Chapter 421: Chapter 421 : Huang Taichen (2)
Huang Taichen’s face drained of color in a heartbeat.
"Do you have any proof, Sir?" He glared at Zhang Fengxi.
A self-contained smile played on Zhang Fengxi’s lips, suggesting quiet confidence.
"Strange, I was expecting an outright denial. Instead, you are asking me for a proof."
Huang Taichen’s realization dawned with a jolt. He muttered a curse beneath his breath, the words swallowed by the silk of his handkerchief as he brought it to his lips. Then, with a measured draw of breath, he rose to his feet.
"Thanks for the meal. I will make my introductions at Mount Wu directly," he announced.
After acknowledging Qiao Wei with a formal bow, he quickly excused himself.
"Where did you hear that from?" With a graceful gesture, Qiao Wei raised a skewer to his lips and savored a morsel of the sizzling treat.
"Here, when I was buying milk pastries for you."
Zhang Fengxi started eating as well.
A while later, the stall waiter came back with a plate of pickled radish to cleanse their palates and a serving of sesame pancakes.
"The pancakes are on the house," he said with a wink at the two guests. "Please continue enjoying your meal."
"Thank you," Zhang Fengxi beamed at the stall waiter.
Qiao Wei narrowed his eyes at the alpha. "How can the common folk know about the Spiritual Mountain Competition?"
"They don’t," Zhang Fengxi grinned. "The rumors circulated among fellow cultivators who participated in the Spiritual Mountain Competition. Don’t ask me which sect they hailed from, because I can’t give you an answer."
"I see..."
Qiao Wei’s fingers grazed his chin, his gaze fixed on a distant point as if lost in a labyrinth of reflection.
"It doesn’t make sense," he slowly said. "That young man doesn’t even possess innate talents, how can he smuggle demonic entities into Mount E’ling?"
"He doesn’t need spiritual roots to cultivate the dark path," Zhang Fengxi reminded him.
"Yes, but demonic cultivators don’t usually practice their dark skills in others’ presence. This matter is of the utmost sensitivity, particularly for cultivation sects, each fiercely clinging to their claims of righteousness."
"True."
Zhang Fengxi whipped out two empty talisman papers from the depth of his pocket.
"That being said, do you wish to spy on him?"
"Do you think that he is going to try anything tonight?" Qiao Wei asked in retaliation. "The Discussion Conference is over. What is the point?"
"I bet that he is going back to Tian’an Jade Palace tonight," Zhang Fengxi said with a confident glint in his eyes.
"Alright. Let’s get out of here first."
After paying their bill, they headed back to the inn.
Qiao Wei clicked the lock shut and opened the window slightly before settling on the edge of the bed beside Zhang Fengxi. The alpha bit into his finger to draw some blood and trace a complicated spell on two talisman papers. Afterward, his nimble fingers danced across two squares of shimmering talisman paper, coaxing them into elegant shapes – a crane, its wings poised for flight, and a butterfly, its delicate wings catching the lamplight in iridescent flashes.
"Crane or butterfly?" Zhang Fengxi held both shapes in front of Qiao Wei.
"Crane."
"Then I will take the butterfly one."
Mirroring each other’s movements, they folded their legs into the lotus pose, creating a mirrored tableau of stillness. Their breaths mingled in the quiet air as they closed their eyes, seeking the depths within.
The moment palms met, a jolt of raw power surged through their connected hands, sending sparks flying from their fingertips. The air crackled with discordant energy as their spiritual essences collided, then, as abruptly as it began, the surge ebbed away. Their consciousnesses drifted away, drawn into the folded talisman papers that stood silently on the table.
With a hesitant flutter, the paper crane unfurled its wings, casting a fragile shadow against the table surface. Then, with a sudden burst of grace, it soared upwards; its counterpart, the paper butterfly trailed in its wake.
Slipping like wisps of dreams through the window’s crack, the paper crane and butterfly took flight, their papery wings catching the cool night air. Above, the moon cast a silver sheen on the pulsing streets beneath them.
Some distance away, the Tian’an Jade Palace loomed above the town like a slumbering dragon, its obsidian scales shimmering under the pale moon, hundreds of glowing eyes watching from its spired towers.
High above the ground, the paper crane and butterfly glided effortlessly through the velvet night, their path converging with a lone figure marching resolutely towards the palace gates.
Huang Taichen’s face was especially grim. When he landed at the palace gate, he barked at the two outer disciples guarding the gate.
"Ask Shang Zichen to come out here, NOW!"
One of the outer disciples let out a mocking chuckle.
"Huang Taichen, how many times must we throw you away from this palace? Will you please go bother other sects? If you die, you won’t even be allowed to haunt this palace!"
"If I die, I will haunt your mother first!" came Huang Taichen’s mocking response.
The second outer disciple had to stop the first one from beating Huang Taichen up.
"Brother Huang, we are not allowed to let you enter the palace. Sect Leader Shang was very specific with his instructions. Apologies. Please go back for now."
"Are you dumb or what???" Huang Taichen snapped at the second outer disciple. "I did not ask to enter your stupid, smelly palace! I only need to speak with Shang Zichen, that’s all!"
"Second Young Master Shang does not answer to you," the first outer disciple pointed out. "And neither do we. Leave at once!"
A storm cloud of rage seemed to gather on Huang Taichen’s face, his features twisting and crackling with lightning bolts of anger.
"I want to see how you plan to get rid of me," he said. And then, the young man started screaming at the top of his lungs.
"BROTHER SHANG! BROTHER SHANG ZICHEN! YOUR TWO DISCIPLES HERE ARE BULLYING ME! COME OUT AND SAVE ME!"
