Chapter 429: 203. Heading Toward the Christmas at the End of the Term (Conclusion)_3
Dubian Che withdrew his gaze and asked the remaining five people, "What are you planning to do next?"
"I’m taking the electric train to ’Wharf Park’; from there we can watch the Christmas fireworks over Daiba!" Ichiki Aoi had obviously done her homework.
"Sorry, I’m a bit tired; I’ll head back first," said Kiyono Lin, carrying a black bag.
Dubian Che wondered what color and style of lingerie was inside the bag, then said aloud, "I’m heading back too, I have to return to my hometown tomorrow."
The two bid farewell to the group of four.
Stepping out of the shopping center, they found that the snowfall had lessened considerably.
Dubian Che gave his coat to Kiyono Lin.
"...Thank you," said Kiyono Lin, her lovely face retreating into the collar of his coat.
"Are you very cold?"
"The ground has accumulated snow, which melts and absorbs heat, making it feel cooler than before it snowed. Shouldn’t you know this common knowledge, Mr. Dubian Che?"
"So it is," said Dubian Che, pretending not to notice her embarrassment.
They moved toward the station.
The platform was crowded, mostly with couples and families out for Christmas.
After finally squeezing onto the train without finding any seats, the two of them had to stand.
This wasn’t a big deal; living in Tokyo and not being used to packed electric trains? That would be laughable!
The two secured a spot by the doors, with Dubian Che using brute strength to protect Kiyono Lin.
As the train rattled and swayed, they carried on.
When the train stopped at the National Diet Building station, another large group got on, cramming the car to capacity.
To take up less space, Dubian Che also moved a little closer to Kiyono Lin.
There was still a gap between the fabrics of their clothing, but only dust and light could squeeze through.
When the train started moving again, the carriage jolted suddenly.
Dubian Che stood firm, unmoved, but Kiyono Lin, who had no handrails to hold onto, staggered and plunged her face into his chest.
"Are you alright?"
"I’m okay, sorry," Kiyono Lin said, lifting her face.
Dubian Che looked at her amusedly.
She gave him a white look.
"Rattle."
Kiyono Lin’s face plunged into his chest again.
".....Are you okay?"
"...Yeah."
Kiyono Lin tidied her slightly disheveled bangs with her hand.
Dubian Che looked out the window at the night.
"Clang."
"...How about you just lean on me?"
"..."
Kiyono Lin said nothing and didn’t lift her face.
They both looked out the window at the night and then turned their gazes away at the same time.
The glass window of the night was like a mirror, after all.
In that moment, Dubian Che clearly remembered feeling very strange.
He asked himself if he wanted to hold Kiyono Lin in his arms.
The answer: It didn’t matter if he didn’t.
There was no trace of sexual desire.
Why did it feel so scorching where her face touched his chest?
A human face, no matter how embarrassed, couldn’t possibly be like a red-hot iron, could it? Especially through layers of clothing.
So, was the sensation of heat his own fault?
The question lingered unanswered as the train arrived at Shibuya Station.
Dubian Che walked Kiyono Lin to the front of her apartment.
"Mr. Dubian, thank you," Kiyono Lin said, returning his coat to him.
Dubian Che put on the coat, straightening the collar with a smile, "I’m the lucky one."
"Hm?" Kiyono Lin tilted her head, looking at him in confusion.
"This coat now has your scent. I’ll wrap myself in it to sleep tonight."
With a headache, Kiyono Lin sighed and rubbed her forehead.
"Mr. Dubian, even if you’re going to be a pervert, your ambition is so small it’s depressing."
"This is the purest wish from a farm boy in Iwate Prefecture."
Kiyono Lin smiled, elegantly covering her mouth with her hand, "You’re about to lose face for both Iwate Prefecture and the farmers."
Dubian Che laughed too, and finally with a weary sigh, waved goodbye to her.
"I’m off."
He turned and walked towards his own rented room.
Hands in pockets and hunching his shoulders to prevent snow from falling into his neck, he proceeded.
"Mr. Dubian."
Dubian Che turned back to glance at Kiyono Lin through the snow.
"Merry Christmas."
Dubian Che was momentarily taken aback, then with a wave of his hand from his pocket said, "Merry Christmas."
Hands back in pockets, he continued walking.
But he hadn’t gone far.
"Mr. Dubian."
"Ms. Kiyono Lin," Dubian Che turned back, "If you’re going to miss me that much, come with me to spend the New Year in Iwate Prefecture."
Kiyono Lin took a deep breath.
"Okay."
"...What did you say?"
"Do you think they’d want to see me at a New Year’s event, where inside they hope you go broke but on the surface offer you empty congratulations?"
"I was asking what you just said," he insisted.
Kiyono Lin brushed her long hair off her shoulder: "Tomorrow morning, nine o’clock, meet at Shibuya Station."
This time, she was the one to turn and walk away first.
"...My ticket is for seven o’clock."
Never mind.
Dubian Che took another deep breath, relaxed his shoulders, let the snow fall as it may.
If he didn’t vent his emotions, he certainly wouldn’t sleep tonight.
So, he decided to run back.
This was their first Christmas story together.
