcase."

"Tokyo women are really cunning," Dubian Che handed her the suitcase, then turned to Jiutiao Meijie, "Do you want yours?"

Jiutiao Meijie, with folded arms, did not answer.

Dubian Che shoved the handle of her suitcase into her hands, and she accepted it.

"Let’s go," Dubian Che took the lead, heading towards his home.
