Chapter 250: 0248 Unexpected Opportunity
If there were no external influences, the story between Bennett and the stripper Annie would simply happen between the two of them. Perhaps this story might become one of the countless treasures buried by sand in the riverbed of history.
Many years later, perhaps people would have the opportunity to learn about this story filled with warmth and redemption through a diary or some oral accounts, making it known to the public.
Filmmakers would love this theme; they could use the phrase "Based on a true story" to draw countless teenagers and middle-aged men into the cinemas, leaving them in tears or laughter, and of course with their wallets emptied.
Many more years later, people might list all the classic films from the past century, and it could be amongst them, becoming a film that most filmmakers cannot ignore — "Annie’s Redemption."
If...
There are too many ifs. If there were really ifs, this world would have been perfect long ago.
The plan proceeds in an orderly manner. Jogriman does not show any anticipation or arrogance or any other attitude; he just became more low-key than before. He even told the people in the department that he has been sick recently, and that materials should be directly handed over to Mr. Bennett; he wouldn’t oppose any document signed by Mr. Bennett.
Jogriman’s "concession" in the workplace, coupled with Jogriman’s new cohabitation life with the girl Annie, suddenly sparked new enthusiasm and passion in this middle-aged man Bennett.
In terms of work, he holds great power, and people have even forgotten that their real boss is Jogriman; in their eyes, there’s only Bennett.
In life, he brought the girl into another realm. He would teach her the etiquette of high society, take her to buy those exquisite clothes, and take her on a boat to enjoy gourmet food carefully cooked by chefs on the river.
He feels as if his youth has returned; life has never been so beautiful, and he never knew he still possessed such vibrant energy.
It turns out that those things from his youth were not lost; they were merely hidden in the corner, ready to reappear at the right time.
It is in this seemingly harmonious days that Gap, who has disappeared for a while, turned himself in to the police, becoming the last straw to break the Ristone Group.
For Gap, during this time he considered many things. While working for those farmers in the countryside — he found an excuse to narrate his tragic experience, and kindly the farmer took him in, though he had to work.
During this time, he’s been pondering one question: whether to hide until everything settles down before quietly returning, or directly surrendering to the police.
After considering thoroughly, he decided to surrender, because as long as he is alive, the issue of Ristone Group’s altered accounts will remain a crucial problem for them. No matter if the group’s president is Neo or not, they wouldn’t allow someone who could easily lead a billion-dollar enterprise to decline to live; eliminating him has become fundamental for Ristone’s continued existence.
Under such circumstances, he had no choice; surrendering was the best option.
He might face a long sentence, but at least he would be safe.
The already precarious situation took an extremely significant turn due to the key man’s proactive surrender; even the mayor had a few more smiles on his face, becoming somewhat agreeable.
It’s as if suddenly many things became smooth; Congress held the first collective meeting in the first month of the new year, passing the impeachment proposal against the President with a large vote for the second time. The process has reached this stage, already indicating that the Federation is about to enter a new era.
According to the Federation Charter’s requirements, once Congress passes the impeachment against the President by large votes twice, the President and President’s Cabinet must complete the handover within two weeks, and orderly retreat from the President’s Mansion.
Next, the Vice President and the chief officers or chief executives of each department will take up cabinet member roles, forming a temporary President’s Cabinet.
In other words, less than two weeks remain until the President’s term ends.
The entire Bupen and even the entire Federation plunged into a sea of joy; early in the morning Lynch hadn’t awakened yet but was stirred by the loud singing outside.
Rubbing his eyes, Lynch sat up on the bed and glanced at the small clock on the bedside table; it was just after six o’clock. People had just gotten the newspapers and confirmed the news from them again, with many spontaneously taking to the streets to start a sudden carnival.
Hand in hand on the streets, they continuously sang "Long Live the Free Federation," as if the President’s stepping down would change the current predicament facing the Federation.
After exercising, Lynch sat at the dining table in the restaurant, eating his food while watching the TV.
The TV broadcast the live scenes from last night’s Congress meeting; after multiple rounds of voting and various messy struggling means, the final second full vote resolution passed.
The person on the podium, filled with excitement, read out the result; in front of everyone, he announced that the impeachment against the President has passed...
Immediately after the scene turned, an somewhat unfamiliar person appeared on TV. This person who hasn’t had much presence in many people’s eyes is the Federation Vice President from the Progressive Party camp.
However, he is quite lucky; soon, he will become the Federation’s second "cheap President," who lost the grand election but still gets to live in the President’s Mansion and form the President’s Cabinet.
Watching the passionate speech by the soon-to-be new President on TV, Lynch could already smell a peculiar air; a brand-new yet very savage, brutal era is about to arrive.
In the following few days everything seemed to develop quickly under some great will’s influence; people cursed the stupidity of the Conservative Party President while envisioning the future.
The first major change came after the new President finished forming his cabinet list, many countries sent congratulatory messages; they stated the appointment of the "destiny President" is the Lord’s choice, the Federation’s choice, and the people’s choice...
Overall, this sentiment genuinely invigorated the Federation Society amidst the continuously declining economic situation. Even the Bail Federal Industrial Index which was continuously dipping saw its first rise, letting those who feared the collapse of the financial market breathe a sigh of relief.
After the new President assumed office, many favorable news appeared as if the isolated Federation had suddenly reintegrated into a new world due to the President’s assumption.
Some countries gave the Federation some orders, and some countries opened free trade to the Federation; even for this matter, the President’s Cabinet established a new department and abolished the previous Foreign Trade Approval Office.
This new department is called the International Affairs Trade Department; within a certain range, its functions overlap somewhat with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while also controlling the Federation’s foreign trade approval powers.
Everything seems to be getting better.
Late in the month, the mayor arranged a time to meet and sit with Lynch; after meeting, the mayor looked at Lynch with a somewhat strange expression, like envy but also some sentimentality.
After a while, he sighed, "You’re lucky, next month the President will hold an internal party celebration event, and many important people from the party will be present, and you are among those invited."
This statement made Lynch, who had maintained a calm demeanor all along, momentarily stunned. He quickly returned to senses and didn’t hastily rejoice but instead asked a question, "Why?"
The President couldn’t possibly know someone like him; he’s also sure no one is kind enough to give him this opportunity; something must have happened that he’s unaware of, which is why he’s been invited.
The mayor slightly shook his head, "I talked to the Governor about the words you mentioned..." noticing Lynch hadn’t reacted yet, he simply reminded, "What you told me, that the Federation should take on more international social responsibilities!"
Upon hearing this Lynch nodded, taking on more international social responsibilities is the simplest and effective way to deepen the Federation’s distinct image in the international community.
Some countries might have poor strength, but people know them and don’t reject them; it’s because they’re active in the international community, which the Federation currently lacks.
Although people have accepted the Federation joining the international family and having more interaction, they don’t quite know much about the Federation; these situations must change to improve the current condition of the Federation.
"If you carefully watched the President’s speech, you’d notice he also proposed this viewpoint."
"The Governor submitted it as a suggestion on international affairs in a form of document to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the President thought this term was good, so he used it."
Sometimes, some people’s luck is really enviable, it’s something effort can’t achieve; the mayor didn’t expect Lynch could attend, while he, the administrator of a city, wasn’t qualified to go!
"But you don’t have to worry too much, this kind of invitation is just based on some practical needs..." For politicians, they can confuse many things, like black and white, fairness, morality, ethics, law, lineage...
There’s almost nothing they can’t confuse, but some things they can’t, nor dare to confuse, and that’s their political stance and political program.
The President’s statement came from the Governor’s document; part of the document from the Governor was quoted by the President originates from Lynch, hence inviting someone he doesn’t know to his celebration event is to tell others that he’s always following these rules.
He will not take someone else’s political program to become his own, nor will he take someone else’s political theories and achievements; he will respect everyone’s ideas and decisions, which befits his position, and only this way can show his taste.
As for whether he would have a brief exchange with Lynch?
Who knows!
