Chapter 424: 201. Heading Toward the Christmas at the End of the Term (10)_2
Gingko trees lined along the street, decorated with lights that created a dreamlike scene as if from a fairy tale world.
As Dubian Che and Jiutiao Meijie passed by, even Santa Claus gave them each a balloon.
Dubian Che held it in his hand.
"Meijie, how old were you when you stopped believing in Santa Claus?"
"Before I started school."
"I thought you never believed in it from the start."
"Even Kiyono Lin had her time with a pacifier."
"I understand the point, but why bring her up?"
"Do you feel sorry for her?"
"Please tell me, how old was she when she stopped wetting the bed?"
Jiutiao Meijie first glared at him, then switched to an uninterested expression, "That’s something you can ask her yourself, she won’t lie anyway."
"Not lying doesn’t mean she’ll answer that kind of question, right? Forget it, how did you find out Santa Claus wasn’t real?"
"I wished for a star but it never came true, though I’ve received several meteorites with craters."
"... Santa Claus really is pitiable."
Jiutiao Meijie lifted her elbow and gently nudged Dubian Che’s chest, "Then when did you stop believing in Santa Claus?"
"I never believed in that sort of thing from the beginning."
"I, the young miss, just said I believed, and you say you don’t? Are you trying to seem more mature on purpose?"
"I’ve never even wet the bed."
"You’re definitely lying to me, I knew it, not a single truth. When you confessed, saying ’I liked you from the first moment we met’, that must have been false too."
Jiutiao Meijie walked away from Dubian Che’s embrace and strode forward quickly.
"Wait, what I said was true!" Dubian Che, holding the balloon, chased after her.
"Meijie, Meijie, listen to me!"
"I’m not listening."
"I really didn’t lie to you! How could I lie to you!"
Jiutiao Meijie, in her red coat, hugged her elbows, her long legs moving, her face cold, and she continued walking without a word.
"Alright, alright, I wet the bed, I wet the bed."
Jiutiao Meijie stopped and asked him coldly, "Until what age?"
"Half a year?"
Jiutiao Meijie walked on.
"One year, one year!"
Satisfied, Jiutiao Meijie leaned her delicate body back into Dubian Che’s embrace.
"Relationships are not easy," Dubian Che said with a sigh.
"The nonsense about never wetting the bed, you dare say it to me?" Jiutiao Meijie poked his nose with her finger, "If you’re going to lie, at least make it believable."
"Yes, yes, yes."
"Yes? You really plan on lying to me?"
"No!"
I thought I would have to walk a long time, but in the blink of an eye, I saw the orange Tokyo Tower.
If I stood on it, looking down at Tokyo, adorned with lights, I would probably see the Milky Way.
There were many people in line to go up the tower, but just looking from below was enough.
Multicolored neon lights, ever-changing.
Tiny dots of light spread across the winter night street, bringing brightness and warmth.
Looking at these, all the gloom of the year would wash away under the glow, stirring hope for the coming year.
As I was lost in the view, a cold wind blew.
Dubian Che was unaffected, but Jiutiao Meijie involuntarily shivered.
Perhaps feeling her ears and cheeks getting cold, she put on the hood of her coat.
Under the brim of the hood, that refined and delicate face became even more adorable.
That look made Dubian Che accidentally become mesmerized.
Jiutiao Meijie noticed the change in his gaze and her mouth curved into an arrogant, scornful smile.
Dubian Che pulled her into his embrace, cradling her cheeks within the hood, and slowly leaned in for a kiss.
As their faces neared, Jiutiao Meijie’s fair complexion began to waver.
Underneath Tokyo Tower, her dark eyes reflected the sparkle of stars.
When Dubian Che heard the sound of her heartbeat speeding up, her long eyelashes fluttered gently, like butterfly wings, and she submissively closed her eyes.
Their lips met.
From the corner of Dubian Che’s eye, he saw the brilliant lights, the mingling crowd, the dazzling Tokyo Tower, the bashful roses.
The world was bright and colorful, with a beauty too plentiful to capture, all of it romantic and warm.
As they parted, Dubian Che realized that the hand that held Jiutiao Meijie had unknowingly wrapped around her.
Jiutiao Meijie also wrapped her arms around him, her blushing face nestled in his embrace.
There, in their midst, it was tender and romantic.
The winter night was no longer lonely; the cold wind was no longer desolate.
"Dubian."
Her voice, with its undulations, was as beautiful as the world’s most exquisite melody, as warm as the world’s most powerful Gulf of Mexico current.
Dubian Che embraced her tightly, breathing in the fragrance of her hair.
"I’m not going anywhere," he said with deep affection.
He had personally placed the ring on Jiutiao Meijie’s finger, and if she was here, he would stay here.
Tasks from the system, high-quality New Year’s gift packages, Transcendent Level skills—Dubian Che was unwilling to be bound by these things.
The colors of Tokyo Tower suddenly changed.
Jiutiao Meijie pushed Dubian Che away.
"What’s wrong?" he asked, puzzled.
"I’m going back," Jiutiao Meijie said as she tidied the hair at her temples.
"...Ah?" Dubian Che looked down at his watch, "It’s only 9:10. I wanted to spend more time with you. If you’re cold, we could find a restaurant."
"No."
"Then I’ll go back with you."
"Stop." Jiutiao Meijie’s finger touched Dubian Che’s forehead as he was about to embrace her, "I have work to deal with today."
"Work?" Dubian Che said, somewhat at a loss for words, "Can’t you take just one day off for Christmas? I’m going back to my hometown tomorrow."
"Exactly because it’s Christmas, I must work hard."
"What do you mean?" Dubian Che asked in confusion.
Jiutiao Meijie folded her arms, commanding, "You don’t need to know the reason, just listen to me."
"...Alright."
Dubian Che was completely baffled, unable to understand the queen’s train of thought.
Jiutiao Meijie got into the luxury car that had stopped at the roadside at some point, merging into the busy traffic.
Left behind, Dubian Che, chilled by the cold wind, began to hesitate whether to continue the system tasks or not.
After some thought, he decided to take a cab back anyway.
Unable to hail a taxi for a long time, he had no choice but walk to Shinkan Town to take the train.
Walking on the street, pedestrians gave him strange looks.
Dubian Che looked at the balloon in his hand, wondering whether to give it to a passing kid or just tie it to a tree and be done with it.
If he had a girlfriend by his side, it wouldn’t be strange at all to be holding a balloon, or even a woman’s purse, or wearing high heels for that matter.
After five minutes of walking and thinking about getting something to eat, Dubian Che saw a familiar figure.
Kiyono Lin in a white turtleneck sweater, wearing a long cardigan over it, with a brown long skirt below.
Lit by the festive lighting at night, her black hair swayed enchantingly.
"Mr. Dubian, why are you alone? Where’s Jiutiao?" Ichiki Aoi looked around.
"She suddenly said she had work and left," Dubian Che said with a headache.
"Working even on Christmas? Jiutiao is really hardworking," Ichiki Aoi nodded, her voice tinged with sympathy, "So what will you do, Mr. Dubian?"
"Go home."
"You live alone, right? It’s all the same going back. Do you want to hang out with us instead?" Ichiki Aoi suggested.
Dubian Che glanced at the few of them.
Yuzao Haomei wore an unhappy expression; Hanaoka Chaozi looked anxious; slim and elegant Mayi Asuka, carrying a small bag over her shoulder like an urban belle, seemed indifferent.
"I’ll pass," he shook his head.
"You’re going back to Iwate Prefecture tomorrow, right? Enjoy today a bit more," Kiyono Lin’s tone, more of a command than a suggestion, said.
"...Alright."
Dubian Che followed them back the way they came.
Waiting at the intersection, Ichiki Aoi suggested going to Tokyo Tower for ramen.
"Mr. Dubian."
"Hmm?" Dubian Che, who was passing the time watching the balloon, turned his gaze back to Kiyono Lin looking ahead.
"You said before, when you have no choice, you just eat what’s available."
"What? Oh, you’re talking about the roasted suckling pig and crab?"
"Being without the power of choice, sinking into hardship, facing desperate situations, I don’t think it’s a disaster."
"Then what is it?"
"I think it’s an opportunity for a person to grow."
"That’s a response very much in line with your character," Dubian Che nodded.
Kiyono Lin suddenly turned her face and looked at him intently.
"What’s wrong?" Dubian Che felt uncomfortable under her gaze.
"Having no power to choose, just drifting along, that kind of person might appear successful on the outside, but their soul is already rotten."
"I’m really sorry if my soul is rotten," he retorted, somewhat joking to deflect the topic.
Facing Dubian Che’s avoidance, Kiyono Lin laughed, "You told me before, the time you miss the most is when you were working every day, right?"
Suddenly, a soft exclamation swept through the crowd.
It had started snowing.
Amid Ichiki Aoi’s cheer, "It’s a white Christmas!" Kiyono Lin tucked her windblown hair behind her ear, her voice light yet resolute, reaching Dubian Che’s ears:
"No matter what you choose, Dubian, just be yourself."
Snowflakes fell between them.
After a silence, Dubian Che sighed and took off his jacket, draping it over the shivering Kiyono Lin’s shoulders.
"Whether I be myself or not doesn’t matter, just don’t catch a cold."
