Chapter 100: 79. The start of the training went smoothly.

"Each section return to your training rooms, I will come to check on you in rotation, I hope I won’t see anyone slacking or chatting," Kiyono Lin said with a stern look as she issued the dismissal command.

In the Island Country, where seniority is revered, to have the demeanor to command over sixty people, including sophomores and seniors, as a freshman seemed to be a feat only she could possibly achieve.

No, there was also Jiutiao Meijie.

But to have her as an adviser... would someone die? Certainly, it seemed that way!

With that thought, Dubian Che actually felt that Kiyono Lin wasn’t particularly strict.

Watching the members of the Wind Instrument Club quietly whispering ill of Kiyono Lin as they dispersed, Dubian Che lamented that they didn’t know their good fortune.

Dubian Che also returned to the Oboe & Bassoon section classroom.

He set aside the scores distributed by Kiyono Lin—such things were as distant to him as Iwate Prefecture was from Tokyo.

As a novice among novices, he didn’t even qualify for basic training like sustaining notes.

First and foremost was producing a sound, then came stabilizing that sound as basic training, and only afterward, the score.

"Gah, gah gah..."

Immersed in training, time flew by quickly; before he knew it, it was already six o’clock when Ayane Kumi called him.

According to the schedule set by Kiyono Lin, the next thirty minutes were for dinner.

"Mr. Dubian, what do you plan to eat?" Ayane Kumi asked gently.

Dubian Che, momentarily unsure, thought aloud with the reed in his mouth, "Let’s check the campus supermarket first to see if there’s still food, if not, just eat something casual at the restaurant near the station."

Traveling to the restaurant from the school only took five minutes, so round trip ten minutes, and twenty minutes for eating was perfectly sufficient.

Because of the short nights in summer, it was still light outside, the cawing of crows on the utility poles sounded particularly mournful under the dim sunset.

Dubian Che blended into the crowd leaving school, ate dinner at the restaurant, and returned to the music classroom ten minutes early, ready to continue practicing.

"Mr. Dubian, would you like to join me for some snacks to help digestion?"

Looking at the grinning Ichiki Aoi, Dubian Che puzzled, "Snacks for digestion?"

"It’s a girl thing," Ichiki Aoi replied playfully with a smile, "Come on, it’s all girls there.

"No, I refuse."

"Why?!"

"I’m the only member of the Oboe section; I must work hard."

That was, of course, a lie.

Was it not enough to spend training time with Ayane Kumi, now to actively spend his break in a room full of girls, was he seeking more favor from Jiutiao Meijie?

And he only had to work immensely hard to spare himself from Jiutiao Meijie’s scolding, as his playing resembled a duck quacking.

But Dubian Che didn’t dislike hard work; forced or not, if he had to learn, then he resolved to learn well.

Like Spanish and English, these were merely means to make him more exceptional and to train his learning skills, whether they would be useful in the future wasn’t his concern.

Ichiki Aoi, resigned, pouted, "Alright then."

Some time after eight in the evening, Kiyono Lin arrived at the Oboe & Bassoon section with a laptop in hand.

She nodded briefly as if to greet, "Please follow me in reading the music."

"Reading the music?" Dubian Che repeated the unfamiliar term in confusion.

Ayane Kumi explained softly, "It’s a fundamental training focused on reading scores to develop the ability to read music and produce correct intervals."

"Thank you, Ayane."

Ayane Kumi responded with a gentle, gracious smile.

’If only my girlfriend was like this,’ Dubian Che thought, watching her.

Ayane Kumi’s appearance couldn’t compare to Jiutiao Meijie’s striking beauty, only slightly prettier than an average person, but Dubian Che very much liked her gentle nature.

"Let’s start with the B-flat note," Kiyono Lin said, "Ayane, you go first."

"Okay," Ayane Kumi nodded and produced a sound at the same pitch as the note played by the computer.

In the night, her overly soft voice, naturally tinged with a touch of depth and melancholy, felt like Dubian Che was being cradled by his mother.

Kiyono Lin nodded and turned her gaze toward Dubian Che.

"Me too?"

"Don’t think that because we’re close, I’ll go easy on you."

"Wait, that’s not what I meant, I was saying..."

Kiyono Lin cut him off directly, "Don’t waste time, there are two more sections waiting for me."

"...Okay."

After Dubian Che also produced his note, she rested her chin in her hand and pondered, "Mr. Dubian, you’re not good at singing, are you?"

"...That’s the case at present."

"For now? Your tone-deafness is the kind that can’t be improved anytime soon," Kiyono Lin stated bluntly.

"Does it affect my playing the oboe?"

"No. Even if you are tone-deaf, you can still play the correct notes with an instrument."

"Then why the long talk?"

Kiyono Lin’s expression chilled, "Your skill is the weakest in the Wind Instrument Club, and while your academic performance isn’t bad, I’ll give you special training in reading music during the study session tonight."

"I’m sorry, my attitude was inappropriate," Dubian Che said, feeling like he had spoken too familiarly.

Kiyono Lin huffed as if sulking, "Apologies are useless. Now, you all play the B-flat."

Ten minutes later, Kiyono Lin hurried to the next section.

"Ayane really thinks Kiyono is very professional," Ayane Kumi whispered.

"And very strict," added Dubian Che, who had been scolded for ten minutes.

Recalling the recent scene, Ayane Kumi couldn’t help but smile, "But I think Kiyono’s attitude towards you is quite special."
