Chapter 413: Chapter 413 : Discussion Conference (2)

"Yahoo, Brother Qiao Wei! Who is that handsome Big Brother next to you???" The younger one grinned at Qiao Wei while waving a hand ecstatically.

Qiao Wei thus introduced all three people to each other.

"These two gentlemen hail from Dalian Meng Sect -- Dalian Meng Sect Leader Meng Xijun, and his younger brother, Meng Xiyan.

This is Zhang Fengxi, a wandering cultivator who is currently staying at Wushan Temple Sect as a guest disciple."

Zhang Fengxi did not bother getting to know anyone at the Spiritual Mountain Competition, but his prowess during the competition erupted like a silent storm, leaving whispers of wonder echoing through the hushed crowds.

"Aaaaah! It’s you!" Meng Xiyan cried out, his eyes as round as the moon. "I know you! You are that guy who beat the three-headed lion! Not alone, of course. Brother Qiao Wei, you were excellent as always," he quickly added, not wanting to undermine Qiao Wei’s contribution.

"I didn’t do much," Qiao Wei replied in all honesty.

He fell unconscious after being slammed against the wall by the beast, but thankfully regained his consciousness in a critical moment.

"There is no need to be so humble," Meng Xijun smiled at Qiao Wei. "The title ’Venerable Sword Saint of Wushan’ did not come without a set of prestigious achievements."

Qiao Wei cupped his hands at Meng Xijun.

"Sect Leader Meng is too kind. Qiao Wei does not deserve it."

Zhang Fengxi’s eyes narrowed to steel slits as he tracked every nuance of the interaction between Qiao Wei and Meng Xijun.

Why would a sect leader praise an outsider, no matter how brilliant Qiao Wei was?

And what’s with the warm gaze he shot Qiao Wei? That was highly improper!

The sound of Zhang Fengxi clearing his throat sliced through the air, demanding their immediate attention.

"Sect Leader Meng, did you also attend the competition? How come I didn’t see you around?" He asked with an icy smile.

Meng Xijun’s eyes iced over, pinning Zhang Fengxi with a glacial stare.

"I did, but I didn’t enter the competition ground. Xiyan did, with our nine other disciples."

"Oh, I don’t think that we ran across each other," Meng Xiyan said cheerfully. "I didn’t even know that there was a three-headed lion at E’ling Mountain! Oh, but I still came out fifth in the competition!"

Meng Xijun’s brows knit together in distaste at his brother’s flippant reply.

"It’s because you were relatively close to the entrance, Xiyan. I would rather have you farm the beast cores and other precious ingredients at Mount E’ling before coming out. The prize for the fourth to tenth place was ridiculously mediocre."

Meng Xiyan let out a soft giggle.

"I know, I know. I will perform better next time. Brother Zhang Fengxi, can you give me some pointers? I would be grateful to receive some lessons from you."

A polite smile curved Zhang Fengxi’s lips.

"Unfortunately, I wield a spear. I don’t think that I can give a saber wielder any pointers."

"Oh, don’t say that," Meng Xiyan laughed. "I am not asking you to teach me any spear techniques. Just share some in-depth tricks to allow me to excel in the next competition," he added with a snicker in his elder brother’s direction.

Meng Xijun shook his head at his younger brother’s childish behavior.

"Certainly, Xiyan can learn a lot from Sir Zhang here, but if he doesn’t feel comfortable, then you should not force him."

"Zhang Fengxi would be happy to share some of his extensive knowledge," Qiao Wei chimed in. "Before the banquet begins, why don’t we partake in a friendly spar for once, Sect Leader Meng?"

Meng Xijun beamed at Qiao Wei.

"Master Qiao Wei read my mind. I was about to suggest the same."

Qiao Wei bit back a flinch under Zhang Fengxi’s searing gaze, his steps trailing Meng Xijun toward the courtyard behind the pavilion.

Both of them cultivated the path of swordsmanship, thus a spar was more than reasonable.

And yet, despite Qiao Wei’s interest in probing Meng Xijun’s skills, he was more interested in prying out some information from the Dalian Meng Sect Leader.

"Sect Leader Meng, the three-headed lion at the Spiritual Mountain competition was quite a challenge," he remarked. "I wonder which sect leader brought the beast into Mount E’ling?"

With a flick of his sleeve, Meng Xijun danced into Qiao Wei’s parry, their blades singing a clashing duet as they spun through the air. Steel hissed and sparks pirouetted, before meeting again in a teeth-gritting lock.

"The beast is not supposed to be there, Master Qiao Wei. I am sure that Sect Leader Bai told you as much," Meng Xijun answered.

CLANG CLANG CLANG

Light as a whispered promise, Qiao Wei skimmed the breeze, his every step a ripple in the air itself. With a flick of his wrist, his blade sang a siren’s song, drawing Meng Xijun back on wings of reluctant steel.

"I am aware of that, but I also know that the one who put the barrier into place was you, Sect Leader Meng."

Qiao Wei’s voice was devoid of accusation, yet Meng Xijun’s eyes chilled at his words.

"What does Master Qiao Wei really want to ask me?" He snapped, his next attack was laced with fury.

Qiao Wei deflected Meng Xijun’s attack with an elegant flick of his wrist.

"Sect Leader Meng, I am not pointing fingers at anyone. The only person who can do that is you, Sect Leader Meng. Did you sense any abnormalities when you set up the barrier?"

Both men landed on the ground.

Meng Xijun stared deep into Qiao Wei’s eyes before he took a deep breath.

"Certainly," he murmured. "I sensed an abnormal intrusion into the barrier at the same time the participants entered the competition ground."

Qiao Wei guessed as much.

"Did you tell anyone yet, Sect Leader Meng?"

Meng Xijun shook his head.

"No. You are the first one who came to me with this matter."

Qiao Wei nodded.

"Very well. It is better not to tell anyone else, lest you alert the perpetrator."

"I agree," Meng Xijun said. "It is commendable of Master Qiao Wei to investigate this issue. Should you come across any difficulties, please do not hesitate to come with me."

"I will. Thank you, Sect Leader Meng."

Qiao Wei and Meng Xijun returned to the pavilion. They found the other two men in the cozy living room.

Zhang Fengxi was pinning Meng Xiyan by his wrists against the wall, their faces only inches apart from each other.
