Chapter 377: Chapter 377 : The Hungry Ghost Festival (2)
"Here is fine," Zhang Fengxi gestured toward an adjacent chamber.
"Eh?"
"Is it occupied?"
"No, no. Please, honorable guest, I will bring you some refreshments in a while."
"Thanks."
Zhang Fengxi pushed the door open and stepped into the empty chamber.
"Aoooo! Aoooo!"
Xiao Huang wriggled in Zhang Fengxi’s chest.
Chuckling, the supreme general took the cub out of his chest and placed him on the floor.
"There you go."
Xiao Huang jumped around ecstatically, ignoring his wounds. Zhang Fengxi quickly grabbed him out of concern.
"Xiao Huang, your wounds," he scolded the tiger cub, poking at the bandages around his hind legs.
"Don’t overdo it."
Zhang Fengxi walked toward the circular window that graced the wall opposite the door. With a firm push, the latticed leaves creaked open, unleashing a wave of frosty night air that washed over him, chasing away the warmth of the lantern-lit chamber.
The air, thick with the mingled fragrance of fried sweet dough and roasted chestnuts, drew Zhang Fengxi to the window. He leaned against the frame, his gaze tracing the joyous dance of lanterns below.
From his vantage point, he could see young children pulling at their parents’ sleeves, coaxing and begging the adults to buy them some evening snacks.
The sight inadvertently reminded the supreme general of his own wife.
Xie Jianyu ate a lot of those sweets when he was pregnant with the twins.
Even after he returned to Fuxi Palace, he often asked servants to go down to the Human Realm several times to shop for those treats.
Now that he thought about it, his boys had never tasted any snacks from the Human Realm. Maybe he should buy them some before he went back to the Heavenly Realm.
In the adjacent chamber, the window was slowly pushed open by a pair of jade-like slender hands. The person who opened it leaned further out of the window and turned to look at Zhang Fengxi.
"Sir Zhang," he spoke. "I thought I heard your voice."
Zhang Fengxi smiled at Qiao Wei.
"I also heard your voice."
Qiao Wei’s heart skipped a beat when he watched Zhang Fengxi’s smile.
He thought that Zhang Fengxi was handsome when he had a solemn look on his face. It was like admiring an ice statue, its beauty lay within its cold exterior.
But when Zhang Fengxi smiled, he became a thousand times more handsome!
The man exuded a light so bright that Qiao Wei had to shield his eyes to prevent himself from going blind.
"I... I feel that I have not thanked you enough for your help at Dong Village," Qiao Wei stammered.
Zhang Fengxi snickered at him.
"I told you it was to repay the favor from the previous time."
"I didn’t do much," Qiao Wei insisted. "You saved me, my shidis, and the entire Dong Village. Obviously, I am now in your debt."
Zhang Fengxi looked down at Xiao Huang and scratched his head for fun.
"Then, what do you have to offer?"
Qiao Wei swallowed hard.
"For starters... Would you like to have dinner together?"
"..."
"My... My treat, of course."
"Sure," Zhang Fengxi replied with an air of nonchalance. "Why don’t you come over here, then?"
A bright smile spread across Qiao Wei’s face.
"I am coming!"
The window was pulled shut. After a series of hurried footsteps in the corridor, hesitant knocks at the door announced Qiao Wei’s arrival.
"Excuse me," he said.
"Come in."
Zhang Fengxi took his seat at the table and cradled Xiao Huang on his lap.
Qiao Wei took the seat opposite him and put both his hands neatly on his lap.
The awkward atmosphere returned, as they still had nothing to talk about. Qiao Wei was thus very thankful when Zhang Fengxi found a topic to breach.
"You wander around a lot," the supreme general mused as he rubbed his chin. "I seem to find you everywhere."
Qiao Wei smiled.
"Our Wushan Temple Sect resides in Mount Wu. Dong Village is the birth village of our sect leader, and I was there to help out with their demon problem."
"Ah. And what brings you here today?"
"It’s the Hungry Ghost Festival. On this day, all cultivators are stationed all over the realm for an entire day and night. Sometimes, malevolent ghosts return to cause some problems, then we have to get rid of them."
"I see. I reckon that you are in charge of this town."
Qiao Wei nodded.
"That’s right."
Zhang Fengxi leaned with his elbow against the table, the only object that kept them apart.
"It must be tiring."
Qiao Wei gently shook his head.
"It’s nothing. I am happy to serve the common folk."
A while later, the restaurant attendant returned with a tray of tea and snacks. Xiao Huang was especially interested in the sweet dumplings, so Zhang Fengxi took one to feed it to him.
"Sir Zhang, if you don’t mind me asking... What are you doing here?"
This was the third time they met, in three different locations. Maybe Zhang Fengxi was the one who wandered around.
"I had some business nearby," the alpha answered in the most simple way possible.
He did not want to scare Qiao Wei by talking about beating demon kings back into their lairs.
"I see."
Qiao Wei gingerly reached for a sugar-glazed hawthorn berry and gave it a small bite.
Xiao Huang barely swallowed his sweet dumpling when a scream erupted from outside the window.
Both Qiao Wei and Zhang Fengxi rose to their feet and rushed toward the window to take a look at the commotion outside.
"Hahahahaha! Hahahahaha! I am back! I am finally back! I am going to kill all of you!!!"
A man was swinging a short knife at the crowd, his eyeballs were rolled backward, revealing only the white part.
"Excuse me, Sir Zhang. I will be back."
Once the words left his mouth, Qiao Wei stepped onto the window frame lightly and jumped down the window.
His excellent light foot skills allowed him to land gracefully on the ground, just like a god descending from heaven.
